"A movie is not good because it arrives at conclusions you share, or bad because it does not. A movie is not about what it is about. I think we should definetly use pre-nominees, nominees for both the emmys and the goldies to come up with a list. I also think we should have some sort of period were posters suggest people they think did good work this decade.
As for category placement, i think the best thing to do is this--- if someone was nominated in both Younger and Supporting they should be considered for whichever year resulted in them winning, if they have never won, they should be placed in whichever category their most recent nomination was in.
For example, Cady McClain has won in both younger and supporting (1990, Juvinile Female performer and 2004 supporting actress) so she would be considered in our awards as a Supporting performer since that is her most recent nomination.
does that make sense to everyone?
I think it's the only fair way to do it.
I also think anybody that's considered a legacy like Susan Lucci, Jeanne Cooper, etc should be automatically considered for a lead category because despite some periodic lapse of storyline they have most usually been lead characters on their shows.
Does this work for everyone?

and i can't recall what year the soap opera digest awards ended but maybe we should consider those nominees too, they may not always be our favorites but they could provide information as to who did what in what years... i know that IMDB has a list of those awards here:
Cady McClain would definitely be considered supporting or lead rather than younger, because she was never a younger actor in the 2000s. I'm speaking strictly of the actors who were both younger and older during the period from 2000 to 2009.
Thanks Boidiva for the idea about using the Dankies and the Soap Digest Awards. I definitely will. And also Nelson's Soap Opera Spirit Awards, though they only go back a couple of years.

This is a great and greatly challenging idea, 742. The suggestions for where to get names have been good. Might I also suggest we use the top five or so most cited actors per category from the Emmy performances thread for the years we have that? Too many names could result in chaos, but since the Daytime Emmys are such a poor base from which to start, I think it's kind of necessary.
Regarding category placements: how tough! For lead versus supporting, I would tend to go with whichever category into which they were most frequently placed? I do agree with Boidiva that legacies like Susan Lucci, Jeanne Cooper, Erika Slezak, Tony Geary, etc. should automatically be in the lead categories, though I guess since that's where they always place themselves, that's where my system would place them anyway.
I would suggest we not do a guest acting category, but that guest actor nominees be included if they were ever a regular on a show during the decade, like Renee Jones or Phil Carey.
For younger categories, I don't think there's really any fair way to judge it. I think if a performer was considered younger for more than half their time on a show during this decade, they should be considered younger, unless their inclusion on the list only stems from work they did after they were too old to compete in younger. Eden Riegel and Van Hansis, for example, I would definitely place in the younger category. Michael Graziadei I would put in supporting.
There will definitely be a category for best storyline. How to work that out might be a little tougher. If I establish an open vote, I might get some people citing big storylines (i.e. OLTL's Spencer Truman saga), while other people cite sub-storylines within the larger arc (i.e. Lindsay kills Spencer). As I make my list of eligible actors, I might consider some of the specific storylines they were nominated for or were involved in and create a master list from that. For instance, Kathy Brier won a Goldie Award and was nominated the previous year in large part for the storyline where she goes on the run with Tommy and holds Viki hostage. I would then add that storyline to the list. Another issue to sort out as time goes by.
To answer your other question, YoungRestlessOne, it would indeed be a Best Show of the Decade award. That's tough, for sure, because even the best soaps in the last ten years have had deep lows to match their highs (Y&R's roller coaster of Jack Smith to Lynn Marie Latham to Maria Bell; ATWT's great five years under Hogan Sheffer, and then an increasingly abysmal five years under Jean Passanante). But I don't think it'll be too difficult to consider what shows have the best ratio of good to bad, and which shows' highs were the highest.
I will also include a head-writer of the decade award, which will consider each head writer's achievements separately and not lumped in with his or her show. For instance, Jack Smith could be nominated against Maria Arena Bell, and not lumped together as writers for Y&R.

I am really all for it, because this will probably be the ONLY time we'll be able to do this, because let's face it, will there be any soap operas on the air 10 years from now?

I've just started cobbling a masterlist from the Soap Opera Digest Awards (dug up everything, including Best Villain and the like) and the Daytime Emmy nominees and prenominees. It's going to need some work and discussion. Some people who have vacillated between lead and supporting, some people who were younger actors but did a lot of their best work at 26 and older -- I've made tentative judgment calls.
Anyway, I've been going over the lists and discovered something shocking: Y&R's Jess Walton has never been pre-nominated for an Emmy by her cast! Wow! Even unpopular actors like Eric Braeden and Trevor St. John have been pre-nominated at least once.

I think we should do something like a yay or nay for the category placements based on storyline.
Let's take for example Crystal Chappell. She won supporting Actress in 02, but since then she has b/c one of the Leading ladies of GL. The same can be kinda reverse for Gina Tognoni. There's time she was a Lead (she was nominated for our awards for Lead Actress for the storyline that got her second Emmy in the Supporting category).
I guess I am rambling now, but my pt. is that we should take their storyline into consideration and then go from there.

Y&R has had so many strong actresses that it's not that surprising that Jess Walton hasn't gotten prenommed, though I'd think that in, what, six years, she would have made it in at least once.
Jess Walton has been nominated for 3 Goldie Awards in six years. So whatever her costars were thinking, we at GoldDerby thought she was worthy of making the cut. Very, very strange when you consider some of the actors that make the cut that Jess Walton has not been nominated or pre-nominated for an Emmy this decade, and hasn't even been up for a Soap Opera Digest Award. Yet Vail Bloom and Tammin Sursok are Emmy nominees and Amelia Heinle and Darcy Rose Byrnes have been pre-nominated. Go figure.

I've populated tentative lists for the acting races, and they seem more or less comprehensive, though for the sake of fairness I think we should add some actors who came to prominence in 2009, since they weren't present in previous award races. People like Y&R's Stacy Haiduk, OLTL's Scott Evans and Brett Claywell, GH's Drew Garrett, etc.
As for category placement, I'm going to use my best judgment. For the record, my criterion for being a lead actor is not that he or she was front-and-center for the entire decade, or even most of the decade. If an actor was prominent enough to be considered a lead actor at by the Daytime Emmys, Emmy pre-nominations, and/or the Goldie Awards, I put them in the lead race. For instance, OLTL's Susan Haskell won an Emmy and Goldie Award this year as a lead actress on OLTL, so even though she wasn't on the show for most of the decade, she's going in lead. If I don't do it this way, the supporting categories will be full beyond reason, and the only people left to nominate for lead will be people like Alicia Minshew and Maurice Benard, and I don't think anybody wants that.
There will be room for discussion (actors like DAYS's Renee Jones have gotten nominations and pre-nominations everywhere from lead to guest this decade, so she's sort of up in the air), but ultimately I'll be making a lot of executive decisions, or else the process of just discussing the finalists will take months, and I want to get this off the ground by October.
The Head Writer of the Decade category is giving me some concern. I've populated a list of all head-writers from the decade, but there's a problem of overlap. Some writers share the reins with another writer then go solo (Jean Passanante, who co-wrote ATWT with Hogan Sheffer and no goes it alone). And some head writers have tenures of mere months, which I think should disqualify them from consideration. That's the category where I will welcome the most input. Should we vote for the period (i.e. make Passanante separately eligible for her solo tenure and for her work with Sheffer), or try to single out each writer's contributions (i.e. consider Passanante and Sheffer separately despite their collaborations)? I think the first option will be simpler.
I still need to populate lists for game shows and talk shows. Those should be fairly simple.
Finally, I'm ruling MTV's "Spyder Games" and SoapNet's "GH: Night Shift" eligible for drama series consideration.
My sources for finalists were the Daytime Emmy nominations and pre-nominations from 2001-present (the 2001 awards covered 2000, our first eligibility year), the Goldie Award nominations and pre-nominations from 2004-present, the Soap Opera Spirit Awards from 2008-present, and whatever Soap Opera Digest nominations I could compile from IMDb since 2001. If anyone has any other suggestions for places from which to add finalists, let me know.
I'll post the tentative list of acting finalists soon.

^^^Looking at that list (just off the bat), daytime seems to be lacking in charismatic lead actors IMHO.
I can safely say PASS, PC, GH, GH: NS, and B&B are out of it (although I really like Ben Masters, and David Bailey (RIP) was brilliant in the role for that short time).
On an aside and not trying to persuade, but lol, if a Thorsten Kaye performance were to be recognize I would rather it be for Ian on PC than his show eating Zach on AMC (which is thankfully coming to an end).
