When we asked Katherine Heigl why her name is not on the TV academy's list of Emmy contenders, she issued this statement to Gold Derby:
“I am truly grateful for the honor that the Academy bestowed upon me last year. I did not feel that I was given the material this season to warrant an Emmy nomination and in an effort to maintain the integrity of the Academy organization, I withdrew my name from contention. In addition, I did not want to potentially take away an opportunity from an actress who was given such materials.”
This could be very accurate for her. Her reel would be very weak this year as her character did not get really any meaty scenes all season. In fact the show was on a decline until the last three episodes of the season turned it around and even then Katherine was not really a vocal point. Sandra Oh should do the same thing - only one scene can save her and that is where she expresses her real feeling for Burke and his career. The true standouts on this show - and all in the finale - were Chandra Wilson, Justin Chambers, and Ellen Pompeo. No one else ont his show deserves a nom - and really only Chandra does anyway and Pompeo.
Sounds to me like she is using this to take a jab at the writers/Shonda Rhimes.

From all accounts I've read, this was not Heigl's season and she didn't quite have the material to back up a potential Emmy nod. Honestly, I think that was nice of her to do because she would have made the top ten. The door is now open for another actress, who may have had that great season, to get into that ten.
I think this is a VERY noble thing on Heigl's part; I haven't watched Grey's Anatomy this season but I have heard from people on here and elsewhere that she wasn't this season's standout....of course, I can't judge myself in this case.
I think I may now have some respect for her if this is really true and this is coming from someone who has never liked Katherine Heigl at all!!
I completely believe her. Now had she not won last year, I wonder if she would have still kept her name out. Hmm... The show only had two top supporting players all year: Chandra Wilson and Sara Ramirez.
Good for Heigl. More people should be like her.

I believe her. She just didn't have any good material this year. I'm glad she's doing it for the right reasons and giving others a chance that they might not have had.

This is a pointed slam at the material she was given this season; there is going to be far more fallout from this than from pinning the blame on her publicist or agent or whoever was supposed to submit her. If she was going to lie to spare their feelings, she almost certainly wouldn't use this as a reason.

I think she is noble for doing it but I also agree that this is a slam at the show/writers/material given. She is not so innocent here - had she felt someone else deserved a chance she should have said that and left it alone. She made a point to say it was material, what other reason would she say that for other than a slam? Remember this is the girl that made bad remarks about Knocked Up after it was released and made her a movie star!

I've read that many on the show had problems with the way their stories were going and even Rhimes herself admitting some mistakes. As much as I don't really like Heigl or her personality - I think she is being honest here. She just seems like the type of person that if she did forget she would say she forgot.
If the best thing the writers can give you this season is rescuing a deer, then you really should exclude yourself from contention.
I honestly admire Katherine Heigl for doing that. though I must also agree with one poster who said that if she didnt win last year, would she still do the same?
But of course, we got to expect the lots of haters who will claim that her win was already a fluke and she's just doing this to render back the Emmu she "stole."
But kudos Katherine. I hope other actors will realize this.

Well, I've already posted comments like this several times. Heigl is bang on. She had no material this season that was worthy of an Emmy nom. Sure it's noble of her, but it also comes off a little smug and childish. She's a supporting character on a show with a large cast. She's not gonna be handed great material all the time.

I don't think she's expecting for great material but more of a decent material. I rmemeber during Knocked Up days that she was syaing she didn't like the "Gizzie" storyline and she believed that it was just for ratings sake.
If the best storyline they can give you involves a deer or stealing someone else's husband, then it's good to stay on the safe side.

I think she is just being honest as she was with Knocked Up. She speaks her mind and is not afraid to have an opinion or tell it like it is. It is quite refreshing in Hollywood where everyone hides behind carefully worded responses from a publicst.
Also she did not slam Knocked Up at all - she must have said 100 times how great the experience was, how much she enjoyed the movie, how grateful she was for the opportunity but that is rarely reported. Her Vanity Fair interview where she said the movie was "a little sexist.." was the so called slam. She also continued to say that she understood that she understood that the characters were exaggerated and had to be for the humour to work. It certainly was not a case of slamming the movie.
I think she probably would have made the Emmy shortlist and she has performed better than most of her co-stars, particularly given that some of the storylines she has had to work with have been quite ridiculous. I agree its a noble gesture and if anyone from Grey's does deserve to win it has to be Chandra Wilson. Noone else should even be nominated from the show this year.

she's being honest, she's being a nice person, a nice actor, and a very very good competitor.
She already won, she can't win, she might get nominated for fame alone over somebody more deserving....
The true supporting actress this season, deserving of an Emmy is Chandra Wilson for Tucker's episode, when he was in the hospital. It's Emmy bait and it's classic Miranda Bailey from beggining to end.
Nobody can top her on that cast. What Heigl did was logical and honest on her part.
An actor does what we've wanted them to do all along--take herself out of consideration when she has no material--and some members attack for it and/or accuse her of having ulterior motives. I wish more actors would follow her example.

This is a very good thing that she's doing. I really do think that she not one of those Emmy whores. She knew she didn't have any material & since she already one she's over it. So good going for Katie Heigl. Like it has been said I wish other actors/actresses followed her example. Maybe next yr. If the show gets good again & if she's given S.2 worthy material I can get behind her being nom & wining again.

I have so much respect for her doing this. I do think she would've gotten top 10 andstill with more material then what some winners have won for in the past, but it's good she is giving other Actors and co-stars a chance instead of hogging all the nominations like we see Actors do year after year.

I've got to disagree with the Heigl lovefest in here.
Publicly blaming the writers? Sounds incredibly self-important to me.
Removing herself from the campaign is fine. No harm in doing that; good for her for giving someone else a chance. But to give such a statement like she did is just too pretentious. Pull your name, but don't pat yourself on the back for it.

I believe her. I also believe this was a way to publicly slam the head honchos at Grey's Anatomy.
I've heard many rumors that she is simply unhappy with the way her character is being handled.
