I've updated the list of Emmy Submissions suggested by we brilliant gurus here on the The Envelope/Goldderby Forums!

I must say, this years list is far less extensive than years previous. I know we all still tune in (because we're gluttons for punishments at the point), but the quality has hit new lows in the soap opera genre. It shows in the Nielsen's and it shows in the contributions to this thread. It should be much easier to pick two tapes this year since so few actors have more than a handful to pick from.

Well, I'm happy to say that after watching this past week's shows, I found some things I thought were worth posting here:

Days of our Lives
Best Supporting Actress
Peggy McKay - Caroline Brady

Wednesday, October 1 and Thursday, October 2, 2008

On Wednesday, Caroline talks to Bo and Victor about her predicament and tries to convince the two mavericks to trust the justice system instead of taking matters into their own hands. Later, the DA decides to try Caroline for murder. On Thursday, Caroline recounts her last encounter with Trent before his murder and realizes that the case against her is a strong one.

McKay did a great job in both these episodes. The first is more subtle, as Caroline is obviously trying to hide her fear about being sent to prison while trying to convince her loved ones that everything will be alright. The second tape is much more emotional as Caroline is full of fear and anger.

and

Days of our Lives
Best Supporting Actress
Arianne Zucker - Nicole Walker

Friday, October 3, 2008

Nicole is devastated after EJ leaves her to check on Sami. She tells John how foolish she's been for thinking that she and EJ could live happily ever after, and John cheers her up by taking her out for a drink.

It's amazing to me how much Zucker's improved as an actress since she first started the show. She works the emotional material very well, and the episode shows quite a range from her.

Days Of Our lives

Outstanding (lead) or (supporting) actress

Renee Jones- Lexie Carver

october 10th, 2008

Delivered a perfect performance of how upset a mother generally is and should be at the thought of losing her young child. Anger at the sitter, fear and just worry about where her son was. truly a classic Renee Jones performance. she's great.

Little late posting this, but..

Guiding Light, October 7
Best Supporting Actress
Gina Tognoni

I really liked Tognoni in her scenes today, listening to Bill downplay her importance to he mother, then Dinah venting to Grady and Vanessa about how hard she's worked to get Bill to where he is. She was then very effective talking to her father's picture about her being misunderstood. Tognoni is always effective showing her range and this episode was a good example of that for her.

rrussaw, agreed. I forgot I wanted to cite that performance.

This is pulling at strings here because there is so little "Emmy worthy" stuff out there this year, but:

GUIDING LIGHT
Oct. 13, 2008
Lead Actress-Crystal Chappell (Olivia)

Olivia is taken to the hospital by Natalia where Rick informs her that her body may be rejecting her heart. Upon being given the news, she berates her new "best friend" Natalia for only caring because she only cares about Gus' heart, not because it's in her. Liv admits to Rick she is scared and ready to take the tests as she realizes she needs to take care of Emma, she realizes that Natalia already has that taken care of.

Call me stupid, but this blatant and desperate attempt to create buzz with a "lesbian romance" actually is being told better than any other romance GL has told in a long while.

Days of our Lives
Best Actress
Alison Sweeney - Sami Brady

Sami continues to lean on Lucas for help dealing with her pregnancy and keeping it a secret from EJ. EJ comes to talk to Sami about Nicole's pregnancy, and she pushes him to make a commitment to her. Once EJ leaves, Sami becomes visibly upset.

This is kind of an unconventional episode choice, and doesn't really have any big scenes. But I think this might make a nice contrast to most of Sweeney's other work, which is usually strong and obvious. Here, Sweeney had to be subtle, and did a great job conveying the pain Sami felt telling EJ that he should be with Nicole. That Sweeeny continues to wring sympathy from Sami's disastrous choices is kind of amazing.

All My Children (ABC)

Outstanding Drama Series
Outstanding Drama Series Directing Team
Outstanding Drama Series Writing Team

The tornado finally hits Pine Valley leaving various characters in peril.

Today proved to me that the best is yet to come from this storyline. I thought the whole blue screen thing was going to be cheesy, but I bought it. For me it felt like all this was going on outside. This storyline should rightfully take the place of GH when it comes to being the sweep stunt that is nominated and win an Emmy. And to add, Amanda Baker is breaking my heart as Babe. The scenes where she’s under the rumble, I finally bought her as Babe.

days of our lives

supporting actress
nadia bjorlin(chloe)

this week and yesterday is probably the best i have seen out of her since she returned. finding out about sami's pregnancy and going off on lucas brought out some very intense acting she hasnt shown all year or since returning. not as stiff-noted as recent performances ane not the overinhaling performances like the claustrophobic stuff. still, she isnt win worthy and probably wont get a nod.

All My Children (ABC)

Outstanding Drama Series
Outstanding Drama Series Directing Team
Outstanding Drama Series Writing Team

Outstanding Supporting Actor In A Drama Series
Jacob Young (JR Chandler)
Outstanding Supporting Actress In A Drama Series
Amanda Baker (Babe Carey) & Bobbie Eakes (Krystal Martin)

Kendall fights for her life. Bianca reveals to Zach that he’s the father. JR makes a difficult decision.

I thought today was really good. All the characters are dealing w/the aftermath of the 1st tornado. The highlight was the scenes w/Baker, Eakes, and Young. All of them coming together as a family to deal w/the inevitable (Babe’s death) and the scene that literally gave me chills was the scenes of Babe telling Little Adam that she will always be there. OMG.

The Young & the Restless
Best Actress, Jeanne Cooper

I forgot to mentioned this when it first aired, but I thought Cooper played her scenes well today, with Amber and especially Jill. It was heartbreaking listening to Katherine tell Jill that she realizes she's getting older and then seeing her walk up the stairs in slow fashion, it was well-done.

AS THE WORLD TURNS
Julie Pinson (Janet) - Sup. Actress

Julie Pinson turned in a great performance both days as the wounded yet defiant Janet. These mature scenes between Janet and Carly were some of the deepest and most penetrating that have been written in quite some time on ATWT.

All My Children (ABC)

Outstanding Supporting Actress In A Drama Series
Amanda Baker (Babe Carey) & Bobbie Eakes (Krystal Martin)
Outstanding Drama Series Writing Team

The writing today was solid. Loved the scene w/Opal saying that she also lost a daughter too when Krystal was yelling at her. The scenes w/Babe and Krystal at Babe’s bedside were heartbreaking and subtle work from Eakes (I would say better than the stuff last yr. when Babe “died”). Baker keeps on bringing it in her final episodes and I can’t wait for her final episode.

OMG. Classic soap today. Paternity reavels, natural disaster, and a death of a heroine. Amanda Baker has been the star of this storyline and now I can officially call her Babe#2. If everything was fair she would get a Emmy nomination b/c she’s been that good. Bobbie Eakes and Jacob Young found Emmy gold w/today’s episode and if they can bring it for this, I can only imagine what the aftermath of Babe’s death will provide for them. Chuck Pratt has made his mark on AMC, IMO, and I think what he does now, good or bad, we have finally washed our hairs out of McTavish and Harmon Brown & Esensten writing and I am enjoying it.

Alley Mills "The Bold and the Beautiful"
Thurs Oct 23,2008
Outstanding Supporting Actress

Outstanding Drama Series
Outstanding Writing
Outstanding Directing
"The Bold and the Beautiful"

Not since Storm's suicide eppys has B&B put out a showstopper of an episode.

Rick falling off the Sky Lounge after his fight with Ridge, Donna's frantic behavior over Pam's reign of terror and then Pam's emotional meltdown (and possible death) as she confronts Stephanie and Eric.

Alley Mills brought down the house today and she
commanded the screen and actually took control of her scenes with Susan Flannery and John McCook.

Finally seeing Pam confess to Stef about all of her evil doings, all as a result of wanting to protect her sister, was the performance of her career.

Mills has to be on the Supporting Actress list with Tom next year. She left me breathless.

The show was on fire with the writing and directing, too. That dialogue between Pam and Stephanie was superb.

Great supporting work from Flannery and McCook, as well.

I agree about B&B. I thought that was great stunt work with Rick falling off the sky lounge.

WILLIAM PETERSEN: Well, this is a shock. The only explanation for this is that somehow in the last year, every one of you tried to act with rubber gloves and tweezers.

Outstanding Younger Actress In A Drama Series
Farah Fath as Gigi Morasco, One Life to Live (ABC)

Rex wakes up from his coma.

OMG. Are pigs flying. I actually thought Farah did a great job today. It was the first time since she came on that I think she has brought it. She and John-Paul are magic. Having Rex wake up to his true love was classic soap.

The Young and the Restless

Best Writing
Best Lead Actress-Jeanne Cooper as Katherine Chancellor
Best Supporting Actress-Judith Chapman as Gloria Bardwell

Gloria confuses a fragile Katherine

I know this is late but I thought this episode was exceptional. The thing that made it really pop was Gloria manipulating and confusing Katherine. I loved how Gloria circled her prey and Jeanne's reactions were priceless.

^^^I agree, but I'd also cite Judith Chapman, who I found was just deliciously duplicitous as well. And the musical score for those scenes, were just brilliant!

What luck for rulers that men do not think.
