So the Battlestar Galactica session Wednesday night was frakking awesome. (Hosted by the L.A. Times and theenvelope.com -- thank you!) We got to see the mid-season finale, all 500 of us, and all I can say is, I can't wait for the second half of the season. I won't be giving any spoilers though. Sorry! But it's every bit as epic as a BSG finale should be.
Present were Mary McDonnell (Roslin), Katee Sockhoff (Starbuck), Tricia Helfer (Six), and Ronald Moore (showrunner). A couple of interesting questions/comments gleaned from the Q&A:
-Moore never imagined religion would play such a big part in the show. The miniseries only originally had one line in it ("God is love," from Six) -- a line Moore thought was pretty cool, so he added it in. And when SciFi read the script, the network heads liked that line so much that they asked him to add more religion into the show. Imagine! Network bigwigs giving good, solid notes!
-The Cylons' belief in one God, versus the humans' belief in many Gods, was also addressed. Moore admitted that it was another thing that kind of just happened, that he didn't put a lot of thought in. Since many of the human names had aspects of Greek mythology, he surmised that they'd be polytheistic. And in an effort to make the show more interesting, he made the Cylons monotheistic, because it would open up a lot of doors down the line.
-The spinoff series Caprica is filming right now up in Vancouver, and the actors of BSG say that the cast of that series look up to them like they're some sort of parental figures. They're all excited about watching their universe live on through the new series.
-Mary McDonnell has just read the script for the series finale, and she said that it puts the entirety of the previous four seasons in a different light. She said that she's excited for fans to discover the finale, and then for us to re-watch the entire show and glean new things from whatever's eventually revealed. Cool, eh?
