Well, it's about damn time!

This just in: HBO renews In Treatment
by Michael Ausiello

HBO has renewed In Treatment for a third season after closing a deal with lead shrink Gabriel Byrne. But that’s not the big news. No, the big news is that actor-turned-writer Dan Futterman and his TV producer-wife Anya Epstein (Tell Me You Love Me) have taken over as co-showrunners.

Production on the drama will resume in early 2010 with the third season slated to premiere later in the year.

Casting is underway for Byrne’s new crop of patients. As always, referrals are greatly appreciated.

I have a feeling this show is gonna get soapy and more plot-driven, which can be terrible or beneficial. We'll see. This is by far the best show on HBO, so I hope the format isn't altered drastically.

And why is Dan Futterman not gay? That's not right.

Congrats Kristen! All the PD haters can (SPOILER ALERT) Suck it!

I'm not worried about the direction of the show necessarily. "Tell Me You Love Me" was a fantastic, character-driven show, and the format of "In Treatment" would make it very hard to turn it plot-driven. On this show, character is story. And I'm thrilled to hear the show is returning.

"A movie is not good because it arrives at conclusions you share, or bad because it does not. A movie is not about what it is about. It is about how it is about it: about the way it considers its subject matter, and about how its real subject may be quite different from the one it seems to provide."
- Roger Ebert, from the introduction to "Awake in the Dark" (2006)

"Tell Me You Love Me" was unwatchable beyond the penis flashings. But that's just me.

Yay "In Treatment"! I'm glad that a season three order was reached. "Tell Me You Love Me" was excellent, so I have high hopes for these new show runners. I'd be thrilled if Jane Alexander ended up being one of the patients this season. I wouldn't have minded Dan Futterman as one of the patients either. Hope they end up casting some strong actors for this, b/c this is a true actor's showcase with the right material, like the stunning work from Blair Underwood, Mia Wasikowska, John Mahoney, Melissa George, and Alison Pill (and every one of them Emmy snubbed! Boooooo.).

G'Day,
Great news, am loving this show (up to week 2 of season 2) although I don't think they needed new showrunners, hopefully the series won't be hurt.

I don't know about anyone else but I would love to see Martin Sheen on this show.

Congratulations West Wing, Emmys most honored drama. 27 Emmys including 4 best drama series

Great news! I wish that HBO producers would offer a role in a 3rd season to Cameron Diaz. She's such an underrated actress and derserves a role she can sink her teeth into. If anyone from HBO read this, get her for a third season!

Diaz has had her chances and she's come up short every time with the exception of 'Malkovich', but I'm sure that had more to do with her wardrobe and the direction than her abilities.

I'm surprised Tell Me You Love Me went nowhere, I heard the creator ran out of ideas.

The girl just doesn't have much range. I like her when she manages to find the levity between her crzy, flighty, Cali-girl persona and her overreaching Oscar-bait. I certainly don't want to see her every week b*tching to her therapist.

Yay!

I am kind of leary of the new showrunners, b/c a perfect example for me of a new showrunner coming in on a show is Brothers & Sisters. What started out as a fresh take on a time old tale of family drama quickly descended into a plot soapy based mess. Whether Jon Baitz was booted I can't remember, but now what was once a compelling family drama is now a mereley average show.

And didn't the chick who did "Porn, but W/Actual Acting & Well Written Dialogue" ran out of ideas? Oh boy!

Hopefully we gt another top notch group of actors and characters.

You wouldn't have to watch her weeks. Wink

And "Things You Can Tell Just By Looking At Her" and "Vanilla Sky"..

In 2009 the three best TV female performances in a drama series were all snubbed.
Shame to Emmy voters for not nominating January Jones, Alison Pil and Chloe Sevigny.

She was ok in the former and awful in the latter.

That would make up for that bad mess she did on DH last season.

Pfft! The writing was a mess - not her.

I respectfully disagree ashmores.

The writing was not on the same level of her acting ability, which made her performaces baffling to watch at times cringeworthy.

If you know an actor can give excellent dramatic and comedic performances, you know it probably isn't the actors fault that their performances are below par - it all has to do with the writing, IMO. Especially an actor on her skill level.

I understand what you're getting at, but I thought she was fine with what she was given.

I'd love to see her on this show though. I'm trying to think of a male actor that I'd like to see.
