Actually, I'm predicting that all the major categories will have 6 nominees this year. At least, the Supporting Actor/Actress categories and Drama Lead Actress.

Can someone explain WHY some categories have 6 or 7, while others only have 5? And why not just make them all 6? Especially now that there's more than a hundred supporting actors competing!

I think ties have something to do with having more than 5 nominees in a given category.

I think it should depend on how many people enter the race in each category. If supporting actor drama has the most submissions, it should have more nominees than the other categories, and comedy lead actor and lead actress have the least.
There could be no less than five and no more than ten nominees per category (depending on how many people entered the race in each category). So comedy lead actor and actress could have five nominees and drama supporting actor could have ten. Everything else would have a number in between.
It would be amazing if the Emmys worked like that.

I can only speak for the acting categories but this has been the result of having both the tape and popular vote. Some would be too high on popular vote but low on the tapes, while others might be low on popular vote but high on the tapes. This calls for ties and results to have more than the typical five nominees.
