I agree that it is way too early, but Leslie Caron did give the best performance in that category and deserved her win over the perceived frontrunner Kate Burton. This is one category in which the best submission won.

I second that, emmyfan.
As for tonight, I'm excited SVU is back, but I think this perfomance (Nixon's) could go either way. Its a risky choice thats for sure playing this type of character. I think theres a fine line between nailing and coming off as too showy or hammy. I think voters could easily ignore her come Emmy time next year. From the commercials alone I am in the hammy column, but I will reserve judgement until I see the episode.

yeah, i felt confident from that win on, and also from o'quinn, spader (though gandolfini was the best, i perfectly understand why they'd vote for his tape, and they did watch all of them), piven, ferrera, etc. leslie caron and kate burton were virtually tied IMO, since both had spectacular tapes, but i used the fact that burton is on GA as a tie breaker

That was Kate Burton's Emmy, but that's here nor there now, b/c tonight the focus is on Cynthia Nixon. It's definitely too early to call lock status to anyone, but a shortlist is forming already with some solid contenders, and if tonight pans out, then Nixon will be added to that list.
Congratulations, Primetime Emmy Winners!

Well we are 3/4 of the way done and Nixon is freaking AMAZING! Seriously, you guys were talking about this being really hammy, but this is truly great acting at its best!
My website and blog are taking a little break, since Geocities is closing and I now have to upload everything to a new site, so I am working on a new design and it is gonna take me a while, hoping to get it up by Oscar Season.
1. Caron earned that Emmy and was the most deserving winner. Her performance wasn't an easy one to forget.
2. I just was not feeling this episode or Nixon's performance. When it comes to SVU, I much prefer the more subtle, less baity guest performances. This just didn't ring true to me and was over the top. I kinda laughed, actually, at that courtroom scene when she tried to choke Casey. That said, Nixon will likely get a nomination, because SVU is a nomination machine for guest actresses(10 nominations, 2 wins).
I did like them making Munch sergeant and in charge, though that didn't last long. It was nice to finally see another trial. Seems like it has been ages since Novak was shown trying a case in a courtroom. I love Diane Neal and would love to see her get more material and an Emmy push, cause when given a chance, she shines.
Okay, Lindsay, are you forgetting that I was a professional twice over— an analyst and a therapist. The world’s first analrapist.

But that isn't Nixon's fault, that is the bad bad bad acting of Diane Neal. Nixon was amazing in this performance, I just wish they didn't go with the Primal Fear ending.

1. No one is disputing Caron's win. Burton was buzzed about to a "lock" for guest actress drama. Someone called Nixon a "lock," for next year, which is the same folly that handed Burton the award.
2. Nixon was on fire tonight. Hammy yes and baity as well but good acting trumps a baity script any day of the week.

Atypical was disputing it.
I guess we'll just agree to disagree on this performance. I don't consider hammy and baity to be 2 great acting qualities. It's just a shame her performances on House and ER were overlooked. Now those were 2 Emmy worthy performances.

I just don't understand people these days, someone girls an amazing performance that is by far NOT hammy and people don't like it. It funny. Baity, Yes. Hammy, No.

We can agree on Nixon's ER prefromance, but if a debilitating stroke is not bait I don't know what is.

Yes, I was disputing Caron's win, and will continue to. But back to the show topic, the episode was better than what I expected, and Cynthia Nixon was exceptional in this. She made all of the personalities fly, and just when I thought that the "twist" would derail what had come previously, it didn't and instead enriched it. I'd love to see Nixon nominated for guest actress, and I think she'll have a great shot at it next year. Riveting work overall, especially Nixon's performance. And Bronson Pinchot! LoL.
Grade for "Alternate": A-/B+

Oh let it go already, Atypical(says the guy whos still ****ed Teri Hatcher and Marcia Cross lost to Felicity Huffman 11 years ago lol).
I was only teasin you above, but honestly enough voters obviously thought Caron was more deserving as evident by the fact that theres an Emmy on her mantle right now and not Kate Burton's. But what do I know. lol
As far as the episode...good, and I'm glad the show is back, but I dont know if I'm sold on Nixon. Sure there were parts where she was great, but a few of the scenes were way too over the top and didn't come off as serious as they should've. I just wanted to laugh everytime Nixon changed her voice and made some of those facial expressions. I did think though that she was great in those few quiet, subtle moments where she wasn't flipping out. The ending twist was good though, I didn't see that coming.
She could get a nomination for this, but I just dont know whether I feel as though she was great and the cringeworthy moments were what she was going for with those over the top scenes or if she was just over the top. LOL I dunno if that makes any sense but oh well.
Mariska looks great with this sexy new do. I thought she was really hot with long hair but this aint bad.
