What destoryed SATC? This thread is obviously for those who think there was a great decline in the quality of SATC.
I have been watching the early years (1-2) of SATC and the quality of the show was at its best. Carrie's puns and metaphors were plausible. The questions had some relevance. And the show had something to say. It was about loneliness and happiness of singlehood. It seemes to be groundbreaking in it's premise and frank sexual talk. And it even had some dark moments like Samantha being drawn on by her plastic surgeon, the lesbians shunning a frustrated Charlotte, etc.
What happened to the show? Why'd the performances become increasingly over the top? Plots centered around the newst drink or whatever was fashionable. Why'd it become a bad soap? Is it because Darren Star relinquished creative control to Michael Patrick King?
If anything,I'm one of the people who think that the first season of the show was the most amateurish. The second season was a vast improvement, and it finally reached it peak with the third season [the season when it won the Emmy for Comedy Series], then from there it maintained its high quality level, and probably threw some filler episodes now and then, but still remained as one of the better shows during that time.
So technically, I wasn't able to see the destruction per se.
I hope The Office wins as Best Comedy Series for this year's Emmy Awards.

I agree. Season 1 was a completely different show and not in a good way.
I think the show got better and better as it went along - especially in the development of Miranda/Steve and Charlotte. The growth of Samantha was also portrayed quite well in her cancer story line and her relationship with Smith.
My only quibble - and it is very minor - is that I wish Carrie would have ended up happily alone. I think that would have been the logical and most affirming way to end it with her.

Season 1 was horrible. It looked horrible, the jokes were only okay and it didn't approach issues with as much depth as it did in later seasons.
I think Season 2 was when the show kicked into high gear and became really good, and that seasons 3 and 4 followed in that tradition. Seasons 5 and 6 seemed to be too aware of the fact that the show was iconic and seemed to try to appease to that rather than just telling really great stories. Season six ended the show nicely and was one of the top shows on television that year, but certainly not as good as seasons 2-4.
