I know Gandolfini and Falco were not nominated at the Emmys in 2006, but it was reported that Gandolfini submitted "Johnny Cakes" and Falco submitted "Join the Club." If nominated, do you think they would have beat Kiefer Sutherland and Mariska Hargitay, the eventual winners for their respective Emmy awards. Both Gandolfini and Falco were superb in those episodes. It's hard to believe they were not nominated that year.
The initial 'Blue Ribbon Panel' set-up was ridiculous, with its confusing grading system and the possible scruppleless members that got to vote.
I think Keifer's win was more of a get-him-the-hell-out-of-the-way-so-we-don't-have-to-worry-about-giving-him-a-win-later. I think even if James would have come into play it likely still would have been Keifer's gold.
It's hard to say whether Falco would have won or not. Her tape was excellent, in fact the more I think about it, the more I'm convinced her turn in 'Join the Club' was the best work she ever did in the entire series. Hargitay's episode was baity, and the fact that Falco had already won several times before definately would have come into play. It would have been a tough one to call.
I think that Edie Falco could have won another Emmy with "Join the Club." It would have been harder for James Gandolfini to win with "Johnny Cakes," but it wouldn't have been impossible.
Congratulations, Primetime Emmy Winners!

It seems like everyone on here thought they were necessary.
Even with Gandolfini there, I think he won't win. I really think Laurie had a bigger chance had he been nominated too. I felt that they're trying to spread the wealth in that category since they've nominated all Emmy-less actors, and two of them in farewell shows.
Falco would have been very competitive for the win, and I guess she'll battle it out. She might have won her fourth one had she been nominated. Though I wonder which nominee will be left out if she was there.
I hope The Office wins as Best Comedy Series for this year's Emmy Awards.

I do wish the panel-system was into play, but do you recall the awful nominees from that first year? Clearly, something was awry with either the voting techniques or the voters themselves.
Congrats Kristen! All the PD haters can (SPOILER ALERT) Suck it!
G'Day, Lead Actress that year had Conroy, Janney, Hargitay and Sedgewik all with great tapes and Davis with a very baity one. I'm assuming it was ver close. Add Falco to the mix who knows how the votes would have been reallocated and any of them could have ended up winning. I was disappointed with Falco in Join the Club and wouldn't have gotten my vote in that field but it was a widely praised tape and she would have had a solid shot of winning.
Gandolfini I think would have been a tougher sell. I do think there was likley a close 3 horse race that year and Gandolfini could have taken advantage of that. But Sutherland didn't win on performance but rather a combination of 24 buzz, being overdue and having a really good episode submitted (it won directing and helped them win drama series). The gritty cable nature of Gandolfini's tape I see taking Leary's votes if anyones.
Congratulations West Wing, Emmys most honored drama. 27 Emmys including 4 best drama series "What's Next?"

Emmy voters rejected their tapes in the blue-ribbon panel (which I think is one of emmys best ideas in years.)
I also don't think Falco's "Join the Club" could have beat the other five nominated tapes. Davis, Janney, and especailly Conroy were giving winning performances that bordered on or were Oscar-worthy. Hargitay's tape(which as very good) was so baity the writers allowed her to speak to a phone so no one, not even a guest star, could limit her screentime or challenge her in a scene. And Sedgwick was fantastic and give a performance that was deep, shocking, fun, and a breath of fresh air. I feel like Falco was a very strong 6th that year.
I really like the Blue Ribbon panels. I think some of the nominees were odd, but when you watch their tapes it's obvious why they were nominated. Even Kevin James earned his nomination by giving a balsy and hilarious physical performance that isn't done that much anymore. I think you can say voters didn't vote with the best tape, but it was clear from the tapes that the right people got in if you look at the standards voters used. I much prefer that they use that than just name recognition.
Also, has anyone ever wondered if Lauren Graham was hurt by the tape system. Not just in the fact that she submitted a dramatic tape and didn't make it in, but that maybe she was in the top 5 that year and the tape system actually hurt her. She had so much buzz that year, and since the blue-ribbon panels were called the "Lauren Graham System", I feel like she was really on voters minds during voting and I wouldn't have been surprised if she was in the top five on the popular ballot that year.
That was an awful year for the Emmys, and it was b/c of those blue-ribbon panels. I'm glad the notion was amended the following year and afterwards.
Congratulations, Primetime Emmy Winners!

I actually forgot it already but then, there's a top 15 back then, and then they submit a tape, then it's gonna be judged by the tape. The top five highest based on tapes solely will be the nominees.
That's what I remember.
I hope The Office wins as Best Comedy Series for this year's Emmy Awards.
