With the departure of Katherine Heigl, this category has certainly been opened up a little bit in terms of who can make the Top 10. Sure, chances are the nominees will be pretty much the same, but it's always good for viewers to see some new faces (Or another old one, should S. Epatha Merkerson randomly find her way back on the list).
I've put together a little YouTube tour and analysis at my blog (Which you can view/read at this link: Emmy Preview: Supporting Actress in a Drama Series [Cultural Learnings] ) that features a lot of the contenders, but I figure that the ones who could benefit most are Sara Ramirez (Grey's) and Emily VanCamp (Brothers & Sisters) - both come from very crowded shows, but with a less crowded list I think the former could definitely make it in.
So with Heigl out, where do your predictions stand?

Finger's crossed for Jill Clayburgh. I've got a soft spot for her, and she was simply superb alongside Donald Sutherland in Dirty Sexy Money. Not to mention the fact she has an equally impressive tape; that partnered with her status and prior nods should get her into the Top 10?
Another longshot at best are the Big Love women. Zabrinske and Place are always at the top of their game. I can't speak for Zabrinske, but Place submitted a knockout tape.

I'd have to agree her chances are good, but my soft spot is for Natalie Zea, even though she has no chance of getting attention with Clayburgh around.
As always, I keep my fingers crossed for someone like Lisa Edelstein to make the top 10, but in reality, I think it will be one of the other Grey's ladies, like Sara Ramirez.

I guess Yunjin Kim has an outside chance, considering that her performance in the season finale should be fresh on the minds of the voters who saw it. On the other hand, if Elizabeth Mitchell couldn't make the top ten last year, can Kim do it this year? Hard to say.
My top ten predictions, in order of likelihood of getting nominated:
1. Chandra Wilson, Grey's Anatomy 2. Candice Bergen, Boston Legal 3. Rachel Griffiths, Brothers & Sisters 4. Sandra Oh, Grey's Anatomy 5. Rose Byrne, Damages 6. January Jones, Mad Men 7. Patricia Wettig, Brothers & Sisters 8. Connie Britton, Friday Night Lights 9. Jill Clayburgh, Dirty Sexy Money 10. S. Epatha Merkerson, Law & Order
It seems to me that Wilson, Bergen, Griffiths, and Oh are all most likely in. That leaves one slot up for grabs (or two if there are six nominees), and it's hard to tell who will get it.

If the Academy really falls in love with Mad Men, I could see January Jones getting nominated.

I agree - and it helps that "The Wheel" is going to be seen a lot as people want to see what all the fuss is about with Jon Hamm and that stunning monologue.
I do wish that she had submitted "Shoot," though, as it's a bit more of a contained arc. But she's also great in "The Wheel," no question.
Candice Bergen, Boston Legal Rose Byrne, Damages Rachel Griffiths, Brothers & Sisters January Jones, Mad Men Chandra Wilson, Grey’s Anatomy
For Your Emmy Consideration: Kyra Sedgwick - Best Actress in a Drama Series "Damages" - Best Drama Series Zeljko Ivanek - Best Supporting Actor in a Drama Series Glynn Turman - Guest Actor in a Drama Series

My money would be on Ramirez standing a much greater chance at making the top 10 and top 5 now. At the very least, it would justify Heigl's point about stepping aside for actresses with meatier material and perhaps even keep things balanced at Grey's Anatomy.
She's been nominated for her previous roles on television and emmy voters are familiar with her. Even though Private Practice doesn't have as much award show buzz as her other shows, i think she can crack the top ten with heigl out if abc sent out a screener or if voters saw the show.
But, i also hope yunjin kim has a bit of a chance to.

I think the biggest challenge for Brennenman is that no one has seen her show since December - the strike will keep all but the most award-worthy stuff from shows that never came back after the strike from getting in. It's the same reason that, for Pushing Daisies, Pace and Friel will struggle to break the Top 8 even if they make the Top 10, and why Chenoweth and Chi McBride will struggle to make the Top 10 period, leaving only the pilot's writing/directing and a long shot series nomination for the show.
Private Practice, a show with much less critical buzz, will have even more trouble drawing any more attention. Plus, Tyne Daly was the one who kept stealing other people's Emmys from Judging Amy (She owes one, at least, to Lena Olin).

I disagree on "Daisies". Many voters don't even watch tv, so they don't what has been on since the strike. Unlike "Private Practic", "Daisies" was nominated for three Golden Globe and has the critic's behind it. Even if "Private Practice" had a full season it still would have struggle to make any top tens.
For Your 2008 Emmy Consideration:
Pushing Daisies (Outstanding Comedy Series) Anna Friel (Ouststanding Lead Actress in a Comedy) Kristen Chenoweth (Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy) Chi McBride (Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy)
Friday Night Lights (Outstanding Drama Series) Kyle Chandler (Outstanding Leading Actor in a Drama) Connie Britton (Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama) Scott Porter (Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama)

Fair point, but there's been no commercials or media coverage or anything else for either show since the Globes. No question that they're not the SAME situation, but I think Daisies would be a stronger contender in acting if it had aired into May, and Private Practice might have had time to give some real Emmy bait to some of its lead and supporting players that could have been leveraged.

I vehemently disagree with this. The reason why any of the PD cast will most likely be snubbed is because of the competition. In Supporting Actor and Actress, all (and in Lead Actor, four) of last year's five nominees are returning again, and they will most probably secure those spots again so it will be difficult for them to enter. That's the stuggle they face.
Plus, I don't think it was much of a deal if the show last premiered in Decemeber. Once you made the top ten, the tapes matter now, and that's where they will base the noms so it's the tapes which is important.
FYC EMMY VOTERS!!!
Please consider the following performances:
Kristin Chenoweth (Pushing Daisies) Julia Louis Dreyfus (New Adventures of Old Christine) Steve Carell (The Office) Hugh Laurie (House) Kyra Sedgwick (The Closer) Neil Patrick Harris (How I Met Your Mother)

Wouldn't it have been more appropriate for Heigl to have allowed her entry to stand and then if nominated and win - make a statement about the poor quality of the scriots on the podium???
A great actor would make the most of a poor script!
And quite frankly - Heigl is nowhere near the excellence of a Bill Cosby or a Candice Bergen!
These 2 could make reading the telephone book appear good!
Heigl is just spitting the dummy - and it will guarantee her to be snubbed from future Emmy Awards - AND the Oscars - since most of the latter members also appear on TV nowadays....
Glenn Close, Sally Field, Susan Sarandon, Robin Williams.... ALL of them are excellent actors - Heigl has a long long long way to go before she can even lick their boots!!!
