And let's start dishing the REAL ODDS that 'Family Guy' has to become (perhaps) the second! What do YOU think? Read my blog item above first, please, before piping in -- there's a lot to think about there. TX
Can it? Sure. Will it? I say no. Unless it rated higher in the popular vote than any of us imagine, I just don't see it being top 3 in the panels. I think the demographics of the panels really helps the show and give it a fighting chance but probably not enough.
Okay, Lindsay, are you forgetting that I was a professional twice over— an analyst and a therapist. The world’s first analrapist.
I think it can. I know it has been said that it ranked #9 or #10 on the popular vote, but is that known for certain??
By all accounts, it got a great reception at the screening. I think people want to underestimate because it is an animated series and they think that makes it less deserving, but I would not be surprised if it sneaks in, considering it DOES deliver the laughs more than 80% of the other shows in the Top 10.

I'm with Boomer in believing it was either 9 or 10 on pop. It DEFINITELY wasn't higher than 8 or 7 at best. And I think 7 would've been an effin miracle. There's no way it's gonna average into the nod.
Please, please, please let all this hysteria be for nothing. If the dispiriting "Family Guy" gets a nomination while "The Wire" gets shut out (sad, but likely), I'm ready for ATAS to disband, because anybody else could do their jobs better than they do.
"A movie is not good because it arrives at conclusions you share, or bad because it does not. A movie is not about what it is about. It is about how it is about it: about the way it considers its subject matter, and about how its real subject may be quite different from the one it seems to provide." - Roger Ebert, from the introduction to "Awake in the Dark" (2006)

Yes, I do believe it ranked #9 or #10 on the popular vote. Even if it got in there slightly higher, I am not so convinced that it is getting the top votes some are assuming. Even though all 3 of our secret judges claimed hysterical laughter, none of them ranked the show #1 or #2 (one of them even had it #8). Lots of laughter doesn't mean that a person is actually going to rank the show above some more typical Emmy-type shows.
I would be tempted to bet money that "Family Guy" will not be nominated in the Comedy Series category.
I don't think Family Guy will be nominated, and here's why:
I LOVE the show! I mean, I'm a big fan, I've got a couple of seasons on DVD and everything. My whole family loves the show. However, if I were an Emmy judge, I know that I would have a huge bias against it. It may not be fair, but I think it's realistic that most judges probably don't want an animated series in Comedy Series. As you said, Tom, it probably ranked very low on the popular vote, so the panels would have to rank it extremely high--I just think there's too much of a bias against animated sereis.
Why nominate it in Comedy Series when there's a whole other category for animation? When The Flinstones were nominated, there wasn't a seperate category for animated series, right? I just don't get why Family Guy would go into Comedy, where the odds are far worse.
Saying a animated show can't be nominated for comedy is like saying an hour long show can't either. A comedy is a comedy no matter what form it takes. The only thing that matters is whether or not it is funny. People don't want the Emmy's to be bias but it is starting here on this board and with the person running this site himself, Tom O'Neil.
I agree with Michael comedy is comedy no matter what form it takes. Honestly I believe "Family Guy" has a chance at being nominated. All the bias for it needs to stop now because I think it's absolutely immature for people to say it has no chance just because it's animated. If you all didn't know, animation has been making ground-breaking achievements these past few years. Films like The Incredibles, Finding Nemo, Spirited Away, Monster House, Ratatouille, and just now WALL-E and shows like South Park and Family Guy have all surprised me a lot these past few years and they still don't get the respect they deserve and it's a shame.
Besides I've seen the episodes Family Guy, Ugly Betty, and 30 Rock submitted, and trust me I had the most laughs from Family Guy and both FG and 30 Rock deserve to be in. Even with "Wicked" in it Ugly Betty has no chance at all...
I will watch the other submitted episodes today

I am thinking that the popular vote killed its chances. I also believe it couldn't have ranked higher than 9th or 10th. And I don't really believe it will get enough 1st or 2nd place votes to get it nominated.
However, I could be wrong. I won't be shocked if it does makes it in.
Originally posted by Michael Kennedy: where are people getting the idea that this placed 9th or 10th in popular vote? That is purely speculation started by one of the moderators here.
Because most of the other shows listed were on the top ten last year and have been shown considerable Emmy love before and thus are PROBABLY higher than Family Guy. Pushing Daisies & Flight are the only other two newbies on the list. True nobody knows for sure (shows like Ugly Betty & Weeds could have dropped in popularity with poor seasons) but it is a pretty safe bet that FG placed at least in the btm 3 or 4.
I'm shocked to see it in the top 10, but I don't think it will make the final list, partly because its animated, mostly because it doesn't really deserve it (not as much as most of those other shows).
