And by the way, YOU are the ones that actually voted for these nominees (most of you anyway... some of the ones complaining right now didn't even vote).
Thank you, Boomer! I am glad somebody said it. Let's compliment ourselves on what we got right. Goggins and Paul both got nominated! Jim Parsons, represent! Holloway, whoo-hoo!
I think we made some good choices overall. Byrne snub is sad, but the actual Emmys will make up for it.

I have been on this site for many years and voted for many awards. Rob L tallies your vote but he rarely writes back to you. I am sure your vote was counted.

It is so much fun to start counting your ballots... lots of diverse and interesting choices.
Since we've got a few weeks before the winners are announced, I thought it would be good to bring up a question...
Seems like we have some incredibly good nominees this year and that TV in general is as fine as ever with the number of quality programs and performances these days.
What were the toughest decisions that you had to make in our categories this year as you filled out your ballots? You most likely had a few that really gave you fits. Give your reason(s) behind your final choice(s). Don't offer to many of them, but choose a small number and discuss them here.

Mary-Louise Parker - I always thought that Elizabeth Perkins and Justin Kirk are doing better work than MLP on "Weeds". But during season 4 she was top-notch week after week and really impressed me. Let's give her a win, please!
Vanessa Williams - I gave up on her show but she is always stunning and I would like to give her this award before her buzz will be over completely.
Meditations in Emergency - Powerful episode with both storylines (Drapers and Peggy).
Cast - Mad Men - Fresh faces and the best ensemble on TV right now.

I especially struggled with Ensemble. I think any of the nominees would be worthy and I could make a case for all of them. I ultimately whittled it down to "Mad Men" and "FNL". When it comes to "Mad Men", each actor is so note-perfect that it was hard to vote against. But the show tends to be fragmented in its stories and not all the characters get to interact. I mean, what would you pay to see a good showdown between Betty and Joan? Not gonna happen, though because the show centers on Don and his home life and work life are generally separate orbits. [This is similarly the case with "Lost".] On "FNL", all the characters interrelate regularly and they create a breathtakingly authentic feeling of a real community. That's the definition of ensemble to me, and the reason I voted "FNL".

Since I give my own awards every year -- shameless plug -- making my decisions for the GoldDerby Awards is usually easy. I just think of the people and shows I nominated and awarded and then vote for whichever among my favorites actually made it in. In many cases, there aren't many, making the decision easier than I wish it would be.
For instance, the only drama guest actress nominee who made both my ballot and the GoldDerby TV Awards ballot was Ellen Burstyn, so I voted for her, even though I would place her sixth out of my six nominees. Seriously, did nobody notice Margo Martindale blowing everybody out of the water with her "Dexter" guest arc!? And Susan Sarandon was on "ER" for about ten minutes -- how does that trump Kim Dickens's work on "Friday Night Lights"? And why was Carol Burnett's Nosferatu impression deemed better than Teri Polo's searing work on a different episode of the same show? We at GoldDerby complain a lot about big names trumping merit, but I think we end up committing the same sins when we check off names. But I digress.
Actually, the only category I had to give some serious thought to was Ensemble of the Year. I consider drama and comedy ensembles differently, so I had to make a tough choice between "The Office" and "Friday Night Lights." Actually, I can't remember which I picked, LOL.

"A movie is not good because it arrives at conclusions you share, or bad because it does not. A movie is not about what it is about. It is about how it is about it: about the way it considers its subject matter, and about how its real subject may be quite different from the one it seems to provide." - Roger Ebert, from the introduction to "Awake in the Dark" (2006)

Yep
I didn't see Margo on Dexter, but I loved her on The Riches so I am going to take your word on her performance. I loved Susan on ER and she did w/her little time on the show what some of these nominees didn't made me care and I was connected to her performance.
