These Top 10 lists have a lot of problems (As we've all pointed out), but I figure we should at least focus slightly on the glimmers of hope that one day, maybe, Emmy voters might be able to turn this ship around.
At my blog, Cultural Learnings, I created my own list of the Top 10 Pleasant Surprise candidates for the various awards, acknowledging that they're not all shocking but nonetheless pleasing to this discerning TV fan.
However, that's my opinion: I'm curious to see, if you had to choose only two or three, who would be the candidates you're most pleased to see make the Top 10s against the odds (Or, against the will of the Emmy complacent)?

Christian Clemenson over someone like John Larroquette.
WILLIAM PETERSEN: Well, this is a shock. The only explanation for this is that somehow in the last year, every one of you tried to act with rubber gloves and tweezers.

Quite a few. Mary McDonnell being the very best of the bunch. Not that she'll get nominated, no matter how amazing her tape is(and it is outstanding), but at least they know she exists. There are certainly many, many good semi-finalists. Of course, leaving out Connie is just criminal, but this is a positive thread, so I'll just leave that alone.
Okay, Lindsay, are you forgetting that I was a professional twice over— an analyst and a therapist. The world’s first analrapist.
"The Wire" and "Flight of the Conchords" among the top ten series lists.
Among actors:
Jane Alexander, "Tell Me You Love Me" Bryan Cranston, "Breaking Bad" Zeljko Ivanek, "Damages" Mary McDonnell, "Battlestar Galactica" (pending confirmation) Blair Underwood, "In Treatment" Dianne Wiest, "In Treatment"
"A movie is not good because it arrives at conclusions you share, or bad because it does not. A movie is not about what it is about. It is about how it is about it: about the way it considers its subject matter, and about how its real subject may be quite different from the one it seems to provide." - Roger Ebert, from the introduction to "Awake in the Dark" (2006)

Good choices all around. I second the mentions for McBrayer, The Wire, and Flight of the Conchords. Even though I don't watch them, it's also good to see the nods Cranston, McDonnell, Pushing Daisies and the supporting players on Damages and Mad Men.
Disappointments are inevitable every year, but you kind of become conditioned to them. Pleasant surprises you never become conditioned to...thankfully.
