▒ Paddy Considine, "My Zinc Bed"
Yeah, you know my feelings about "My Zinc Bed" by now, LOL. But I'm surprised this is where you decided to show it some love: (1) because I thought Considine, generally a fantastic actor, was a complete mess in what I feel was an unplayable script, and (2) because the field around him was so deep (Bacon! Gleeson! Skarsgard! Sutherland!). Either way, Considine deserves some kind of award for enduring that material -- but maybe hazard pay and not an acting award.
Oh, but I won't pick another fight. I'll instead applaud your awesome taste -- awesome in that it reflects my own -- in picking "Generation Kill" for casting, ensemble, and supporting actor, even though I preferred Stark Sands to Ransone. Keep up the good work!

"A movie is not good because it arrives at conclusions you share, or bad because it does not. A movie is not about what it is about. It is about how it is about it: about the way it considers its subject matter, and about how its real subject may be quite different from the one it seems to provide." - Roger Ebert, from the introduction to "Awake in the Dark" (2006)

Paddy Considine was the best aspect of "My Zinc Bed," and I loved his performance the most out of the trio of nominees for that film. I've been a fan of his since "In America," and I've been waiting for him to get the kind of material that his talent deserves. The material here was fine, and I thought that he did wonders with it. It was a close race here between him and Brendan Gleeson. Gleeson was excellent and Oscar-worthy in "Into the Storm," and it's nice to see a character actor like him get a role like this that he completely nails. But another factor that came into play was that I had already awarded two past historical roles in this category, and I was looking to expand the field a bit for the winner (four of my nominees this year play contemporary roles, and one a more contemporary historical figure). Gleeson will make due with his Emmy though. But in the end, it was Paddy Considine that I just liked the best. Same goes for James Ransone over Stark Sands, though I said that I thought highly of both of their roles in "Generation Kill" in my comments.

And the ATYP for Lead Actress in a Miniseries/Made for Television Film goes to . . .
▒ Drew Barrymore, "Grey Gardens"
Past winners include:
Helen Mirren, "Prime Suspect 7: The Final Act"; Phylicia Rashad, "A Raisin in the Sun"
Comments: Sarah Chalke elevated "Maneater" a great deal, more than I expected from its source material (this is from the same writer of "The Starter Wife"). She carried the miniseries quite effortlessly with a witty and engaging comedic performance. Judy Davis was the main draw in "Diamonds" as a congresswoman searching for answers over her daughter's death in Africa (also watch for an excellent performance from Louise Rose as Luna Koroma in a separate yet connected storyline). Uma Thurman navigated a tricky character and accent well in "My Zinc Bed," and Sigourney Weaver's arc in "Prayers for Bobby" from being a bigoted mother of a gay son to becoming a gay rights activist was both heartbreaking and illuminating. But Drew Barrymore truly came into her own as "Little Edie" Bouvier Beale in "Grey Gardens," and I'm excited for her career possibilities after showing what she's capable of in this performance. The potential has always been there, and a few roles here and there hinted at that, but this one is the real standout. Her determination and hard work in capturing one of the most oddball and singular of personalities paid off beautifully. Bravo, Drew!

Boo, i ask for a recount, sigourney was robbed! lol j/k. I'm okay with either barrymore or sigourney winning. They both did great things with really challenging roles. And btw I had no idea that barrymore had facial paralysis and that's why she talked out of the side of her mouth. She really went all out for her role, trying to limit her talking out the side of her mouth and also by nailing little edie's accent down to every single syllable. I applaud her for really sinking her teeth into this fantastic role. I still think come emmy time lange will end up stealing votes from her giving the award to weaver in the end, but i'm glad barrymore won your award.
Two boos in a row! Score! Sigourney Weaver was great in "Prayers for Bobby," and I did nominate her after all. The film itself could have been better and less preachy, and that tempered my reaction to the performances in the film somewhat. But Drew Barrymore was better in a revelatory performance, and that was a clear choice for the win this year.

▒ "Negro y Azul" ("Breaking Bad")
Comments: This was a fun category to put together, and I could have gone with any of these choices for the win. But "Negro y Azul" actually served a purpose as a plot recap for everything that had happened up until the song aired for "Breaking Bad" fans, and the song ended up being surprisingly funny, witty, and supplied with English translations. I'd love to see this song Emmy-nominated. "Motherlover" was hilarious, and if I had this category going at the start of my awards, "Dick in a Box" would have been the winner for that year. "Just Give a Kidney" was a great parody of those celebrity telethon-type songs, and "30 Rock" is pretty much game for anything at this point. I don't watch "Family Guy," but I did like the irreverence of this particular song's lyrics, and Seth McFarlane's line deliveries for Stewie are at least amusingly juvenile. It's funny to hear the "Palin Rap" now after Sarah Palin seems to have imploded her political career, but this was a fun rap regardless, and Amy Poehler is a rock star for pulling this off in the ninth month of her pregnancy. I've included clips of all of the nominated songs (one is only an audio clip, but the rest are from the actual context that they aired in). Take a listen to them if you're not familiar with the nominated works.
