A moment of silence for the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences.
"A movie is not good because it arrives at conclusions you share, or bad because it does not. A movie is not about what it is about. It is about how it is about it: about the way it considers its subject matter, and about how its real subject may be quite different from the one it seems to provide." - Roger Ebert, from the introduction to "Awake in the Dark" (2006)

I think it's great that this is a new category, and I can't wait to see the names that they come up with for the first awarding.
Whether or not this Emmy has Ryan Seacrest's name engraved on it already is another issue entirely.

Just the thought of Ryan Seacrest as an Emmy winner makes me gag. With that said, I have no interest in the category. At all. I'll make sure to take a bathroom break when they present it on Emmy night.

Can't wait for Phil Keoghan to win this one too...
I'm not sure why people are surprised/disgusted by this. Look at how much of TV nowadays is reality television. If the Emmys were going to stay at all relevant they would inevitably have had to add more reality TV categories.
Jeff Probst can win for the best Survivor season since the first!
WILLIAM PETERSEN: Well, this is a shock. The only explanation for this is that somehow in the last year, every one of you tried to act with rubber gloves and tweezers.

I would actually prefer to award the "American Idol" contestants than Ryan Seacrest, since what they do requires, you know, talent.
As for the category, I will be pleasantly surprised if it's filled with people like Mike Rowe and Bear Grylls rather than Seacrest and Keoghan. No offense to "The Amazing Race," which I think is the one of the best, if not the best reality show on television, but Keoghan doesn't do enough to warrant an Emmy in his own category (he has won along with "Amazing Race" in the Reality-Competition Program, which is fine with me, but other than explaining the rules and occasionally raising his eyebrow, he doesn't really have much to do). But if this category serves only to award those kinds of hosts, rather than truly deserving hosts of unscripted shows (Mike Rowe for the win!!), then it will truly be a waste.

A moment of silence for the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences.
I wouldn't say that. Even if we all don't admit it at once the fact of the matter is that Reality TV is something that is a part of TV now. And I say the Academy is keeping up w/the changing times w/this new category (Even though they should've introduce this category along w/the Reality Show & Reality Competition categories when they first came out).
All I can say really about this category is that Ryan Seacrest will say sometime down the line that "If it wasn't for me this category wouldn't exist." You know since he's a smug bastard.

I think it's a nice and deserved idea. I think it's great that judges aren't part of the award.
I also believe....VERY MUCH BELIEVE that Ryan Seacrest is NOT going to win.
I would love to see some rules though....Who's in, who's out, what shows, what's "reality" for this category, are competition and program hosts going together, things like that....
And I would also like to know if they're automatically taken out of the best program/competition award....which I assume is what's gonna happen.....
I don't see a point to this category and I'm surprised it was voted on by members of the Academy. If hosts are already included with their series, I don't see a point. Jeff Probst would be incredibly deserving though and the only option form a competitive reality series.
The only two or three reality-competition hosts who deserve noms are Jeff Probst and Phil Keoghan, and maybe Cat Deeley from "So You Think You Can Dance." I'd vote for Probst over all of them (as much as I adore the Phil-iminator) because Probst is actively involved in the storyline of the show and engages the players.
Who knows what Seacrest or Heidi Klum, for example, contribute as producers? But as hosts they walk on, deliver the news, and walk off. I don't mind the current system with these guys getting nominated as part of the overall production team, but to single them out just doesn't work.
Really, the nominees should be folks like Anthony Bourdain ("No Reservations"), Mike Rowe ("Dirty Jobs"), Bear Grylls ("Man Vs. Wild"), Les Stroud ("Survivorman"), Josh Gates ("Destination: Truth"), hosts who actively participate in the action and engage the viewer to draw them into the experience.

Whoever is nominated here won't be nominated again in the program categories as host. There's only one nomination to be had there as stated in the rules. If they're one of the show's producers, then they will be included again.
