Last night I was watching emmys 1998 ceremony and Camryn Manheim in her speech thanked Dennis Smith for his amazing direction and the only episode directed by Dennis Smith in the second season was AXE MURDERER. I guess that this episode was one of her submissions.

The more I think about it, Jason Bateman & Jeffrey Tambor could've given Arrested Development's 3rd season premiere a ratings bump with better tapes last summer.
Tambor pulled the brilliant "Meat the Veals" for the less-memorable "Burning Love." Bateman submitted the supporting cast showcase "Good Grief" over a wealth of better material like "Meat the Veals," "Righteous Brothers," or "The One Where Michael Leaves."
Maybe Shalhoub and Garrett would've won anyway, and yes, AD was as good as dead regardless. But Season 3 premiered the night after the Emmys. Had Bateman AND Tambor won, which better tapes might've enabled, maybe fate would've brought a ratings bump.
Or... probably not

We should start trying to fill in some of these blanks in these submission years, though how to exactly do that is an issue.

I'm really not surprised that Six Feet Under in 2002 lost to The West wing. TWW,as usual, picked its very best tapes. On the other hand,SFU made a sort of disaster.I mean,I loved every single episode of the SFU first two seasons, but they really had better stuff, and of those eight episodes, only one would have been on my list("A Private Life").
They should have sent: TAPE 1: "Pilot" + "The Plan" TAPE 2: "The New Person" + "A Private Life" TAPE 3: "In Place Of Anger" + "The Secret" TAPE 4: "The Liar And The Whore" + "I'll Take You"
They would have had not a sure win but a major chance this way.
Also,Lauren Ambrose, damn it! The "Plan" is a wonderful Emmy-whorhty performance.Better than both Channing episodes. BUT,"The Trip"??Why??She has nothing to do in that episode. If she would have gone with "Pilot",where she has a good number of knockout scenes, like discovering her father's death being on crack, and the one with Nate in the market,I think she really could have won.
Also Krause in my opinion should have submitted "Pilot".The final scenes at the funeral were great for him.

I really think Marie's Sculpture is an overrated episode. Doris for me won just thanks to the great Lucky Suit. But she should have paired it with Mother Day or the season finale of that year.
I also don't understand how with so many amazing episode that season(and lot of great Friends/Malcom/Sex/Scrubs eppys that year)Marie's Sculpture was nodded for best writing. It was simply unfunny.

Marie's Sculpture is one of my favorite episodes of Everybody Loves Raymond. I guess it's all a matter of taste, but it was good enough for Doris to submit it and good enough for an Emmy win. True it was the weaker submission of the two, but I don't think that the voters would have given her the win with one good episode "The Lucky Suit" and one unfunny episode.
Luck Suit was a phenominal episode for Roberts. It was her most brilliant tape along with the finale. I know I am in the minority, but Roberts deserved all 4 of her Emmy awards.

Count me in the minority! Doris Roberts never fails to make me howl in laughter. I also love those Sex and the City gals especially Samantha Jones but they can never match the range that Marie Barone displays in every episode of Everybody Loves Raymond.
