Comedy Series for the 2010 Emmy's appears to be very competitive, and we're only in October. With possibly 7 incumbent nominees (not sure when Flight of the Concords is coming back), and tons of new "good" shows, who will make the cut?
Here are the contenders:
30 Rock
The Office
Weeds
How I Met Your Mother
Entourage
Family Guy
Flight of the Concords (not sure when its coming back).
Curb Your Enthusiasm
Modern Family
Glee
The Big Bang Theory
Two & A Half Men
Community
Parks & Rec
Nurse Jackie
The Middle
Better Off Ted
Scrubs
Cougar Town
Hung
Californication
and dare I mention Desperate Housewives (which I doubt will ever get nominated again).

Much stronger competition than last year, IMO. I don't think Weeds will get in again, because this season was probably their worst. I'm hoping HIMYM comes in again as the perennial CBS nominee. The Office has been having a great season, and if they submit Niagara, have a very strong chance of winning. Of course 30 Rock and Curb will get in. As for the new shows, I'm guessing it's between Glee and Modern Family. Entourage might get snubbed, deservedly so.
So my final 6 are:
The Office
30 Rock
Modern Family
Curb Your Enthusiasm
Family Guy
How I Met Your Mother
With a possible 7th: Weeds, Entourage or Glee, although I don't think Glee will get as much love as everyone thinks.

Funny how you "dare mention" Desperate Housewives because we all know it won't get nommed. But I think the same can be said about Nurse Jackie, Parks and Recreation, The Middle, and Better Off Ted. As a matter of fact, the chances of the all the shows I mentioned if combined will still be smaller than DH's chances.

Heck, 30 Rock's even starting the season and we're discussing bout this already.

I hope The Office wins as Best Comedy Series for this year's Emmy Awards.

I don't think it's coming back? At least that's what I remember reading a while back.

It's way too early to determine the quality of the seasons ahead. However, often the Emmys have less to do with quality than with what shows have the buzz and what shows and actors are in line that year. Regardless of their quality, 30 Rock, Curb, and The Office are still getting nominations. How I Met Your Mother, Modern Family, and Family Guy are probably next in line.

HIMYM
Definitley in. This season is much stronger than the last, and they're in so it will be difficult for them to get out unless there is a huge amount of competition.

The Office
Is there any chance it could not be in? Strong season, and it's the office.

30 Rock
Sight unseen, it would have to be Tracy Morgan staring at himself in a mirror for a half hour for the show to not get nommed.

BBT
Certainly in, they have the ratings now to go with the critical support. They could actually be the next winner with the right tapes and if they continue to have great ratings and popularity.

Modern Family
ABC typically gets one of their new shows in here every year, or has one that is a very strong contender, this is it. It's also critically loved and has solid ratings.

CYE
Definitely coming back considering they've gotten more buzz for this season and the seinfeld reunion than they have in the past. They'll really make it in if "Flight" doesn't come back until the summer.

This is how I see the race right now, of course Family Guy could make it in, but I'm not sure I see them as a repeat nominee unless there are 7 slots.

Flight of the Conchords is coming back, but most likely not until the 2010–2011 season. I would even say that 2011–2012 is more probable than our current 2009–2010 year.

I predict:
The Big Bang Theory
Curb Your Enthusiasm
Glee
Modern Family
The Office
30 Rock

None of past nominees Entourage, Family Guy, How I Met Your Mother, Two and a Half Men or Weeds would be surprising. I think that good comedy is still quite lacking on television these days, but this year's lineup looks stronger. Even the shows that I do watch used to be much better or are uneven. It currently looks like it will be a closer race than last year or should be, anyway. 30 Rock is off to a somewhat rocky start with a score of just 75 on Metacritic—lower than shows such as House, The Good Wife and even Archer—while The Office, though probably better than last year's early episodes, seems like it is getting desperate with its stories. And Modern Family is racking up massive critical support. But shows in recent memory have won five consecutive years for best series and 30 Rock got four writing nominations last year, so I am predicting 30 Rock again for the win.

Will "Glee" really make it in? In spite of the great demo ratings and the critical support am I the only one who thinks it skews to young for voters? These are the same voters who rejected Gilmore Girls, Scrubs, and FNL for years.

I really have no idea if Glee will make it in, but it is worth noting that The Office is just about the youngest-skewing program on television these days. Last season, it finished around forty-fifth in total viewers, but first among scripted shows in the 18-34 demographic.

When I say young skewing I guess I mean the fact that it's a show that takes place at a high school and is about teenagers, and it feels very young.

If The Office has episodes like the first three for the rest of the season - it should be on shaky ground, but choosing six comedy shows and The Office not being one of them is very hard to pull off given the state of comedies.

I'd like to see Cougar Town make it in. The first four episodes have been laugh out loud funny. Two more episodes to go and you have six episodes right there. Bang and you're done.

Curb Your Enthusiasm will be back. Not only because of the Seinfeld 'reunion', but also because it's a very, very funny show! This season has been great so far.

If I never see How I Met Your Mother anywhere in the nominations - I'll die happy. Same goes for The Big Bang Theory. I'd rather have The New Adventures of Old Christine take either spot. It's far funnier than any other comedy on CBS.

Modern Family...I am torn about this one. A great comedy show, to me, is one that I want to revisit over and over and still laugh at the jokes I've seen ten times. I don't feel it with this one. It's a good show, but as good as many are saying? No. It reminds me of that show Carpoolers that was recently on ABC. Funny but I wouldn't want to return to it a couple of days later and therefore forgettable.

Glee is great. But I agree that it's too young for the Emmys.

Community just keeps getting worse. So a big NO on that one.

It's all popular vote now, so we might as well go ahead and do this.

"Curb Your Enthusiasm" (HBO), check
"Entourage" (HBO), check
"The Office" (NBC), check
"30 Rock" (NBC), check
------------------------------------------------
Of the new shows, I think that "Modern Family" (ABC) has the best shot at a comedy series nomination. "Community" is excellent, but it's in a tough time slot now and might not make it to the end of the season. "Glee" is too divisive to make it in I think. "Cougar Town" will probably settle in mainly on Courteney Cox Arquette. "Nurse Jackie" is in a similar boat with the star attraction being Edie Falco, but there might be room for other acting and tech nods there.

Of the past crop of nominees, there will be some representation from the CBS block of comedies, either "How I Met Your Mother", "The Big Bang Theory", or maybe a return of "Two and a Half Men." "Weeds" took another fall from last season if voters were watching it, so another nod for them might be iffy. "Flight of the Conchords" might have been a fluke, and they might not be back in time for eligibility. I have no idea about "Family Guy" making it in again. I hope that we won't have to reserve a slot for that show from now on.

The rest of the field is either sadly off of the radar now ("Desperate Housewives", "Ugly Betty") or won't drum up enough support for across-the-board series bids ("The Middle", "Parks & Recreation", "Accidentally on Purpose", "Scrubs 2.0", "The New Adventures of Old Christine", "United States of Tara", etc.).

The last two nominees I'll go with are:

"How I Met Your Mother" (CBS)
"Modern Family" (ABC)

If there's a seventh nominee again, I'll go with "Family Guy" (Fox).

Congratulations, Primetime Emmy Winners!

G'Day,
Well I agree that it wont be back in time for eligibility. Last I read (it was a while ago so it may have changed) was that HBO are really keen for a 3rd season but the boys arn't sure if they can write the songs for it.

However there nomination was no fluke. Firstly they made the top 10 list the year before. They were the only show other than Mad Men and 30 Rock (eventual series winners) to have nominations for writing, directing and acting. They were [emmy powerhouse] HBO's most sucesful show with nominations. They were equally the 3rd most nominated comedy series and equal 5th most nominated series. Clearly the academy really liked the show.

Congratulations West Wing, Emmys most honored drama. 27 Emmys including 4 best drama series

I didn't mean fluke in a bad way, but if something has to go to make room for the other contenders, I could see their series nomination being a one-time thing for more traditional fare.

Here's my predictions...

30 Rock

Glee
How I Met Your Mother
Modern Family
The Office

If those falter, I'd say the following could jump in...

Entourage
Weeds
Family Guy

What should make it (there aren't 7 worthy nomination slots this time around):

Big Bang Theory
How I Met Your Mother
Glee
Modern Family

On the bubble (for now): 30 Rock, The Office
Unknown quantity: Party Down (season 2 will commence next April; they'll be hurt by Jane Lynch's departure. Can Megan Mullally make us forget about Constance?)

Sorry, but CYE and Entourage are victims of a numbers game; too many quality shows ahead of them to qualify.

This season of Curb Your Enthusiasm seems to be worthy of a nomination from what I've been reading online (I don't watch it myself). Also, it's not only about quality, a lot of factors come into play. Entourage can very well score one more undeserved nomination.

this thread is way too unnecessary...half of those will NOT be even considered as possible nominees...

The list will come out of:

30 Rock
The Office
Weeds
How I met Your Mother
Entourage
Family Guy
The Big Bang Theory
Glee
Modern Family
Curb Your Enthusiasm

And that's being kind, if Modern Family or Glee come closer, Mother, Entourage and Weeds will be the first to go, yes, even before Family Guy.

Flight of the Conchords is a question mark from what I've read (I actually think it was canceled already) and everybody but 30 Rock and The Office will have to fight with Curb Your Enthusiasm and the Seinfeld storyline, which at this point seem to be the top 3 contenders for nominations. Only 3 more slots left.
