I just don't believe that considering what they did throughout the season, it made any sense to send Gordana or Christopher to fashion week.
The Austin vs Wendy comment is perfect for this situation. That was yet another moment when the garment of the challenge shouldn't have mattered considering how so-so Wendy had been (even less than Gordana). So why send Wendy to fashion week and screw Austin because of 1 dress at the final challenge? Even if it was the best dress at the right time, Austin had rocked it in his own weird way (unlike Christopher) all season long and had produced a sense of "what will he do" (again, unlike Christopher), he deserved to go to fashion week.
And in this situation they did what they should have done back then, Christopher could have had the best garment and still he didn't deserve to go to fashion week. Same with Gordana. Poor Althea screwed up just this once and for that she doesn't get to go?
Yes they can produce one good "winning" dress in the final challenge, but what about the other 5-7 weird, bad, horrible, so-so, not that great, barely there, pretty from the front not from the back dresses?
A final dress challenge should become an important part of the decision when the competition is tight, which was not the case here AT ALL. And Gordana's dress wasn't that good either, the reaction to this one wasn't even different or better than the reaction to most of her stuff, save for her winning dress and maybe 1 or 2 others.

Originally posted by Crystal: If they weren't going to send Giordana and Christopher through to the finals, why have the challenge and send home the winner of the challenge? It reeked of producer intervention--"We must have the Althea/Irene conflict so Giordana must be sent home." It was a wasted hour for me because there was no point.
Well it is a 13 episode show.
Episode 12 can't go missing because it became obvious who the final three were going to be.
You're right, it was a wasted hour. Had this been any other season when the final 4-5 were actually ALL worthy or semi-worthy of going it wouldn't have been a wasted hour because a debate between the judges and we at home would've been necessary and justified.
Sadly, this season, it just wasn't. The answer was right there, so it felt like a wasted hour.
Did Christopher belong at fashion week? No. Did Giordana? Maybe, maybe not. If you're going to set up a challenge, it seems absurd to send home the winner and the only one whose design related to the challenge. Would it have been unfair to send Althea home over Giordana? No, because Althea choked on the last challenge. Her dress was hideous. That's what this show is almost always about--the design that week. It was unfair to Giordana that she won the challenge, and she was sent packing. The whole thing smacked of "Let's change the rules so we can send Giordana home." Considering how boring this season has been, what difference would sending Giordana to Fashion Week make to the show? And why not just send all four like they did when they cheated for Jeffrey? And if they needed the 12th episode, do a clip show or a never before seen footage episode instead of creating a challenge where you have no intentions of keeping the winner.
Was I the only one taken aback when Heidi said that Christopher had been designing some beautiful gowns the last few weeks. Did the woman have amnesia????
There have been plenty of occassions on project runway where the worst design of the week didn't go home. The show has always sent the people they thought were worthy to the finals regardless of the final challenge. It just sometimes some people are so close to each other that it really can come down to that last challenge. I don't see them as having changed that this season. It isn't unfair that they sent Gordana home because her work this season hasn't been worthy...in fact would have been unfair to the three that went because they have been the most consistant (although kind of bland) this season.

When has the worst design for the final challenge not gone home?I can only remember Rami's season and the first season so it must be in the other three.
This is the first full season of "Project Runway" that I've watched. I have to say I'm into it.
It's been pretty obvious to me for the past four weeks that two of the final three would be Irina and Althea. Carol Hannah has always done nice work but she only made dresses. Maybe she did a skirt but I'm not sure, but never pants. (The preview for the finale did sneak it that Carol Hannah would have pants on the runway in Bryant Park). I thought that at some point she would have been busted for that. She always got a pass. But maybe that's because some of the other stuff was really, really bad.
Yes, Christopher this means you. I like your character and your ambition but in seeing the final cut for this show I would have to think that you would have to be embarrassed by your finish on this show. Epperson, Shirin, and even (yuck!)Nicholas-villianess bitch of the season- should have stayed on longer than you. And Logan's designs were consistently so underwhelming (he never won a challenge and finished ahead of Ra'mon who did and with odds against him too!)that his sex appeal to perhaps some of the contestants and judges was what got him to a 6th place finish.
But I liked Christopher. So it didn't bother me that much that he stayed on as long as he did, especially since he shined in the first few challenges of the season. I thought that he fell into a slump but I guess in the end Heidi was right, he just didn't have enough experience too pull off in fabric what he sees in his head.
Unlike the final challenge's apparent winner, though none was officially announced. Giordana had the best outfit of the evening, despite the slight flaw in the zipper. I'm not sad that she was sent home but I do think that her finish in the competition is appropriate. She was my season sentimental favorite.
Meana Irina opened herself up a bit in this last episode and it's nice to see that there is a soul there after all and that she isn't nasty, just honest. Irina you are the best designer of this contest and you should win. Soften up, be appreciative and grateful and people will respect you, even if they don't like you. If you thought Althea copied you or was inspired by you, shouldn't you be flattered instead of swiping at someone else's winning design?
Althea, you're a mystery to me. Your image doesn't match your designs. And I love it. Your last dress was not good but it was ambitious, especially in a season where being safe seems to keep you in the competition. Unless your collection is a killer presentation, I think Irina's over you by thismuch. But then, you are a mystery to me..
I've never watched an entire season of this show before so I don't know how the finale works. I am excited to see what the finalists create for their collections. I do wish that the judges were more consistent on this show, though. I don't think it's fair to the contestants to have to have such rotating judges.
Finally, thanks for celebrity judge Cindy Crawford. I've always loved you and have been waiting to see you pop up somewhere. Get yourself a show, Cindy!! I'd watch ya.

I didn't say the worst design for the final challenge...I'm saying there are weeks during the contest that the worst designer didn't go. So if you think Althea had the worst design and should have gone, well there is history of the worst not going home. I think this is the first season that ALL of the finalists were clear before we got to the final challenge...I think in the past some designers were so neck & neck that it actually came down to the final challenge. Here it didn't. And IMO I think the worst design did go home this week...Christopher

She was just the most acceptable of the final designs and got the least critiques....She did get from Nina (and others agreed) that it was nice from the front but not from the back.
The worst thing they said about Irina (who I don't like defending at all) was that the cut was too low and Cindy Crawford's complaint about the shoes. Big deal, cut it, take off the shoes. Nice dress.
Gordana didn't "win" here...She wasn't called "you are the winner of this challenge"...
Nobody changed any rules, the final challenge was meant to decide who was going home and who was going to fashion week, had it been a hugely successful final dress for Gordana, one last chance to show "who you are as a designer", maaaaybe a case could be made for her, but it wasn't that dress. It was just another so-so Gordana dress.
And let's not forget that Heidi has had it for Gordana for a while now, remember all those weeks when she didn't have the worst dress and was still in the bottom 3 or 2? Heidi hated her.
The show can't have its cake and eat it too. If the mantra "one day you're in, and the next, you're out" means anything, then Gordana should have gone to Bryant Park based on her final design (which should have been declared as the winner), and Althea should have gone home for her poorly fitted and conceived design. But instead they were looking at the big picture, which is fine, but it's not something they've been doing all season long and don't do for most other seasons either. Ra'Mon and Epperson could have probably made exciting and dynamic collections, but the judges didn't look at the big picture with them. Instead they eliminated them before their proper time, and we were left with average designers staying on longer than they should have been in their place (like Logan and Nicolas, and even boring Carol Hannah). Even though I would have liked seeing what Christopher could have come up with in the final show (since he did have some strong Christian Siriano-ish pieces in the early season), I knew that he wasn't quite on the level of Ra'Mon or Epperson. Gordana kind of got hosed this week. When Nina said, "I don't know Gordana as a designer yet", hmmm, maybe if you'd been around more this season judging, you would have known her, b/c Gordana has kept the same low-key tone just about all season long. Maybe in a weak season like this one, they can reasonably go for season's work over the final challenge, but the practice is still convenient and inconsistent.

I have to disagree though. I think they have ALWAYS looked at big picture when deciding the final contestants and that some seasons it comes down to the final challenge. This one didn't.
I do completely agree about Nina's comment though...it seemed strange for her to say that when she was missing for a good chunk of the season.

If it's always about the big picture, then there's no need for the final challenge. Let go of the weakest two based on the cumulative work done over the season and save the penultimate episode for bloopers or unseen clips. If they're going to have a final challenge, then it needs to mean something, and the winner should have a spot in Bryant Park if the idea of the show is that you're only as good as your current design. It comes off as convenient to set one standard when your season is strong, and another when it isn't, so my opinion remains the same.

I can agree with Atypical on this, with the line being "one day you're in the next day you're out". I understand how it all became too convenient. But this show doesn't have a quickfire challenge or one of the lesser challenges like Top Chef or Top Model, so the episode was necessary to vote one or two people off. If were those other two shows then yes, get it over with quickly and vote Christopher and Gordana off and have bloopers be the rest of the episode. Unseen moments, interviews, where the hell was Nina all season, etc.
But I'll keep my opinion because of Gordana's lackluster season, had this been any of the other seasons when maybe a front runner or two and two real contenders where the final four, then yes, let the final challenge decide. But here that wasn't the case, so no.
We're all repeating ourselves by the way, maybe we should let it go.
Well, I agree that Irina, Althea and Carol Hannah were the obvious choices to go to Fashion Week. (Though, I too really dislike Althea's "saggy tit" shirts. LOL)
It just made this last episode a complete waste of time. And it looked really bad when Gordana actually came up with the best look of the challenge. The criteria has changed week to week. I mean, this same show eliminated Ra'Mon and Epperson when they were clearly strong designers. Logan and Christopher were allowed to skate by for weeks. It all feels incredibly inconsistent.
Bah. The judging this season was crazy. And this last episode was boring and the epitome of anti-climactic.
You know, my roommate and I thought all season that Heidi had a strong dislike for Gordana. We thought it bordered on rude and inappropriate more than once. How interesting that in the few interviews I have seen from Gordana she implies that she felt the same way.
In this interview, Gordana says that in addition to her final challenge piece, she also made what she was wearing on the runway in that episode. Wow!
Yeah I've said it many times on this thread...Heidi didn't treat her very well, she might've been so-so in her designs, but many times she was in the bottom three she didn't deserve to be there. And it was always Heidi who gave her the biggest criticism when others didn't, and sometimes it didn't even seem she would end up in the bottom and yet she got there...
Heidi didn't change until she finally won a challenge, and then it was back again...
