Alright, instead of making individual threads for upfront news, I thought that I would just make one thread to put all the last-minute upfront news in.
From Deadline Hollywood:
Primetime Pilot Panic: UPDATED Info 3rd UPDATE: Fox Sitcom 'Back To You' Cancelled; 'The Inn' Picked Up
2nd UPDATE: I've just been told that The Inn (20th Century Fox TV / Reveille / Principato-Young Entertainment) was given the go-ahead by Fox to meet writers. I'm not sure if they can hire yet, "but it's looking good," a source explains. Directed by Jason Bateman, the pilot "is indeed good at FBC, and it screened best." Bruce Helford is gone from the Bernie Mac starrer Starting Under (WBTV / Mohawk), so the Fox comedy now needs a new showrunner. "The pilot stinks, but they want Bernie on air," a source explains. And the sitcom My Best Friend's Girl (Sony Pictures TV) is "heavy in the mix of CBS half-hours." Also, NBC isn't making any changes in its already announced schedule at Monday's upfront.
UPDATE: I am told that Life On Mars (20th Century Fox TV) is getting completely recast and reshot except for Jason O'Mara. But ABC has ordered the drama pilot nonetheless. Amazing, and it's not even clear if David E Kelley will stay with it. I am also told that two ABC comedy pilots, The More Things Change (Regency) and the Untitled Cedric The Entertainer (ABC TV Studios), are dead at the network.
To date my April 24th "Hot List" of primetime pilots is holding up. But one alarming trend I'm seeing is that Big Media is demonstrating even more reluctance than usual to develop pilots their studios and networks don't own. This is yet one more reason so many primetime scripted series fail. Here are my updates:
ABC COMEDIES The fact is that most of ABC's new stuff will need to go midseason because not only have few pilots yet been shot, but most are still only in the casting stage. Survivors are Stu Bloomberg's Bad Mother's Handbook (ABC TV Studios) in which Megan Mullally has now been cast opposite Alicia Silverstone, and the animated The Goode Family (Media Rights Capital) which has already gone into production on its 13-on-air commitment for 2009. Still awaiting more movement are previously touted This Might Hurt (20th Century Fox TV), Roman's Empire (CBS Paramount/Katalyst) and Nuclear Family (ABC TV Studios).
ABC DRAMAS Captain Cook's Extraordinary Atlas (WBTV) has been given a huge budget. "It's this year's Pushing Daisies. It's very high concept and the network is very very high on it." Castle (ABC TV Studios/Beacon TV) and The Unusuals are still hanging in there. Prince Of Motor City (ABC TV Studios) has pulled ahead in terms of "really good buzz". What's new is that Life On Mars (20th Century Fox TV) has been shot and is said to be "definitely on the schedule" even though there's still no final decision whether David E Kelley will be leaving or not. Also Good Behavior (ABC TV Studios/South Pacific Pictures) has locked in comedienne Catherine O'Hara to star.
CBS COMEDIES Nothing new with Single White Millionaire (WBTV) and Mike Birbiglia's Secret Public Journal (CBS Paramount/CBS), and both are still very viable.
CBS DRAMAS Mythological Ex (CBS/20th Century Fox TV) is said to be a favorite of CBS execs who "really want it to work". WBTV/Jerry Bruckheimer's 11th Hour already has a 13-episode commitment. And The Mentalist (WBTV) is "looking good". No news about NY-LON (ABC TV Studios/Beacon TV). But thing are heading south for Can Openers (Sony Pictures TV). A newcomer to the list is Exit 19 (CBS Paramount/ABC TV Studios) since locked-in Geena Davis just happens to be Nina Tassler's longtime best friend.
CW DRAMAS Both 90210 (CW/CBS Paramount) and How To Teach Filthy Rich Girls (WBTV/Alloy) have everyone saying they're locks.
FOX COMEDIES WBTV/Wonderland's Spaced adapted from that British series is said to now have a "phenomenal cast". Cleveland (20th Century Fox TV) already has an order and Boldly Going Nowhere (20th Century Fox TV) already has a commitment. The Inn (20th Century Fox TV/ Reveille/Principato-Young Entertainment) is still getting great feedback.
FOX DRAMAS WBTV/Bad Robot's Fringe from J.J. Abrams "tested really well". Joss Whedon's Dollhouse (20th Century Fox TV) looks like a lock. Paul Attanasio wroote a great pilot for Courtroom K (20th Century Fox/Heel & Toe Films), and the studio is now negotiating with Alfred Molina to star.
NBC COMEDIES Nothing more to say about NBC's two new comedies Kath & Kim or The Office spin-off since both are already on the schedule.
NBC DRAMAS Kings (Universal Media Studios) has already started production since it has a commitment along with My Own Worst Enemy (Universal Media Studios). The other drama, The Philanthropist (Universal Media Studios), is moving ahead and trying to find a new showrunner after writer-exec producer Tom Fontana left over creative differences.
Primetime Pilot Panic: Fox Yeas & Nays
UPDATE: As expected, FBC is picking up the J.J. Abrams pilot Fringe (WBTV/Bad Robot). He's the writer/exec producer. Network was really high on it all along.
UPDATE: After Fox cancelled, Back To You now being shopped to other networks.
FBC has picked up the animated comedy from Mitch Hurwitz Sit Down, Shut Up (Sony Pictures TV / Granada / Tantamount) to series. It's a 13-episode order. All star voice cast: Jason Bateman, Will Forte, Will Arnett...
As was expectedly, FBC also has picked up Cleveland, the spin-off of Family Guy, for 13 episodes.
I hear the pilot Bob & Doug (aka The Adventures of Bob and Doug McKenzie) is cooling back off, though not dead yet. FBC will take a look at the completed pilot when it's shot in July -- on hold til then.
The pilot The Pitts is dead.
Primetime Pilot Panic: 2 ABC Renewals?
I hear already-on-the-air one-hour Eli Stone and half-hour Miss Guided (exec produced by Ashton Kutcher), are "really in the mix" at ABC.

CW Buzz: 90210 and Reaper Look to be Keepers; Aliens, Not So Much
This just in from CW sources: The new 90210 is getting picked up!
OK, so that comes as a shock to no one, but another development left my jaw on the floor: According to sources, it's looking “likely” that Reaper will get a second season.
Say it with me now: halle-freaking-lujah! (Thank you, Beelzebub!)
Says one highly placed insider: “If you had asked me a week ago, I would have said no, but there have been a few changes, and now it’s looking like it’ll probably get the green light.”
Now, of course none of this is official and is subject to last-minute change before the CW announces its schedule this Tuesday in New York, but here’s what I’m hearing about where things stand in See-Dub Land:
90210 is a go. So is Reaper. Sadly, Aliens in America is definitely gone. (Don’t even get me started on how totally and completely sucktacular that is. That charming series never got a fair chance.) There will be one more pickup: either How to Teach Filthy Rich Girls (which is getting a title change) or Austin: Golden Hour. Which one it will be has not yet been decided. Everything will be announced next week in New York City, and I’ll be there, so keep checking back for the breaking news!

ABC Buzz: Women's Murder Club to End; Eli Stone to Return
The upfronts aren't next until week in New York City, which is where all the official pickups and cancellations are set to be announced, but sources close to ABC have tipped me that while bubble show Eli Stone will get the nod for a season two, another hour-long drama, Women's Murder Club, will not be returning.
Like I said, not official, but that's where these two shows currently stand, according to my sources.
Frankly, the news about Club might be for the best. While I adore Angie Harmon and the cast and loved the show in its original state, WMC just hasn't been the same since show runners Liz Craft and Sarah Fain were let go following the end of the strike. (At which point they were immediately picked up by old pal Joss Whedon to write on Dollhouse, so good for them!)
Sad news about WMC to be sure, but hallelujah about Eli Stone, right? I, for one, adore that series and need to know what happens next between Eli (Jonny Lee Miller) and Maggie Dekker (Julie Gonzalo). Post your cheers and laments, respectively, in the comments, tubers!

Well, this just sucks. My five-day flu fever finally breaks, I get back to the world of the living and I awake to find this?!
Sources inside ABC confirm that the wonderful world of Elmo so many of us have come to whole-heartedly adore is no more. Men in Trees will not be coming back next season. And I think I feel sick again.
I'm told the cast and crew were informed late Friday that the decision had been made. And despite the creative uptick this season and some of the finest and most heartwarming and sincere storylines around, the suits at the Alphabet Net have decided to pull the plug. Word is they haven't been impressed with recent ratings. But you gotta wonder, what would have been if they'd supported Tees all along?
"I wish the show had not been moved six times and put onto two long hiatuses," Jenny Bicks told my good frenemy Michael Ausiello. "No show could survive that." So, so true.
Obviously, this comes as a huge disappointment to us fans, especially those who spearheaded the philanthropic fanpaign to save the series, Plant It Forward. To date, they have purchased 7,000 food trees for needy families.
The only teeny-tiny sliver of good news? We'll get a real series-ender, thanks to Bicks' team plotting out an alternate season finale, in the off chance they were canceled. Maybe a double wedding for Marin and Jack and Patrick and Annie? Hey, a girl can dream...
Now tell ABC what you think of this Trees-chopping decision below, will ya?

Though its pretty much immposible to predict these things, I took my best shot.
ABC Sunday 7- America's Funniest Home Videos 8- Extreme Makeover: Home Edition 9- Desperate Housewives 10- Brothers and Sisters **- Same lineup still works, no changes needed.
Monday 8- Dancing with the Stars 9:30- Scrubs 10- The Bachelor **- Since this show will have to go through a network switch, Scrubs will likely need the biggest pick-me-up and should get the slot.
Tuesday 8- Samantha Who? 8:30- Miss Guided 9- Dancing with the Stars Results Show 10- Boston Legal **- ABC could use a comedy block and both of these shows broke out this year, although Miss Guided could use a boost from Samantha Who?
Wednesday 8- Pushing Daisies 9- Private Practice 10- Life on Mars **- This lineup worked but a rumor made me switch out Dirty Sexy Money (more on that later). Life on Mars is their biggest drama pilot, so its a no brainer that the quirky show fits in with this quirky lineup.
Thursday 8- Ugly Betty 9- Grey's Anatomy 10- Dirty Sexy Money **- Rumor has it that Dirty Sexy Money is switching over to the ill fated post-Grey's spot. Is ABC trying to kill the show or the curse?
Friday 8- Opportunity Knocks 9- Eli Stone 10- 20/20 **- This could be like opportunity night for ABC. This new reality show and Eli Stone are all about faith and chances, they could have a theme here.
CBS Sunday 8- The Amazing Race 9- Cold Case 10- Shark **- Same as ABC Sunday, this lineup worked, why change it?
Monday 8- The Big Bang Theory 8:30- How I Met Your Mother 9- Two and a Half Men 9:30- The New Adventures of Old Christine 10- CSI: Miami **- Per another rumor, the network has to pick between Old Christine and Rules of Engagement, and I stuck Old Christine here. But I didn't get rid of Rules of Engagement (read on).
Tuesday 8- NCIS 9- Eleventh Hour 10- The Unit **- I know that some say The Unit may not come back, but CBS doesn't have too many buzzworthy pilots. Eleventh Hour should fit well.
Wednesday 8- Rules of Engagement 8:30- Untitled Ed Yeager Project 9- Criminal Minds 10- CSI: New York **- CBS only has one comedy block, so a second one may not hurt. However, I have a feeling that CBS is gonna cancel Engagement or Old Christine and if they pick Engagement, it would take over Christine's spot and ABC (I think, or NBC, I forget) has said they will take it if CBS drops it, which throws a wrench in the whole schedule.
Thursday 8- Survivor 9- CSI 10- Without a Trace **- Next.
FOX Sunday 8- The Simpsons 8:30- King of the Hill 9- Family Guy 9:30- American Dad **- This shouldn't be touched unless they move Hill to 7:30.
Monday 8- Prison Break 9- Inseperable **- These two could fit well together. Inseperable or Fringe could swap.
Tuesday 8- Bones 9- House **- Another easy lineup.
Wednesday 8- 'Til Death 8:30- The Inn 9- Cleveland 9:30- Sit Down, Shut Up (or that's what I think it's called) **- Fox might have to make a new comedy block. They have a lot of worthy comedy pilots and not so many drama (besides Fringe and Dollhouse).
Thursday 8- Fringe 9- Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles **- These two could probably go well together. They do face tough competition though.
Friday 8- Are You Smarter... 9- Don't Forget the Lyrics **- Abandon them here.
The CW Sunday The CW has supposedly sold Sunday nights to some company that develops their own shows or something, but they've ditched it.
Monday 8- Gossip Girl 9- One Tree Hill **- The teen theme will work for Monday and Tuesday nights.
Tuesday 8- 90210 Spin-Off 9- Reaper **- No need for an anchor returning show, viewers will probably tune in to the new 90210.
Wednesday 8- Everybody Hates Chris 8:30- The Game 9- America's Next Top Model **- Chris and Game are the survivors of the comedy department's sudden shutdown and could get help from the network's highest rated show, Top Model.
Thursday 8- Smallville 9- Supernatural **- No need for anything else to go here.
Friday 8- 90210 Spin-Off repeats 9- Gossip Girl repeats **- Already decided to be a repeat night by the network, it should stick its teeny shows here for an update for those who don't watch on school nights.
Love upfronts! Should be a very interesting week!

Just hours after word leaked that the network had sacked Back to You, sources confirm to me exclusively that New Amsterdam has been euthanized as well.
On the bright side, 'Til Death will be back!

EXIT 19 DEAD: It didn't help that Nina Tassler is a longtime best pal of Exit 19 star Geena Davis because I'm told the CBS drama pilot (CBS Paramount TV / ABC TV Studios) is DOA.
INSEPERABLE LIKELY, SPACED GONE: I also just heard that FBC gave a "cast contingent" pilot pickup to the Shaun Cassidy drama Inseparable (ABC TV Studios). A source just told me he thinks the pilot will be re-shot. Despite all the buzz, and exec producer McG, and a "phenomenal cast", Spaced is a no-go, I'm told. FBC just turned thumbs down on the WBTV/Wonderland pilot, which was adapted from the successful British TV series.
STARTING UNDER UNDERGOES CHANGES,LIKELY GIRL: Bruce Helford is gone from the Bernie Mac starrer Starting Under (WBTV / Mohawk), so the Fox comedy now needs a new showrunner. "The pilot stinks, but they want Bernie on air," a source explains. And the sitcom My Best Friend's Girl (Sony Pictures TV) is "heavy in the mix of CBS half-hours." I hear that, after intense negotiations with David Kelley about cutting the show's licensing fee, ABC has renewed Boston Legal for a 5th season. A source tells me: "Watch for the cast to be scaled down to Spader, Shatner, Candace, and fewer people around them."
--------
Primetime Pilot Panic: CBS Pickups
As one of my sources complains, "They are secretive f*cks." But I'm told CBS is giving two drama pilots, The Mentalist (WBTV) and also 11th Hour (WBTV/Jerry Bruckheimer TV) pickups. And the network is saying "maybe yes" to Mythological X (CBS/20th Century Fox TV) for midseason or possibly even fall. As for CBS comedies, I'm told the Untitled Ed Yeager and Ric Swartzlander laffer from ABC TV Studios is picked up. The duo are the writers and exec producers.

DOLLHOUSE FOR MIDSEASON: I'm told FBC has picked up Joss Whedon's new Dollhouse (20th Century Fox TV) for mid-season. Given his rabid Whedonesques, who don't take rejection well, I don't see how the network could have said no this time around.
LIFE ON MARS MOST LIKELY: Sources are telling me that Kelley's other show for ABC, Life On Mars, "probably will be ordered" and is "looking like it should be officially picked up any minute." But insiders say it will have new showrunners: October Road alum Josh Applebaum and André Nemec.
RICH GIRLS PROBABLE: I hear How To Teach Filthy Rich Girls is "probably" picked up at CW, It was considered a slam dunk, like 90210. (Is it true HTTFRG's title has been changed to "Surviving The Filthy Rich"?)
THE UNIT, TOO: I just heard that well-liked veteran show The Unit "probably picked up at CBS".
NBC: Most of the major announcements were made at Ben Silverman’s early bird quasi-upfront last month, but today we’ll also learn that:
-- Jimmy Fallon is taking over for Conan O’Brien. -- Ryan Seacrest is launching a new reality dating series called Momma’s Boys, in which overprotective mothers find a bride-to-be for their son.
ABC (announcements to be made Tuesday):
-- Boston Legal will return, but with a significantly scaled down cast. (Reminiscent of The Practice’s cleaning and firing of six castmembers in 2003, which led to spinoff Boston Legal.) -- Women’s Murder Club is gone, as we reported last week. -- Eli Stone will get picked up and may possibly move into Boston Legal’s spot on Tuesday. -- Miss/Guided is likely to be picked up.
CW (announcements to be made Tuesday):
-- Jury’s still out on Reaper. It may return midseason. I may go insane waiting for the official word. -- Aliens in America is gone. -- 90210 has been picked up, with special guest appearances by Jennie Garth and likely Tori Spelling. -- How to Teach Filthy Rich Girls has become Surviving the Filthy Rich and has been picked up. -- Stylista, a new reality series from Tyra Banks and Ken Mok, has been picked up. Contestants compete for an editorial job at Elle magazine. -- Returning series: Gossip Girl, Smallville, Supernatural, One Tree Hill, Everybody Hates Chris, The Game, America’s Next Top Model. -- P-cat Dolls and Beauty and the Geek have been canceled.
CBS (announcements to be made Wednesday):
-- No official word yet on How I Met Your Mother, but sources connected to the series say they are expecting a fourth-season pickup, thanks in part to the recent ratings uptick and media attention over Britney’s guest spot. -- The Unit is very likely to receive a pickup. -- Moonlight is likely to receive a pickup. -- The Mentalist (Simon Baker), Eleventh Hour (Jerry Bruckheimer) and Game Show in My Head (reality competition from Ashton Kutcher) all picked up. -- Geena Davis’ drama pilot Exit 19 has not been picked up.
FOX (announcements to be made Thursday):
-- J.J. Abrams’ pilot Fringe, which reportedly cost $10 million to produce, has been picked up to series. In the vein of The X-Files, the series will feature weekly freaky-deaky investigations. -- Joss Whedon’s Dollhouse will premiere midseason, perhaps in a Monday time slot. -- Arrested Development reunion! This fall look for a new animated series, Sit Down, Shut Up, from AD creator Mitch Hurwitz. Based on a live-action Australian sitcom, the U.S. version is centered around the lives of seven high school teachers in the Northeast and will be voiced by the likes of Jason Bateman, Will Arnett and Henry Winkler. -- Peter Berg — you know, the guy behind Friday Night Lights — has been asked to direct the two-hour backdoor pilot for Ronald D. Moore’s new space-exploration drama, Virtuality. -- According to Deadline Hollywood Daily, the network is said to be enthusiastic about the Bernie Mac drama Starting Under, but it needs a new show runner. -- Back to You has been canceled, but rumor has it that CBS, which produces the show, is looking at it for a pickup. -- New Amsterdam will also not be returning, as we previously reported. -- ‘Til Death will be back

October Road is officially canceled. (Watch with Kristin) Moonlight may not be safe yet. (Watch with Kristin) Mythological Ex is picked up but not sure if its for fall or midseason, being renamed The X List. (Deadline Hollywood) The Mentalist ordered. (Deadline Hollywood) Untitled Ed Yeager Comedy ordered. (Deadline Hollywood) 11th Hour ordered. (Deadline Hollywood) Harper's Island ordered for mid-season. (Deadline Hollywood) Eli Stone renewed for 13 episodes. (Deadline Hollywood)
Zach Braff confirms the ABC move and explains last week's episode airing out of order
quote:
Scrubs moves to ABC
Dear friends,
Many of you have been understandably confused by the Fairy Tale episode of Scrubs serving as the series finale. It was not. I was not allowed to say it until today, but Scrubs will be moving to ABC for its final season. We are currently filming the 8th and final season. The true finale of the show will air on ABC in the fall. NBC merely promoted the Fairy Tale episode as the finale, as it was the last episode they owned.
Also, several of you were very confused by the fact that Dr. Kelso and Laverne were still working at the hospital in the Fairy Tale episode. Because of the writer's strike, the last remaining episodes for NBC were aired out of order. This is why Dr. Kelso was still chief of medicine. That was not Laverne however, for those of you who have been following closely; it was a new nurse "Shirley" who no one thinks looks anything like Laverne except for JD.
Hope this clears some things up.
peace and love, zb

CBS has made its pilot pickup calls, greenlighting two comedies and four dramas for its 2008-09 sked.
The half-hours are "Worst Week," based on a British format, from scribe Matt Tarses and Universal Media Studios; and "Project Gary," starring Jay Mohr as a recently divorced dad, from ABC Studios and scribes Ed Yeager and Ric Swartzlander.
Dramas are as expected: Jerry Bruckheimer's "Eleventh Hour" and "The Mentalist," from Warner Bros. TV; "The Ex List" (formerly "Mythological Ex") from 20th Century Fox TV; and murder mystery "Harper's Island," from CBS Paramount Network TV.

I am surprised to see "The Tower" not on that list of pickups... That was the Marcia Gay Harden starrer... I am mad that Exit 19 didn't get picked up, I like Geena Davis!
Well I guess CBS doesn't like past academy award winners on their network...
