The Antonio/Gabi/Richardo triangle was my favourite on Sunset. You also had Carmen and Maria in the mix.
I don't think I've been as invested in another story the way I was with those two.
Sunset Beach went downhill after Reilly took over with the supernatural stuff - but the production values on the show from Day 1 was superb. An embarrassment of rich location scenes, etc.
I can offer nothing in this thread except I really, really wish SoapNet would add "Santa Barbara" and "Loving/The City." I wanna see SB because it has so many people I love on it (Grahn, MATTSON, Walker, etc.) and "Loving/The City" for Catherine Hickland.
Yet this probably won't happen because for some reason Soap Net is all about pimping primetime soaps. They can't even let vintage daytime shine on its own network!
I still miss Santa Barbara. No other soap in history combined heartwrenching drama and hilarious comedy the way it did. I remember looking forward to coming home and watching it. No soap on the air today makes me feel that way, although OLTL used to in the early-mid nineties. I also enjoyed Another World and, to an extent, Sunset Beach. They just don't make 'em like they used to.

I feel like i was born into the wrong generation because for whatever reason i missed "Santa Barbara" and "Another World" and these seem to be the two soaps that people miss the most and/or talk about the most.
I only ever saw a few episodes from the last year or so of "Another World" (mostly because i tuned into see Lisa Peluso, who i loved on "Loving") and i recall at the time my favorite characters were Lila (Lisa Peluso) and a character i believe that was a black female cop who was raped or sexually molested and i believe it was played by a woman named Rhoda Ross Henricks (or Kendrick); i can't recall, i just remember being so happy when she was nodded for a daytime emmy award.
I do recall watching "Sunset Beach", initally because it was an Aaron Spelling show and i was a mega-fan of 90210 and Melrose Place and he was my idol so i watched to see his take on daytime television. I liked the inital concept but it never captivated me the way it should have and i lost interest quickly; only tuning into special events like the earthquake episode and when stories would get a lot of positive attention. I recall that i adored Sarah Buxton on the show as Annie and that i was in love with Eddie Cibrian and Randy Spelling at the time. and i have fond memories of watching Susan Ward try to act and of Lesley Anne Down being particularly fun to watch as Olivia.
Congrats to Kathy Griffin on her second consecutive emmy win!

I loved Generations and also Santa Barbara. Kelly Rutherford And Kristoff ST JOhn were amazing and to see where they went to from Generations. Cruz and Eden for SB all the way. Laos how many times did they recast Kelly

I agree about Kelly Rutherford. She is amazing and I'm glad she's doing so well on Gossip Girls today. Also loved her on Kindred: The Embraced and Melrose Place.
"Santa Barbara" was the best soap opera that I ever watched. The cast was an embarrasment of riches that no other daytime serial has ever been able to duplicate. Just a few couples that sorely deserved shout outs are Robin Mattson(Gina) and Justin Deas(Keith); Jed Allen(CC) and Judith McConnell(Sophia); Louise Sorel(Augusta)and Nicholas Coster(Lionel); in addition to the already mentioned A Martinez(Cruz) and Marcy Walker(Eden)and Nancy Grahn(Julia)along with the BEST Mason Lane Davies were all reasons enough to watch. Even when the stories were crazy -Gina stealing Capwell sperm to have a baby and delivering it in a veterinarian's office on Christmas Eve was IT for me- the high caliber acting, the lush sets, the whip-smart writing, and fantastic directing kept me tuned in every day that "Santa Barbara" aired. From what I understand the creators, Bridget and Jerome Dobson, have not sold rights to air "Santa Barbara" in America again. This is a shame for if anyone anywhere cared about the art of the daytime serial this show would be aired nonstop until today's soap operas got the message and upped their game to try and compare to the late, great "Santa Barbara".

Listening to the Memorable Stories podcast on Daytime Confidential actually made me really miss Another World. I was a fan of Sunset Beach and Santa Barbara as well, but I felt really sad when AW first became a huge mess and then got canceled. I loved Amy Carlson and Timothy Gibbs as Gary and Josie, and Lisa Peluso's Lila was so much fun!
I'm probably in the minority but I really did love Port Charles BEFORE it turned into a telenovela and the whole vampire thing, unfortunetly that's when it got all the buzz and Emmy noms....
I liked the original 7 interns and loved the character of Courtney Kanelos...she was like a younger Lindsey Rappaport...too bad they didn't move those characters to GH (although I consider GH: NS basically the new "Port Charles".)

i agree with you... before it became a vampire laden mess i loved "Port Charles". Most espeically the first 4 years of the show when it was about the hospital and interns and Lucy and Kevin were front and center. I thought that Nolan North was superb as Chris Ramsey and felt that they had created a multi-layered and complex villian that could have easily moved over to "GH" and been a valuable member of the cast... he would have had chemistry with Rebecca Herbst, Kimberly McCoullagh, Laura Wright, Jane Elliot to name a few.
My favorite PC characters were Lucy, Kevin, Chris, Eve and Karen. I still regret that they made the stupid choice to kill Karen off instead of simply allowing her to return to "GH" with Scott. I recall being stunned when they killed of Eve Lambert; who at the time was becoming the main character on the show. I still feel that the original "Port Charles" series premire episodes were among the best soap opera episodes of the decade. I believe there was a primetime movie that started it and than it continued the following monday or something in daytime. Lynn Herring was excellent as Scotty blamed Lucy for Serena's kidnapping. It was a great episode.
Congrats to Kathy Griffin on her second consecutive emmy win!

I really liked Port Charles its first few years. The General Homicide storyline was one of the best serial killer storylines ever done on any soap, IMHO. I even liked the first couple of vampire/supernatural arcs, but then it just got to be too much and I tuned out. By the time it was canceled in 2003, I was barely watching.
I still never understand why they didn't integrate Lucy and Kevin back into the GH cast somehow. Its another case of Phelps/Guza/Frons refusing to listen to what the fans want. Whenever you ask longtime GH fans which characters they want back on the canvas, Lynn Herring as Lucy is always at or near the top. Of course, given the current state of GH, its probably best she stay away. I still can't fathom why another show hasn't picked her up, unless she's not interested in returning to acting.
There are a ton of old school Lucy Coe clips on YouTube from the late 80's-mid 90's. Herring turned in Emmy-worthy work on a regular basis during that time period.

I loved Santa Barbara and I agree that no other soap combined superb acting with high drama and comedy. It was brilliant.
But with that said, nothing will ever compare to Another World. It was so rich in characters and history. NBC made a huge mistake when they cancelled that show. It should still be on the air today.
I was the biggest supporter of "Port Charles" during its last few years, though I admit the show lost its way in its last year. Michael Easton's Caleb was one of this decade's great villains, and the Alison/Livvie rivalry is the only one that I think could have grown to the heights of OLTL's Viki and Dorian, or AMC's Erica and Brooke. Those characters were two of the best in daytime, and the Emmy-nominated performances of Erin Hershey Presley and Kelly Monaco were sensational. The "Surrender" premiere remains one of the best hours of soap opera I've ever seen.
"A movie is not good because it arrives at conclusions you share, or bad because it does not. A movie is not about what it is about. It is about how it is about it: about the way it considers its subject matter, and about how its real subject may be quite different from the one it seems to provide." - Roger Ebert, from the introduction to "Awake in the Dark" (2006)
I'm gonna throw out some Ryans Hope love. i missed it on its first go-round but I am currently watching it on Soapnet. It is absolutely my favorite hour of soaps everyday. I record it (why the hell cant SN air it at a decent hour?) and I always watch it before any of the current shows.
Ilene Kristen is fantastic as Dee, Justin Deas as Bucky you cant help but love him, Ron Hale as Roger before he was relegated to punching bag on GH, Earl Hindman as Bob (ok I still want to hear him say hi-ho neighbor lol). Helen Gallagher and Bernie Barrow were a perfect match.
I am kinda bummed though because as I understand it they dont air the entire series of RH on SN. So I wont get to see how it ended but I am enjoying the ride with the show more than I have with any current soap in a long time.

I feel like we're the same person, because I never got to watch Santa Barbara and didn't get into Another World until it was on its last legs because I was a fan of Lisa Pelusu on Loving too. My dad was into GH because of the adventure aspect of it when I was growing up, so I mostly just watched GH and then later the rest of the ABC soaps. Whenever I would go to a friends house or somewhere else in the afternoon, it seemed like there was only CBS soaps on, so eventually I got to know all the CBS soaps too. Then, when I was in high school, two friends introduced me to Days of Our Lives because of the whole Carly being buried storyline. We were glued to the tv for weeks waiting to see if she would make it or not. (See teens don't necessarily need teen storylines to follow.) I didn't get into the other NBC soaps until I was at college though when Sunset Beach premiered, so I had already missed Santa Barbara and most of Another World's run by that time.
It's too bad I never got to see the best of AW because I did like the characters I saw on there (Cass, Lila, Vicky, Grant, Paulina), but unfortunately just as it is now for most soaps, the writing wasn't that great at that time. Sunset Beach seemed to be like the opposite of AW in that most of the actors except a few weren't that great except for Lesley Annne Down, Sarah Buxton, and some others I can't remember now, but the storylines were really good when they did their big event storylines that it was worth watching even if Randy Spelling was supposed to be a hot guy that iirc a female character actually went crazy over.
