GUIDING LIGHT Jan 2, 2008 Justin Deas - Supportng Actor Writing
Well GL started the New Year off on a positive note with a great eppy regarding who really is the Mayor of Springfield. Buzz realizes through a series of events that Dorris Wolfe did indeed win the election, and not him. It was a great tape for Deas and a very well written eppy. Orlaugh Cassidy's Dorris & Catlin Van Zandt's Ashlee really are one of the best things David Kriezman has done with this show.

Marlena is planning on spending New Years Eve at home but changes her mind and goes out with Bo, Hope, Kayla and Steve. Marlena's mind wonders throughout dinner and when she is outside she runs into Crystal again and demands to know more about what she knows of John and about Brady's disappearance. Later she heads to the police station to have another talk with Chloe.

I agree. I totally loved the episode as a whole.

January 2, 2008 The Young and the Restless Peter Bergman as Jack Abbott Lead Actor
Jack is surprised that Ashley has come to visit him. They discuss their messed up personal lives and then he confesses to her that Gloria has a letter written by John proving that Jack tricked John into cutting Gloria out of his will before he died. When Jack tries to defend his actions, Ashley cuts him off and tells him that no matter what his personal feeling for Gloria, if their father wanted her to have the money, then she should have it. Jack later sees John's ghost, who reiterates the same thing. The next morning, Jack is surprised to find Sharon and Noah coming back to the mansion.
Some really good stuff from Bergman today. He does sorrow and self-pity better than most on Daytime. Eileen Davidson was great as Ashley, too. I really wish she would come back to Y&R full-time. She and Bergman always pull the best out of each other. Its scenes like this that renew my hope in Y&R.

Justin Daes started off the year really really strong.
WILLIAM PETERSEN: Well, this is a shock. The only explanation for this is that somehow in the last year, every one of you tried to act with rubber gloves and tweezers.

Today, I watched more than just the usual 1 soap that I watch, and man are they all kicking the year off with some interesting storylines that have potential! I'm citing quite a few things here, but here we go!
Wednesday, January 2, 2008 The Young and the Restless Peter Bergman (as Jack Abbott) OUTSTANDING LEAD ACTOR IN A DRAMA SERIES
quote:
ANALYSIS Jack is pleasantly shocked by a visit from his sister Ashley (Eileen Davidson). As they begin to talk and reminisce about their late father, John (Jerry Douglas), Jack also updates Ashley about the battle that he's about to enter with Gloria (Judith Chapman) over their father's estate. Jack is surprised when Ashley decides against him and advises him to give Gloria what she's due. They also discuss Jack's marriage woes regarding Sharon.
Bergman was very strong today, which most have come to expect. The best scene here was his conversation with his father's ghost. He displayed a lot of emotion after being told (by his own sister, no less) that he was wrong about Gloria and that he needs to fulfill his father's wishes by giving her what's rightfully hers.

Wednesday, January 2, 2008 Guiding Light Justin Deas (as Buzz Cooper) OUTSTANDING SUPPORTING ACTOR IN A DRAMA SERIES
quote:
ANALYSIS The first episode of the show's new year revolved around political scandal in Springfield. As all in town are ready to celebrate Buzz Cooper's mayoral election, it is revealed to him that the election was fixed and that he really hadn't won. Instead, he'd lost the race to Doris Wolfe.
Deas's character suffered a lot in today's episode, and he perfectly played out those emotions. He had mixed feelings regarding what to do about the new information involving the election, and though it wasn't what he wanted, he played on his better judgment and decided to tell the truth. The final scene where he demolished his campaign headquarters was Buzz's pivotal moment in the episode. All the emotions that were mounting throughout the hour finally exploded, and Deas nailed it.

Wednesday, January 2, 2008 The Bold and the Beautiful Susan Flannery (as Stephanie Forrester) OUTSTANDING LEAD ACTRESS IN A DRAMA SERIES
quote:
ANALYSIS Stephanie and Brooke (Katherine Kelly Lang) both revel in thought as to what the right solution is to solve their bitter rivalry. Brooke accidentally reveals that it wasn't her father that shot Stephanie, but her brother Storm (William deVry) instead. She tells Stephanie that if she wants all wrongs to be forgiven, she'll try her hardest to get both her father and her brother freed of their messes involving Stephanie's shooting, but Stephanie vehemently rejects Brooke's pleas. Eric (John McCook) also stops by to drop off the divorce papers for Stephanie to sign so he can marry Brooke's sister, Donna (Jennifer Gareis). Eric and Stephanie both discuss the state of their marriage, and Stephanie tells Eric that she'll do anything to save it.
Flannery was amazing today. She played well off of both John McCook (Eric) and Katherine Kelly Lang (Brooke). Her performance today was very subtle and understated, all the while conveying all her character's feelings to maximum effect. All her disoriented emotions were captured in this quiet, yet effective, performance.

I agree with you that daytime as a whole started off great, and gave me a renewed sense of optimism in the genre. And I ditto your citation for Flannery. It's been awhile since I've seen Flannery give an honest and humble performance, and today was it. Not too much, but just enough emotion to convey her character's emotion.
Also good call with the Bergman citation. He put on a very understated performance today and it showed. Usually I'm more into his "1, 2, knock out punches," but today was a nice, subtle, sincere performance for him.
Lastly, the little I saw of Justin Deas was great. I'm not always fond of his acting antics, but the man knows how to bring it.
I agree with all mentioned regarding today's episode of GL. This is a good episode for an Outstanding Drama Series reel, and it was represented best by Justin Deas who really played all the emotions necessary for a character who is dealing with a moral dilemma. Hoping for another strong GL year!

Agree on Martha. Martha Madison, for me, was the standout performer in the John Black death storyline and for that alone, deserves a nomination. This week, however, I've found her to be even better, as she admitted to Shawn that she cheated on him. Her work has been stellar and I'm actually enjoying Days more than I have since the late 90's and Madison is a big reason why.
Okay, Lindsay, are you forgetting that I was a professional twice over— an analyst and a therapist. The world’s first analrapist.
Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series Anthony Geary as Luke Spencer, General Hospital
Today was a good tape for him if he wants a comedic tape. My favorite part of the eppy was how he was the judge, his lawyer, the prosecutor, and my fave the bailiff but in all today was a standout tape for Mr. Geary

^^^To me it was a poor attempt at being funny. Four Geary's in one scene is too much too handle. The only part I enjoyed was Jane Elliot, and Traci saying that she volunteered to testify, lol.

Completely agree. I thought this was one of the best comedic performances he has ever given. For me, the best part had to have been without a doubt seeing Bobbie, and Leslie.
Supporting Actress Drama Series Sonya Eddy
I have liked her the last few days, waiting for her son to call, and if she could submit yesterday, and today as one tape, it would be great tape for her, but she can't, and although I am not sure she will get the material, her talents make her a bright spot for this show, and I had to give her some recognition.

Craig becomes a raving lunatic, and freaks out Meg's old nurse friends over a (mock) baby, and then waves the fake baby at Paul and Rosanna, and then tares into Meg, about why he should love something that isn't even his.

I agree about this citation. Watching her scenes today, I said to myself, "Sonya Eddy needs a contract."
"A movie is not good because it arrives at conclusions you share, or bad because it does not. A movie is not about what it is about. It is about how it is about it: about the way it considers its subject matter, and about how its real subject may be quite different from the one it seems to provide." - Roger Ebert, from the introduction to "Awake in the Dark" (2006)

I thought I read a while back that Sonya was signed to a contract. I think it was around the time Nightshift ended.

If that's the case, bravo! She's been such an asset to the show, but I thought she was still working on a recurring basis.

Thursday, January 3, 2008 Friday, January 4, 2008 As the World Turns Scott Bryce (as Craig Montgomery) OUTSTANDING LEAD ACTOR IN A DRAMA SERIES
quote:
ANALYSIS Craig is upset by the possibility that Meg's (Marie Wilson) baby may be Paul's (Roger Howarth) and not his. He takes his anger and frustration out by mixing alcohol and prescription drugs, and by publically lashing out at Paul and Rosanna (Cady McClain).
I wanted to cite Scott Bryce yesterday, but because I'm very unfamiliar with this show, I didn't know who the actor was playing the Craig Montgomery character. I just kept thinking, "man, can this guy act!" Today was no exception. Bryce plays the role of unwanting father perfectly, and he completely nails the aspect that his character has a medical problem. Today's scene in bed with his wife when he repeatedly snatched his hand away from her stomach was very convincing. As we all know, many actors can't pull off playing medically impaired characters, but Bryce pulls it off brilliantly.

Friday, January 4, 2008 The Bold and the Beautiful Jennifer Gareis (as Donna Logan) OUTSTANDING LEAD ACTRESS IN A DRAMA SERIES
quote:
ANALYSIS Donna is highly upset by Stephanie's (Susan Flannery) ultimatum, which forces her to choose between the love of her life, Eric (John McCook), and her brother, Storm's (William deVry), future. She's even more stunned by the fact that her sister, Brooke (Katherine Kelly Lang), seemingly suggests that she should meet the terms of Stephanie's ultimatum because Donna's relationship with Eric is doomed.
Gareis was powerful and displayed raw emotion today. Her scenes with on-screen sister Katherine Kelly Lang were wonderfully played and acted out. Donna was truly disheartened at having to choose between Eric and Storm, and even more upset that Brooke seemed to be siding with Stephanie regarding Donna & Eric's future together (that it wouldn't last). Donna is a distressed woman, and Gareis played it wonderfully and convincingly. From anger, to confusion about what decision is the right one, to distress at the thought of letting her Storm rot in prison, and agony at the thought of letting Eric go, Gareis nailed every single emotion today, and she did it all without the needless histrionics.
