Y&R is the one that is starting, what could be the final, a new trend in Daytime. The team over there want ppl. from outside of Daytime in roles either new or famous. Let's take what Nelson just reported for example number 1. Kelly McGillis was going to be the new Jill Abbott if Jess and crew didn't come to an agreement. Nothing against McGillis, but what? And the same w/the casting of Michael Muhney as the new Adam. Are we now in a place in Daytime where the likes of Brian & Erin Pressley, Lindsay Hartley, etc. are not being on the top of casting directors minds and being replaced by actors and actress of yesteryr, prominent Primetime guest/recurring actors, and newbies right out of modeling catelogs.

Discuss.

Well, newbies have been taking over soaps for the better half of the last two decades, but you're right that it seems that former primetime or film stars are getting more play these days. It's sad when someone as pretty and talented as Erin Hershey Presley or Lindsay Hartely can't get daytime work!

And to add on to this pt. in my first post, if they are doing this for the acting department, why don't we have this going on in the directing, producing, and the most important WRITING department of Daytime? I mean what is the deal of recycling hacks and hiring your girl to helm a show when they are ppl out there w/passion and vision waiting to be heard, but I digress(sp?).

The Kelly McGillis thing is a total WTF for me, but I guess who knows how that would have worked out.

It doesn't really seem like a new trend to me that minor players of primetime are taking daytime roles. I think it's a product of what's out there in terms of acting roles and who's willing to do what. More primetimers are probably willing to come down to the daytime world for steady work because with reality TV being ever more popular, there may not be as many roles in primetime anymore.

It also seems to me, and it's just kind of a passing thought, that there aren't many roles being cast in the age category that would include Erin Hershey and Lindsay Hartley. Most soaps seem to be looking for either high school/college age girls, or women old enough to play their mothers. That I find odd. I'd love to see Lindsay Hartley as a recast for Chloe on DAYS. (No offense, Nadia Bjorlin.)

With writers, hiring from primetime has yielded, on average, worse results that recycling daytime talent. Chuck Pratt is floundering on AMC, and LML is credited with destroying Y&R.

The whole issue is pretty interesting, east/west. I'm going to think more about it.

Hogan Sheffer was hired from outside of daytime and had great success on ATWT. Maybe some of the writers from those lame reality shows should try their hands at legitimate soaps LOL.

I don't have any problem with soaps casting from anywhere, as long as they are casting talented people who could play the role. Acting is a tough business, and just because someone found success in primetime or movies for awhile, doesn't mean that those roles are always there for them.
Plus, back in the 60s-80s, soaps were a haven for older movie actors who couldn't find work in that genre anymore- this is not a new thing.
Finally, no matter how much we grouse, it IS about the ratings...soap ratings MUST go up or daytime will die. I have no problem with a soap casting a (relative) name actor over an unknown if it will bring more eyes to the television set...times are tough, and you do what you can to stay alive.

I have a theory/question to enter you guys thoughts.

Do yall think Maria decided to do her castings outside from the Daytime stars, b/c of her failed coupe to get Finola Hughes to play Sabrina's mom?

I mean the Frons put a stop to that and promise Finola & the fans a "big summer storyline" that never happened. Maybe Maria didn't want to deal w/the pettiness of stealing ppl from the other network. I say that knowing that she got both Liz Hendrickson & Billy Miller from AMC so maybe I am way off base?

That's a good question. It probably was a factor with Michael Muhney, because casting him was sort of an emergency situation and Maria must have known she wouldn't have time to play games with other EPs and networks.

Should this tread continue?

Yes or No

If out want add explanation.

I say no as fo now, b/c some of the roles that have been cast of late could have been cast w/ppl who have had Daytime experience.
