I just found out earlier this week that the rule changes this year have an unintended outcome for us. Nobody will choose or submit an episode unless he/she is actually nominated in mid-July. Of course, that takes a lot of fun out of the process for us but makes total sense that the Academy would not want hundreds of DVDs (like in the past 2-3 years from evey single eligible contender) if there are no blue ribbon panels in June.

I have still been working with around 15-20 people to choose a potential episode (or at least narrow it down to 2-3 possibilities), but it is just preliminary discussions. All of these people are considering some excellent episodes but probably don't want to jinx a possible nomination by formally commiting to an episode (even to us). Several of them still have episodes in May to close out the season anyway.

Hopefully, we will be able to get all of the submitted episodes in late July after the nominations are announced and the final choices are made.

For this reason, I am going to release this thread for a while. If we hear any changes in category placements (changing from lead or supporting), we'll make sure to keep you updated here.

Of course, we will do the category placements. We'll most likely find those on the screeners and magazine ads (and hopefully from the Academy again like last year when they amazingly made them available on their website).

Other than a handful in movie/miniseries, there are just so few that we don't already know from any of the expected contenders.

Help me to make a list of questionable category placements for drama and comedy contenders. We'll then try to go ahead and verify them with their studios, networks, PR reps, etc.

I'll start it off...

Angela Bassett for E.R. (lead or supporting?)

Jimmy Smits for Dexter (guest or supporting?)

If I'm remembering the rules on this right, Jimmy Smits has to go guest since he was billed as a "Special Guest Star" in the opening credits.

Jimmy Smits will definitely go supporting.

Angela Bassett... eh, no clue. Probably should be supporting, but I could see her submitting as Lead because she's a name.

No, someone billed as a guest star can actually go into a supporting category (like John Slattery last year). On the other hand, a person billed in the official opening credits must go into a lead or supporting category.

Okay, I was a little confused on that one (I don't know why though. lmao). Smits has a better chance of getting nominated and winning if he went guest since he was billed as one and the category is pretty low on big contenders this year.

I'd LOVE some confirmation on the placement of ER guest stars. Someone posted here that the official rule says they have to either be billed as Guest Stars OR their contract has to say Guest Star. Is this true? That would mean that even though they are credited as regulars, if they are contracted as guest stars they could still be nominated in Guest.

So, where does that leave Anthony Edwards and Noah Wyle? I am wondering if Wyle was just fulfilling some original contract terms, so that means he can't be considered Guest? Or was he actually contracted as a guest star? What about Edwards? Was he maybe contracted as a guest star, even though he was credited as a regular? Any chance ER would might submit Wyle in Supporting Actor?

This is probably all pointless, but I would love to know.

Well, January Jones plays pretty heavily in those Mad Men episodes. Hopefully that will help her chances at getting nominated.
