Atypical,

Thanks for the links to DVDActive.com. I had not previously been to the Web site, considering that I'm used to TVShowsOnDVD.com.

Thanks. bow

This was an ad at the beginning of the season in a magazine, but it looks odd on the DVD cover. Huffman looks like she was cut and pasted in.
It also really annoys me that Sheridan (as fun as she is on the show) is included on the DVD cover when she's barely in half the episodes, and only had MAYBE 5 where she's prominently featured.

Here is a review of the DVD set to season 3 of "Scrubs", out today (May 9th, 2006):
-----------------------------------------------------------
'Scrubs' Season Three
See the maturation of a comedy in extras-packed set;
by Rick Porter
Zap2it.com
May 9 2006

We're not suggesting that you lay out 40 bucks for 21 minutes or so of comedy, but there's one particular episode on the season three DVD set of "Scrubs" that's worth a good fraction of the retail price.

That would be "My Screwup," a February 2004 episode featuring guest star Brendan Fraser that plays a "Sixth Sense"-style mind game with the audience. But don't take our word for it:

"[The DVD set] has one of my favorite episodes on it, the one with Brendan Fraser," "Scrubs" creator Bill Lawrence says at a Las Vegas party celebrating the DVD release and the wrapping of the show's current season. "I think it's the best episode we've ever done of the show."

"My Screwup" is also emblematic of the way the show matured in its third season. Onscreen, J.D. (Zach Braff) and his fellow residents are a little more experienced on the job, and Turk (Donald Faison) and Carla (Judy Reyes) get married. Creatively, season three also marked the time when "Scrubs" really hit a groove in balancing over-the-top jokes and effective drama.

It's also the season that other people at the hospital started to notice the Janitor (Neil Flynn), who previously had interacted almost exclusively with J.D.

"The thinking there was that if the show only lasted one year, the Janitor would have been fictional," Flynn says at the launch party at the Palms Hotel. "So that was good for me when I could interact with the other characters. It gave me more to do, more variety."

The DVD set is pretty well packed with extras, including two audio commentaries (though not, alas, on "My Screwup"), the usual deleted scenes and gag-reel footage, and several featurettes, ranging from an explanation of Elliot's (Sarah Chalke) early-season makeover to a piece on the various dogs that cast and crew members bring to the show's set, an abandoned L.A. hospital.

"The reason the show still survives is that we have a core group of fans that follows it everywhere," Lawrence says of the group he affectionately calls "our nerds." "So we really go to great lengths to do something extra. There are a lot of interviews, a lot of extras, so hopefully people that enjoyed the show before will enjoy the DVD."

Among the more entertaining extras is one called "Robert Keeps Talking." It's an interview with Robert Maschio, who plays oversexed surgical resident The Todd, who goes on at length about his association with Lawrence and his character.

As it turns out, Maschio can be chatty in person as well.

"I have a lot to say," Maschio says. "They all make fun of me on set, because I'll literally have like one line or two lines, and I'll always be in the corner practicing my lines. The thing is, they all have scenes, but I have to come in and nail a joke that one time.

"They make fun of me all the time for being a little too serious about my comedy, but I don't care. I'm the only one on national TV in a banana hammock, and it looks good."

So there you have it: Twenty-two episodes of fine comedy, a prolonged glimpse behind the scenes for serious fans, and a few minutes of unadulterated Todd. What's not to like?

RATING: TV-14
PRICE: $39.99
TIME: 7 hours, 56 minutes (three discs)
DVD EXTRAS: Two audio commentaries, deleted and alternate scenes, gag reel, interview with Robert Maschio, featurettes "Scrubs Factor," "The New Elliot," "What Up, Dawg," "Long-Term Residents," "Is There a Doctor in the House?," "Twist and Shoot."

DVD review of season 6 of "The West Wing" (released on May 9th, 2006):
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
'The West Wing: Season Six'
The White House stuff was a bore, but the campaign episodes are worth watching
By Daniel Fienberg
Zap2it.com

It was in the sixth season that I made peace with the fact that post-Aaron Sorkin, "The West Wing" was never going to be sparkling, witty or hilarious ever again. Instead, in the second season of the John Wells administration, "The West Wing" settled into the tone that would carry it through to its finale -- self-serious, high-minded, often disappointingly over-extended (all things the Sorkin shows were as well) and leaden (something the Sorkin shows rarely were), but yet still more intelligent and thoughtful than just about anything else on TV.

Now new on DVD, the sixth season began with a jumbled bang -- President Bartlet (Martin Sheen) brokers a Middle East accord, Leo McGarry had a heart attack (tragically looking forward to actor John Spencer's real-life death late last year) and, in the season's most absurd (but dramatically fruitful) twist, C.J. Cregg (Allison Janney) became Chief of Staff. Thank You! However, the season finds its footing soon after with the introduction of the main candidates for President Bartlet's job -- Congressman Matt Santos (Jimmy Smits), a Democrat from Texas, and California's Republican Senator Arnold Vinick (Alan Alda).

While the six-disc set includes a smattering of bonus features, the biggest advantage of owning the season is the ability to just about ignore anything that happened during the season in the White House. Yes, C.J.'s promotion gave Janney a chance to show off some dramatic chops and injected the popular character into an assortment of high-pressure new situations. Yes, the return of the President's M.S. let Sheen do possibly his best work yet, trying to be the world's most powerful man, while being incapable of movement. And yes, Spencer's storyline featured some great acting that has risen to the level of heartbreaking thanks to tragic events. But never has the show's weekly national or international crisis-of-the-week structure seemed so superficial and pointless.

On the campaign trail, though, the season was alive and insightful, offering the best glimpse of the primary process this side of Robert Altman's classic "Tanner." That the writers and directors were able to make episodes on ethanol subsidies seem alive is impressive and "2162 Votes" -- the finale set against the Democratic convention -- was one of the series' best. In Santos, the writers created a policy wonk who you'd follow into battle, while Vinick was the dream Republican that even people to the far left couldn't help but admire.

The DVDs feature a trio of commentaries by an assortment of writers, producers and directors, all impressively mechanical, in-depth and silence free. The featurette "C.J. Cregg: From Press Secretary to Chief of Staff" offers little insight unless you figured that Allison Janney's co-stars hate her. If so, you'll be shocked to discover that she's respected and adored by all. The only other bonus is an easily found Easter egg conversion with Spencer, a touching sight that probably should have been moved to the center of the packaging out of admiration for the late actor.

STUDIO: Warner Bros.
RELEASE DATE: May 9
RATING: NR
PRICE: $59.98
TIME: 949 minutes
DVD EXTRAS: Episodic commentaries; "C.J. Cregg: From Press Secretary to Chief of Staff"; John Spencer conversation Easter egg

I am going to get Threshold and AD. Threshold was so much better than Invasion and all the other Lost wannabes. It could have competed with Lost for Best Drama. Threshold was such a great show.

WILLIAM PETERSEN: Well, this is a shock. The only explanation for this is that somehow in the last year, every one of you tried to act with rubber gloves and tweezers.

I agree: I don't understand the whole edition thing. I doubt they are that extra specially loaded... I hate when the DVDs of TV shows don't match. A white cover for season one of Desperate Housewives, and now a very, very dark cover with a stupid "special edition" logo on the side. Laaaame!

RIP: Best Supporting Actress nomination for Jennifer Garner for "Juno"
