Friday, April 18th, 2008. 'DAYS OF OUR LIVES' Lead Actor - Stephen Nichols (Steve) Supporting Actress - Tamara Braun (Ava) Supporting Actress - Mary Beth Evans (Kayla)
We finally catch an glimpse into Ava's troubled past and the hurt and utter torment she went through when "Patch" left her at the alter years ago. It is also clear from this point that Ava descended into psychological hell since the failed nuptials and has been there ever since. Braun did a fabulous job of displaying the deep hurt that is being masked by sheer psychotic tendencies in Ava. Her final scene was money as she finally just screamed at Steve, telling him that he ripped her life away from her. It was sad, crazy and heartbreaking all at the same time.
She was definetly the MVP of this episode. Strong performances from Mary Beth Evans whose character was forced to listen to her husband talk about his love for another women, and also listen to how Ava felt having Steve ripped away from her...very reminiscent of how Steve was ripped away from herself only years before.
Nichols also was very good here, as he always is.

Bill Paxton, Michael C. Hall and Jonathan Rhys Meyers (Lead Actor in a Drama Series)
THE TUDORS, DEXTER and BIG LOVE (Drama Series, Directing & Writing)
I just watched the last four episodes of DAYS yesterday, and I think it's been a good week. Tamara Braun and Arianne Zuker have both been great this week, but I wanted to throw in this official citation:
Monday, April 14, 2008 Days of our Lives Best Actress Deidre Hall - Marlena Evans
Marlena and John continue their date, and Marlena tries to sort out her feelings for this new John, whether or not she could ever separate him from the husband she once knew, and whether she could grow to love him as he is now.
I thought the scenes with Marlena and John were well written and Deidre Hall played the emotion of it really well. Marlena hadn't shown much vulnerability in this relationship until now, when her eyes filled with fear and confusion. I felt like I completely understood how Marlena felt. Not very showy, but a very strong performance.
Best Younger Actress: Christel Khalil as Lily Winters
Lily struggles with her decision to keep the baby or not. After visiting her mother's old stomping grounds Lily decides to keep the baby.
Christel has been rocking it as of late and Wednesday's episode was a great day for her. I loved how Christel portrayed being torn between her ideal life and the one she has to look forward to. Her scenes in the studio provided some of her strongest acting.

Braun was great and should be prenominated next year for her work.
WILLIAM PETERSEN: Well, this is a shock. The only explanation for this is that somehow in the last year, every one of you tried to act with rubber gloves and tweezers.

Monday, April 21, 2008 Days of our Lives Best Directing Best Actor Stephen Nichols - Steve Johnson Best Supporting Actress Mary Beth Evans - Kayla Johnson Tamara Braun - Ava Vitali
Steve and Kayla try to convince Ava not to kill them after she becomes completely unhinged from recounting how Steve left her at the alter. Later, Ava decides she's going to continue to hold the group prisoner until Kayla gives birth, because she wants to keep the baby for herself.
These actors continued to deliver in these scenes, and Mary Beth Evans really shined during the first half of the episode. All three worked the material beautifully and partnered really well with one another.
Also, just a side note, Kristian Alfonso spent most of the episode being half conscious or unconscious, but she also did a fantastic job in the close-up scene where she passes out. Very good directing and ensemble work.
April-4-2008 Best Actress - Debbi Morgan Best Actor - Darnell Williams
Jesse and Angie renew their vows at the same place they married decades before.
I know this is late but I just caught up with this episode earlier this week and had to cite Morgan and Williams. They have the best chemistry on Daytime if not television, they are utterly magnetic and their performances during the vows were wonderful and rang totally true.
MONDAY APRIL 28, 2008 BEST DRAMA SERIES THE BOLD & THE BEAUTIFUL BEST DIRECTION BEST WRITING BEST ACTOR: WILLIAM DEVRY BEST ACTRESS: KATHERINE KELLY LANG & JENNIFER GAREIS
HOLY F.U.C.K?!!?!!!!!!!!!!!

I wouldn't say Morgan is unbeatble, this is the Daytime Emmy Awards we're talking about, but I certainly think she's the frontrunner at this early stage of the game.
As for B&B, sheer perfection today. I know Nelson had mentioned that last Tuesday's episode of ATWT was the best single episode of daytime drama this season to date, but today's B&B far and away beat that, I would say. In fact, it's one of the best episodes of daytime I've seen in probably 14 years. (Yes, I'm talking about GH and Barbara Jean's heart.)
I would like to add Outstanding Drama Series Writing for B&B to today's notations.

My bad, I misconstrued your post. However, I meant to say that I don't see Debbi as the frontrunner. Contender, yes.

MONDAY APRIL 28, 2008 BEST DRAMA SERIES THE BOLD & THE BEAUTIFUL BEST DIRECTION BEST WRITING BEST ACTOR: WILLIAM DEVRY BEST ACTRESS: KATHERINE KELLY LANG & JENNIFER GAREIS
I was able to catch the follow-up episode, and I agree that Katherine Kelly Lang was sensational in it, though the writing was terrible. The doctor's speech before the heart surgery: "The heart is the nearest address we have for the soul ..." You gotta be kidding me.

"A movie is not good because it arrives at conclusions you share, or bad because it does not. A movie is not about what it is about. It is about how it is about it: about the way it considers its subject matter, and about how its real subject may be quite different from the one it seems to provide." - Roger Ebert, from the introduction to "Awake in the Dark" (2006)

Some dialogue here and there might have been weak but the writing has been very strong.

In an effort to get back to business as usual . . .
Tuesday, April 29, 2008 Days of our Lives Best Younger Actress Rachel Melvin - Chelsea Brady
Chelsea defends Dr. Jonas when Bo begins to blame him for Chelsea's infection. She reacts to the news that she will likely not be able to have children as a result of her infection, and talks to Hope about the guilt she still feels over killing Zack. She says it seems like just punishment, but Hope comforts her and tries to make her understand that Zack's death was an accident.
While the dialogue was not the greatest (especially Hope's lines), Melvin did a beautiful job with these poignant scenes. Chelsea has matured so much since the accident with Zack, and the sorrow and regret she feels over what she did was palpable. She and Hope embracing and saying they loved each other was also a nice touch.
I haven't seen B&B since Monday, but where are all the other citations? I'm sure the show has been rolling all week.
Friday, May 2nd, 2008 Best Actress: Judith Chapman Best Actor: Ted Shackleford
Gloria and Jeff argue about the divorce.
I thought there scenes today were pretty powerful and full of energy. Good job! I also liked the stroll down memory lane between Paul and Lauren, and it irks me that these two talented actors are barely featured.

May 2/08 One Life to Live Best Directing Best Actress: Kassie Depaiva
Todd and Blair argue about Starr running away. Talia and Antonio are reunited.
I thought today's show was directed beautifully, especially the outdoor scenes. Great stuff! Now on to Kassie DePaiva. I though she did a great job today showing Blair's fury and resentment towards Todd. I cheered her on when she called him a bastard, and then later SMACKED him.
