3-01 'Occupation' (B+) Story showing no signs of slackening and the craft is as good as ever (the production values are like cinema, and on a fraction of the budget). 3-03 'Exodus, Part I' (B+) Solid, if not superlative. 3-04 'Exodus, Part II' (B+) Engrossing and spectacular, even if it is predictable. 3-05 ‘Collaborators’ (B+) Well crafted. Brings several threads together seamlessly. 3-06 ‘Torn’ (B) Eerie and atmospheric, though Kara and Tigh's storys are on the verge of repetition. 3-07 ‘A Master of Salvation’ (B+) Intelligent writing, tackling pertinent questions (regarding war) without being preachy. 3-08 ‘Hero’ (B+) Interesting backstory. Nice to get some history regarding the origins of the conflict.
Season Summary (so far): Commendable work, taking the story into a third season by adding layers (like a good novel rather than your average television serial). It's a more sober experience than earlier episodes of the show, (something to do with the spartan world of the cyclons?), but an admirable achievement nonetheless.
Heroes, Season 1
1-01 Genesis (B) While hardly transcendent, the writing and production values make it more engaging than expected. 1-02 Don't Look Back (B+) The ending made it all worth while, meaning I will be back for more.
Season Summary (so far): Interesting to see how many show’s on TV now resemble 'Lost'. Here it's the combination of supernatural elements, heroism and destiny, and while fairly conventional creatively, it's doing a better job than the series that started it all.
Jericho, Season 1
1-01 'Pilot' (B-) I like the concept and the signature shot of the mushroom cloud from the house is really evocative. On the other hand, the characters are clichés, the plot too predictable. 1-02 'Fallout' (B) This might be 'Lost' in a minor key, but it's an intriguing 'what if?' scenario, something the aforementioned show has forsaken. 1-03 'Four Horsemen' (B) Loved the abandoned plane on the highway moment. And the drama was almost convincing. 1-04 'Walls of Jericho' (B-) Too much focus on the community this time, and it's all rather insignificant stuff. 1-05 'Federal Response' (B) Tantalising big picture elements and show's exploration of how people change in a crisis is has great potential. Just a pity the drama is so formulaic. 1-06 '9:02' (C+) More focus on how the community bands together. The clichés are starting to bother me. 1-07 'Long Live The Mayor' (C+) Could be a children's show, given how poorly characterized the badies are. And the mystery surrounding the 'attack' is starting to lose it's allure. 1-08 'Rogue River' (B-) The principle actors, on the other hand, are doing a good job with such conventional material. 1-09 (B) I'm actually starting to care about these characters (without exactly loving them). 1-10 (B) Enjoying some of the micro elements, but the macro aspects (the big mystery) is starting to look like a con. Is there a story worth staying for, or are we dealing with another 'Lost'? 1-11 (B) Another episode dominated by soap opera elements - likeable enough - but far from epic.
Season Summary (so far): Promising concept and moments of genuine intrigue. On the other hand, it’s too reliant on the internal drama, which tends to be rather formulaic.
Lost, Season 3
3-01 'A Tale of Two Cities' (C+) Attention grabbing opening sequence, but extremely contrived overall. There is simply nothing I feel I can identify with here. 3-02 'The Glass Ballerina' (B) Red Sox reference (and Evangeline's lovely behind) made up for having to watch more of the others. 3-03 'Further Instructions' (C+) It's a credit to Terry O'Quinn that his Locke is still utterly convincing, despite serious flaws in the writing. 3-04 'Every Man For Himself' (C) The other actors are struggling with their parts though (starting to hear lines, especially from Lily), which is understandable given the absence of a meaningful plot to drive their characters. 3-05 'The Cost of Living' (C-) Hasty departure of one character and a ham fisted effort introducing two new ones.
Season Summary (so far): Even if there is a mind blowing plot twist coming (one that explains everything in a satisfying manner) I'm doubting the journey is worth taking now.[/color]
Prison Break, Season 2
2-01 'Manhunt' (B+) Satisfying follow on from series one. This writing is tight and a lesson to other more meandering, undisciplined serials. 2-02 'Otis' (B) Setting things up nicely. But the courthouse subplot was just too over the top, however well staged. 2-03 'Scan' (A-) Show has successfully evolved into a noir western of sorts, with just as much style and attention to detail as the first series. 2-04 'First Down' (B+) Another entertaining episode, even accounting for the silly Bellick subplot. 2-05 'Map 1213' (B+) Having all these ex-cons converging from different parts of the country gives real scope to the series, even if it is rather implausible. 2-06 'Subdivision' (A-) 'Prison Break' always possesses the capacity to surprise (both it's characters and the audience). Love this kind of storytelling. 2-07 'Buried' (B+) Great use of location (a real feature of these 'on the run' episodes) and new series regular William Fitchner is terrific. 2-08 'Dead Fall' (B) A number of plots and characters cross paths, and the way this happens is all a little too convenient (i.e. the writers took a number of short cuts). 2-09 'Unearthed' (B) Increasingly hard to accept the liberties the characters are taking too. Also tiring of these endless escape and recapture scenarios. Loving the look and feel however. 2-10 (B-) Something of a waste, turning a showdown between two 'brilliant minds' into a mere chase (and a contrived, unconvincing one at that); one of several missteps in sub par episode. 2-11 'Bolshoi Booze' (B+) Story as engaging as ever, with some nice character touches to lend it some weight. 2-12 (B) Entertaining ep., but I don't like bullet-dodging sequences. They're lazy. 2-13 (A-) Crackling mid-season finale. The plotting was first rate and full of surprises.
Season Summary (so far): I'm really getting into this show, even more so than the first series. Here, the writers have managed to take a serialized drama/thriller somewhere new, allowing the whole concept to evolve and providing genuine (if implausible) escapism in the process.
