Oustanding Younger Actress

Friday, January 4

KIRSTEN STORMS, General Hospital - The freakout scene at the diner was masterful and I'm so hoping for more of Maxie in 2008. A couple scenes every other day is just not enough of this tiny powerhouse.

Thursday, January 3 & Friday, January 4

CAITLIN VAN ZANDT, Guiding Light - Van Zandt was amazing on both Thursday and Friday as she revealed the truth about having rigged the election. She has such great chemistry with everyone and plays Ashlee with so many layers. I just adore her.

Oustanding Supporting Actor

Friday, January 4

DANIEL COSGROVE, Guiding Light - The new sexier, edgier Bill is a pleasure to watch and Cosgrove was a great blend of charisma, humor, and magnetic sex appeal during his playful scenes with Lizzie and Doris, and later as Coop confronted him in the hallway.

The Bold and the Beautiful
Jennifer Gareis (as Donna Logan)
OUTSTANDING LEAD ACTRESS IN A DRAMA SERIES

quote:

ANALYSIS
Donna is highly upset by Stephanie's (Susan Flannery) ultimatum, which forces her to choose between the love of her life, Eric (John McCook), and her brother, Storm's (William deVry), future. She's even more stunned by the fact that her sister, Brooke (Katherine Kelly Lang), seemingly suggests that she should meet the terms of Stephanie's ultimatum because Donna's relationship with Eric is doomed.

Gareis was powerful and displayed raw emotion today. Her scenes with on-screen sister Katherine Kelly Lang were wonderfully played and acted out. Donna was truly disheartened at having to choose between Eric and Storm, and even more upset that Brooke seemed to be siding with Stephanie regarding Donna & Eric's future together (that it wouldn't last). Donna is a distressed woman, and Gareis played it wonderfully and convincingly. From anger, to confusion about what decision is the right one, to distress at the thought of letting her Storm rot in prison, and agony at the thought of letting Eric go, Gareis nailed every single emotion today, and she did it all without the needless histrionics.

ITA about Gareis on Friday's show. She was a revelation to me in the last half of 2007. Since I wasn't familiar with her Y&R work and she was barely used during her first year at B&B, I never expected much from her. Then, out of nowhere, here she comes. The thing that I like best about her is that she manages not to let Susan Flannery bulldoze over her in their scenes, which is a task not even KKL can manage 100% of the time.

Agree 100% about the kudos being thrown Bryce's way. This is the Bryce that those of us who were aound in the 80s took for granted, when he was constantly given riveting material by Douglas Marland and consistently hit it out of the ballpark.

Go Bryce! Maybe I should tune into ATWT again, but there really isn't any character that interests me at the moment.

I agree about Bryce also, and I'm actually going to throw a bone Martha Byrne's way also.

Best Actress
Martha Byrne - Lily Snyder

Lily sees Holden at the farm and makes an excuse about Dusty standing her up on New Year's Eve. She then goes to meet Dusty, who tells her that he didn't show up because he was getting it on with Emily. Lily is crushed, and later sees Holden at the farm at tells him that she and Dusty are over.

I know Lily hasn't been the most sympathetic character over the last few months, but I really, really felt for her during this episode. During the conversation with Dusty, Byrne did a great job of conveying Lily's sudden regret over letting herself get carried away with Dusty and revealed a pretty girlish naivete in thinking that their relationship was going somewhere. She seemed so genuinely hurt, I just wanted to give her a hug. (And that was before I even saw her chew out that ho-bag Emily on Friday's show.)

I must say, IMO, ATWT is ten times better now than it had been for much of last year.

WILLIAM PETERSEN: Well, this is a shock. The only explanation for this is that somehow in the last year, every one of you tried to act with rubber gloves and tweezers.

Guiding Light
Monday January 7, 2008
Best Supporting Actor
Jordan Clark as Billy Lewis

Billy discovers Bill has been hurt in an explosion. He escapes rehab to visit his son in the hospital.

Jordan Clark did a masterful job of portraying how Billy is so torn between emotions. On one hand he's dissapointed Bill has become such a heartless jerk, but on the other hand he can't deny that he is a big contributing factor to his son's newfound jerk-ness. Great mix of condemnation and guilt.

All My Children
January 7, 2008
Best Supporting Actress - Stacy Haiduk

Hannah goes nuts and shoots Ryan in the head, she was aiming for Kendall but Ryan got away. She then seduces Josh and holds him hostage, continuously taunting him about killing his sister.

To bad there is no guest acting category because Haiduk is scheduled to exit soon but she gave a riveting performance today as Hannah fell of her rocker and is bent on taking Zach to task for abandoning her years ago.

The Young & the Restless
January 8, 2008
Best Actress
Judith Chapman as Gloria Fisher

-Gloria and Jefferey announce their engagement to Michael, Lauren, and Kevin. Michael later pressures Gloria to reveal the true reason behind this proposal, where Gloria comes clean to Bardwell blackmailing her.

I'm mostly not fond of La Chapman, but I thought she did some good work today. The hysterics worked, and I bought her disgust, anger, and despair. Well played.

January 8, 2008
Best Show: One Life to Live
Best Actress: Kathy Brier, as Marcie Walsh

-Marcie holds Viki at gunpoint inside the diner. Nash lashes out at Jessica for posing as Tess to Jared. Roxy accuses Natalie of having feelings for Miles. Rex and Adrianna tell Dorian of their engagement, while Dorian entertains her guest Charlie.

Today's show had a nice balance of drama and humor. The diner scenes were exceptional, watching Marcie descent farther into madness, with Brier delivering a spectacular performance (it's taking me back to Nina Webster holding a gun on Ryan, Y&R). I think this episode could make a nice submission for OLTL. It's entertaining, but not overwrought, and the suspense is heightened throughout the episode.

The Bold & the Beautiful
Best Actress
Jennifer Gareis

-Stephanie urges Donna to let go of Eric, in return for her brother's freedom.

Beautifully controlled and nuanced performance by Gareis. She truly is making her mark in the role of Donna Logan. The strength she gives the character is riveting, as is her scenes opposite Flannery. Gareis continues matching her scene for scene and today was no exception. The last three minutes were absolutely "brava-worthy" as Donna breaks down and seems to give in to Stephanie's demands.

^^^I know I said it before, but its worth repeating: Gareis is amazing on this show and I would really love to see her grab a Supporting Actress nomination in April. Its a pretty crowded field already, so for her to get nominated would probably come as a shock, but she deserves some recognition.

General Hospital

Lead Actress Laura Wright (Carly)
Lead Actress Kelly Monaco (Sam)
Lead Actress Nancy Lee Grahn (Alexis)
Supporting Actress Carolyn Hennessey (Diane)
Supporting Actress Elizabeth Herbst (Elizabeth)

Today, for me at least was ladies day on GH. I am enjoying watching Alexis and Diane battle it out, the chemistry is undeniable. I was for the last two days laughing at them trade barbs, and hope that they get more screen time together because they are great. Sam, throwing that Jason kept a secret from Carly was the bitch Sam that I love, however I don't buy her crying act to Lucky. Could this be a multiple personality in the making. The best scenes on the day for me was Carly confronting Liz. Wow. They traded barbs back and forth, and for the first time I can say I really enjoyed that SMACK Liz got across the face. Laura Wright was fabulous. Her tearfully enterance to see Jason, and ask him Is it tru, are you Jake's father. I truly enjoyed her today. With Liz, blowing the whistle on Sam to Lucky, all hell could break loose, and I cant wait to watch these women continue to rock. Let's just see if other's can get the same respect, Monica, Bobbie, Skye, and yes Tracy.

Days of our Lives
Tuesday, January 8, 2008
Best Actress
Deidre Hall (Dr. Marlena Evans Black)
Best Actor
James Scott (Elvis J. DiMera)

Marlena demands to know what the police are going to do to end the threat Stefano poses to her family, and threatens to handle things herself if he is not arrested soon. Later, she gives Belle some motherly advice regarding her relationship with Shawn and with Phillip.

EJ sneaks into the DiMera mansion and discovers that Stefano's "house guest" is John, who isn't dead after all. Horrified by his father's actions, EJ wants to turn Stefano in, but reconsiders when Stefano threatens to take away all EJ "holds dear." Completely shaken, EJ goes to Sami and tells her that they may all be in a lot of danger.

Hall hit all the right notes here at Marlena was agressive (and a little unhinged) with the cops, curt with Kate, and then later emotional with Belle. The police station scenes were strong and balanced nicely by the scenes later at her apartment.

EJ's reaction to finding John at the DiMera mansion was good, but what sold me on Scott in this episode were the scenes with Sami, where he is shaken to the core by what he's just seen. Scott is great at having EJ realize over the course of these scenes that Stefano really is a sociopath.

On an unrelated note, I'm so glad that the year is starting off well on most shows. There may be hope for the future of soaps yet!

One Life to Live
Best Drama Series
Best Actress
Kathy Brier
Erika Slezak

The town is watching the news as they learn about the situation in Paris, Texas. Many are startled to learn that Viki has been staying in Paris, Texas. Meanwhile back at the dine, the walls continue to close in on Marcie as the cops have surrounded the diner. Marcie tries to cut a deal with John, hoping to take Tommy out of the country. Viki tries to get through the Marcie as she is held hostage.

-Kathy Brier delivered a splendid performance today as Marcie became even more unhinged. The rage in her eyes, sorrow in her voice, and hope that she'll escape with Tommy is riveting to watch. All the right notes are being hit to a T.

-I also love Slezak today, she is doing an excellent job being calm and rationale. Unlike other actors Slezak doesn't try to showboat her co-star, but instead makes her presence known and still does a magnificent job.

-As for the show, it's been an exciting roller coaster. Unlike Todd's execution, this episode is more balanced, better acted, and better put together.

I echo the sentiments about today's OLTL, though I'm not sure it has enough punch for a drama series reel. Let's see how the storyline plays out, because the conclusion of this hostage situation may be even bigger.

What I love, selfishly, as a Kathy Brier fan, is that this storyline spilling into 2008 means that the actress has knockout tapes for two eligibility periods. I personally would be thrilled if she managed to wring two Emmys out of this storyline.

"A movie is not good because it arrives at conclusions you share, or bad because it does not. A movie is not about what it is about. It is about how it is about it: about the way it considers its subject matter, and about how its real subject may be quite different from the one it seems to provide."
- Roger Ebert, from the introduction to "Awake in the Dark" (2006)

And what I love, selfishly, is that it's going to be okay when Kathy loses the Emmy this year to her costar Catherine Hickland. That is because if she submits yesterday and today, she will most likely have the category sewn up next year. I mean both episodes have centered around her.

General Hospital
Laura Wright as Carly Corinthos-Jax
Outstanding Lead Actress

Carly confronts Jason with the fact that he did not tell her that he had a baby with Elizabeth

I really liked Wright in this episode. She really conveyed the hurt of her best friend keeping this from her, but at the same time, I think she showed a little undercurrent of bitterness and jealousy because Carly can't have a baby, and her arch nemesis had one with Jason, who I think Carly has always been in love with, even more than Sonny and Jax.

i thought laura's wednsday was much better than tuesday. i felt lw held back in tuesday and didnt get outwardly emotional. lw does this one thing where she has this silent held back dismayed reaction sometimes and i dont find that emmy worthy. this is probably also for wednsday the best i have ever seen from wright.

i also was blown away by storms friday! wow! i did not see that coming or ever see her act like that.

right now, oltl's kathy brier is the 2008-09 front-runner of all performers.

Lead Actress
Erika Slezak
Viki Davidson-OLTL

I haven't mentioned her all week because I wanted to wait and see this through. I have enjoyed a legend like Slezak, interact with, in my opinion a future superstar. She has been great. I truly enjoyed watching her emotions, and her distress. A great week for Slezak.

Supporting Actress
Kathy Briar
Marcie McBain-OLTL

I enjoyed Briar today, especially the end when she, baby Tommy, and Micheal gathered together, for probably the last time. I just hope that Briar gets more story like this as the year goes on. I am concerned as to what will happen to her, will she go to jail?

Supporting Actress
Carolyn Hennessey
Diane Miller-GH

Today, we saw a glimpse of who Diane is. She touched me telling how she felt responsible for a man's death, the job her father did raising her, before he died of cancer. It's time they address her past, and dig into what makes Diane who she is. I am hoping that she and Nancy Lee Grahn get so much more screen time together because they rock.

Supporting Actress
Rebecca Herbst
Elizabeth Webber-GH

I loved Herbst today, and yesterday. She telling Sam, and Carly off, was priceless. I just hope that we see more of the bitch Liz, rather than the baby Liz. I enjoy watching Liz like this. She has amazing chemistry with Kelly Monaco, and Laura Wright, and the three of them could have quite a cat fight.

Lead Actress
Laura Wright
Carly Corinthos-Jax

Wright has been on fire all week. She finally has some great material to work with. Her range of emotions has really impressed me, because I wasn't sure she was capable of making Carly her own, but she has proved me wrong this week.
