This week's "True Blood": Was it the best "Blood" so far? Jul 12, 2009 | by Ken Tucker
Everything came together on "True Blood" this week, in an episode penned by series creator Alan Ball. Now I almost understand why HBO waited a week to air this after the Fourth of July holiday weekend.
Right off the bat, having Sookie and Bill play surrogate parents to the delightfully bratty Jessica on their trip to Dallas was clever indeed. It displayed a new side of the Sookie-Bill relationship, showing that they're not just lovers making goo-goo eyes at each other -- they can see each other's strengths and flaws. Sookie may be a tough country gal, but she's still naive about the nature of both evil and adolescence, and thus prone to being too permissive. (And, really, is there much difference between a teenager and a leeching vampire?) "Two travel coffins instead of one," sighed Bill, ordering an additional for Jessica even as he knew knowing nothing good can come of this. (OK, beware, hereafter, SPOILERS LURK.)
A pivotal connection was made in this episode, as we found out that the people behind the attack on Sookie upon arrival in Dallas (with the limo driver played by Dean Norris, who's so good in "Breaking Bad"), are the Soldiers of the Sun, the elite group of anti-vampire fanatics headed up by Rev. Steve Newlin and whose newest recruit is our dear sap Jason Stackhouse.
Other plot-points Ball was careful to hit during this hour: a recovering Lafayette denying comfort from a concerned Tara; Tara moving in with Sookie and leaving Maryann ("Go, flourish, don't ever say 'no' to yourself" -- lordy, I love Michelle Forbes!); and Maryann cranking up the orgy-dervish in Bon Temps to an explosive fervor.
There was some great dialogue scattered throughout. That debate among the Fellowship of the Sun stooges about who was the original vampire, Jesus, Lazarus, or Cain, was priceless, as was the Sookie-Bill exchange that parodied self-improvement cliches: "Hating yourself is a bad thing." "I am a vampire; I'm supposed to be tormented."
I also thoroughly enjoyed all the scenes involving Eric, not just because Alexander Skarsgard is such a fine, sly actor but also because, not having read the Charlaine Harris novels, I got a better understanding this evening of Eric's place in vamp hierarchy and more clues to the nature of this Godric guy.
Oh, and my compliments once again to whoever is picking the country music: the use of Sammy Kershaw's "Louisiana Hot Sauce" while the reverend's wife wiggled for Jason was perfect.
In short, I felt this highly satisfying episode may have been the best one of the season so far.

"Spoiler" Below: I read on another site that the preacher was featured on the cover of a vampire porn (the middle movie) when Sookie was looking at the PPV options. I need to check again, but I missed this. Did anyone else catch it? Should prove to be VERY interesting, if true.
Sunday's ratings of "True Blood" attracted a series-high 3.9 million viewers.

The episode was really a lot of fun and was easily the best of this short season. I like that Sookie & Co are in Dallas, and I like the Tara/Maryann stuff as well. I'm intersted to see what Eric has in store for Lafayette. I though the conversation about Jesus/Lazarus/etc. being vampires was a really funny part. I'm glad this show is growing its audience, it is really getting good.

This was such a fun episode, it was really good when it ended i thought that wasn't an hour, i want more, lol. I have fallen in love with jessica when she first showed up i thought she would ruin the the interactions between sookie and bill but she has made them so much funnier, i loved when she couldn't get out of the coffin. Also Maryann keeps me so interested and wondering what the hell she is and what can she do? i thought all the sories that are so different right now moved a lot and seem that they will connect very soon. all the characters are so interesting but sookie remains my favorite so far, but now we have another mind reader, i kind of hope he dies or get kill( sorry).

Kinda "Spoiler" Below: Yeah, I uploaded the episode to my computer and it does look like the preacher is in the middle movie from those adult videos on the screen at Sookie's hotel. Interesting! I wouldn't have caught that if you didn't mention it.

I watched the most recent episode a few days ago, this season is on fire. If the Emmys ignore this show again next year, they just prove how BORING they are.

Synopsis: In Dallas, Sookie connects with one of her own, then joins Bill and Eric for a strategic summit at the lair of the missing vampire, Godric, attended by his lieutenants, Stan and Isabel; Jason shows his mettle at a Light of Day boot camp and is rewarded for his hard work with a gift from Sarah; rebuffed by Tara in her relocation efforts, Maryann decides to cast her spell on the Merlotte's staff, softening Tara up toward her new "family"; Eric shares a little-known secret about his past with Bill; Sookie makes a decision that might solve the Godric mystery -- or get herself killed.

I can't tell if Anna Paquin's acting is good or just really bad. Because she has really bugged me this season. Anyway, this was probably the weakest episode of the season. The Eric flashback was interesting, and I'm enjoying the Light of Day storyline more than I was before. Other than that, this was more of a transitional episode. Meh.
This was a transition episode, and coming after one of the show's best episodes ever was going to be a letdown. But the backstory with Eric and Godric was interesting. I guessed that either they were past lovers or Godric was Eric's maker. I like Sookie and Bill's adventures in Dallas, though I wonder what's the deal with the bellboy that's a telepath like Sookie is. Maryann putting a spell on Merlotte's to keep herself in Tara's life was an episode highlight. The preacher's wife making a go for Jason was expected. Ryan Kwanten is having an incredible season so far. Loved how he helped Luke over the fence like that. I was expecting more on the writing end, especially from Nancy Oliver. Her scripts usually pop much more than this.
Grade for "Never Let Me Go": B

Same here. There are times when her acting totally makes me cringe. But then there are moments when I tell myself "Hey, she's actually pretty good". She's inconsistent.
One thing's for sure though -- Stephen Moyer is the absolute WORST actor on that show.
He hasn't given a single truthful or believable performance since day one. He's stiff, he overacts, and he forces his emotions. Nothing seems real or natural or genuine with this guy. His worst scenes are whenever Bill gets mad, that's when he cranks up the overacting.
So rest easy, Anna Paquin. No matter how cringe-worthy your acting gets, be comforted by the fact that there will always be someone worse.
It's so weird that in such a huge ensemble, the 2 weakest links are the two leads. Everyone else does an amazing job.
Synopsis: Accompanied by Isabel's human boyfriend Hugo, Sookie embarks on a dangerous mission to locate Godric; Bill is shocked when a vampire from his distant, more violent past resurfaces in Dallas; in Bon Temps, Daphne presses Sam to get more comfortable in his own skin(s); Hoyt continues his unlikely courtship of Jessica; Andy interrogates Lafayette about his disappearance; Tara and Eggs take a detour while on a road trip for supplies; at the Light of Day camp, Jason finds himself faced with some difficult emotional and physical choices.

WTF is with MaryAnn and her wild parties/orgies?? It's creeping me out!
The episode felt like a slow, little bit boring set-up to the last 15 minutes. Which in itself is a set-up for the last half of the season. Hopefully it's better than the first half.
