I'm still behind on my soap watching having been in LA all of September so my reactions are a little tardy. I'm liking him and Tricia Cast these days. Also, a little encouragement can only help an actor grow. He's trying.
I understand your logic, Nel, but i say Maria Bell and staff need your encouragement more. That show is on another post-Latham downward spiral.
And let's face it, Y&R has no plans on doing a gay story, so they may as well just send Phillip back to Australia. Had the show followed through with its promise to do a gay storyline, perhaps i would have been able to see Bierdz improve as an actor, but thusfar, i find him very stiff and lifeless.
Nel, on a separate note...i would love for you to interview Beth Maitland. Has she not been the only saving grace these last few weeks??? Let's all start the Emmy campaigning not for her.
I haven't put Y&R in my top three in a while. I'm behind so I don't feel like I can blast the show until I watch all this crap in its entirety. It'll happen soon.
the Y&R hatred is just overkill. If one more person on one of these sites bitches about "plot-driven stories" and throws the phrase around like they came up with it I'm going to throw my computer out the window. - Ashley Abbots had her fake baby and her strength came back and I couldn't be more thrilled. - Doug Davidson has a heart of gold and has never been better - we've been treated to 2 fantastic returns and performances this year from Tricia Cast and Beth Maitland
and Maria has smartly planted some seeds that i trust we will see the pay-off for - there is more to sharons story and her history - Canes history in Australia - Philip has told Chance and Nina twice now that he isn't leaving yet - Katherine has a real daughter SOMEWHERE (Nikki or Gloria - Nikki or Gloria?!?!) - Ryders mom?!?!?! - and i have a feeling at some point soon Michelle Stafford is going to get something real great and new to play - fingers crossed
getting off my SOAP-box. but someone needed to pimp out the goods for this show after all the hate thats been going on. its NOT perfect - but i still love it.

There is no shame in Rebecca saying that I need a job, b/c she knows for damn well that they are going to do the same thing w/the character this time around.
Cosign w/your top 10 reasons to watch Days!
Carolyn Hennesy is loved!
Why is that Kitty's E! True Hollywood story is more entertaining than what I am watching on Y&R? Look I am not one to say I hate/find Y&R unwatchable. I am bored, but the actors make up for that. I see this show now more as an actors showcase than strong writing.
That Denise Vasi better stay your number 1 Hair Model as long as she is on that show. I will say she look like she had promise when she debut, but OMG she is horrid to watch.

I'm really enjoying all of the industry love for "Days" at the moment. It truly is experiencing a creative spike ... glad to see that the ratings are reflecting this. I'm watching daily again.
If you've stopped watching "Days," I really encourage you to check it out again.
Top 10 Reasons I Watch (In No Particular Order): 1. Nicole's Baby Switch Scheme Unraveling 2. Crystal Chappel's Return 3. Stefano & Kate Dimera 4. The Carly/Lawrence Mystery 5. Louise Sorel's Impending Return 6. Realistic Relationship Turmoil for Bo & Hope 7. Nathan & Melanie's Budding Romance 8. Great Veteran/Younger Cast Interaction 9. The Mysterious Pasts of Ari & Rafe 10. Will Brady & Nicole Rekindle Their Romance?
Wow, I love both Nelson's and BradyPubBoy's top ten reasons for watching, which cover most of my own. DAYS has been so good lately, I'm glad it's getting a lot of praise for it.
Also, I agree that Thom Bierdz was better the last time I saw him on, which was an episode from a few weeks ago. (I'm behind on my Y&R.)
James, good for you for defending the show you love. I don't think anyone's saying the show doesn't have untapped potential at the moment or that the show isn't turning out good acting performances. But we don't need to use the phrase "plot driven" to say that the stories on this show are not only hijacking characters to get from one plot point to another but also failing to make logical sense half the time for the sake of the writing. It's frustrating watching characters you've come to care about behaving so ridiculously or being so dismantled for the sake of a story that you lose interest. This board loves Y&R. We all know if could be so much better than it is now, and that's what everyone wants.
Y&R deserves to be bashed and bashed some more. Memo to Y&R “creatives” – it doesn’t say much about you when even you all agree that a stuffed kitten is the most interesting part of your increasingly inane show. Of all the shows for Y&R to ape, Passion should not be the one.
DAYS definitely has the hottest men in daytime. No show can touch them.
OLTL's uncertain fate is disheartening. This show is not perfect but there is so much that is good about OLTL and so much that is bad about AMC & GH, that it’s just plain wrong that OLTL continues to be the red-headed step-child of ABC. I am not a big fan of John & Natalie, but if the increased interaction between the two leads to some fans returning than I’m all for it. I do wish though that the Kish storyline had progressed more slowly as well as the Blair/Todd/Tea/Ross story. TnT were married for a day before they broke up. Why must everything happen so darn fast? DAYS probably has the best pacing of any soap right now. Culliton & Higley (is she more than a figurehead?) understand the power of anticipation and secrets.
bricole happening again after the fan disapproval the last time means higley is writing part of this show and not just sitting there and going along with tomlin and whitesell.

WELL SAID!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
James you are say right about everything you mentioned. Yes the writing may have been a bit uneven at times during this past year but in recent weeks Y&R has really laid the solid groudwork for a lot of interesting storylines to come.
AS I stated previously I LOVE how they worked out the Mary Jane/Patty storyline. So often in Y&R's history we see these type of psychotic driven characters appear in Genoa City - messes with some of the residents lives, then there is the final pay off and then everything is quickly resolved.
Mary Jane/Patti on the other hand has left a HUGE scar on a lot of the lives of the people she impacted and I am happy to see that the writers did not used the character just to wreak havoc for a while, then once she is captured everything goes back to be a-okay once again.
Mary Jane/Patti is in the nut-house but her presence is still every where in Genoa City these days by all the damage she has done.
And now it seems like there is still a lot more to come with this Mary Jane/Patti storyline giving the ending of Tuesday's episode. Can't wait for that and everything else you mentioned in your post. 2010 might just be a bang-on year for Y&R if they handled these storylines with the necessary care and promise they behold.

Agree, Y&R is completely absurd these days, and it needs to be called out for doing the same crap other soaps pass off as "soap." Y&R used to be distinct from the pack, now, it no longer stands out and it as bad as all the other soaps.
Did we really need another doppelganger on this show? The biggest problem with Y&R is that it treats its audience as if they are very stupid. While soaps have always had some bizzare stuff happen, Y&R requires one to suspend too much disbelief these days.
Also, problems that started off small have gotten increasingly huge. Need we mention the writing for minorities and women on this show and how disgusting it has been? Look at how ridiculous this stupid baby switch story was executed. Again, the show thinks its audience is stupid and will accept anything. Did we really need a core character to die? What purpose did Brad's death serve? There was no fallout, and Colleen's will probably be the same way too.
The balance is also off on this show, not just in terms of cast use, but almost everything has to be depressing these days.

So Tuc Watkins is hung. Great! That makes him even more drool worthy.
I love Cougar Town and Hennesey is great in it!
I can't join the Y&R commenting since I dropped the show.
I agree on Owen and Steffy being worst couple. I only read the spoilers yet even thru that, they're annoying. And the few minute clips on youtube with them are completely chemistry absent. As much as I didn't like Jackie/Owen, they're much better than Steffy/Owen.
And Brad has destroyed Owen. He was mysterious and the audience didn't know if he really wanted Jackie's money. Now he's a "traditional" guy who disapproved of jackie's prostitute past, when he slept with jackie for the monetary perks!
Watching OLTL today, I just had to come in here and make a comment.
Nelson, can you please comment on the Blair/Todd/Tea situation on OLTL? It's something that makes a lot of us angry, yet after rightly eviscerating the rapemance last year you're calling this daytime's number one triangle to watch -- one in which two otherwise strong, intelligent women are made to fight over a remorseless sexual predator; one in which that sexual predator is put in a position to express disgust at Tea's behavior; one in which Blair refuses to tell Todd he's the father of Tea's child, because she doesn't want Tea in their lives and not because Todd's crimes against children make him an unfit parent.
You're on a campaign to save OLTL, but these two things go hand in hand. If we're going to save OLTL, we need them to stop alienating viewers with this storyline. Every scene with those three characters has a disgusting subtext, and none of the characters say what everyone in the audience is thinking: Why are they fighting over a double rapist!? Why do they apologize to him for keeping secrets or trying to take his children away!? Why are they seeking his approval!? Why doesn't he make their stomachs turn!?
In the interest of saving my favorite soap opera, they need to, pardon my French, knock it the f*ck off! If they want to keep Todd on the show, fine -- Trevor St. John is a good actor. But then write him like the nasty, cowardly little sex criminal he is instead of making women swoon over him. On a show that otherwise makes me very happy these days, this storyline makes my skin crawl. It might be the worst thing on any soap opera right now; Florencia Lozano and Kassie DePaiva have been so good these last couple of months and deserve so much better than to be degraded this way.
"A movie is not good because it arrives at conclusions you share, or bad because it does not. A movie is not about what it is about. It is about how it is about it: about the way it considers its subject matter, and about how its real subject may be quite different from the one it seems to provide." - Roger Ebert, from the introduction to "Awake in the Dark" (2006)
742, it'll come as no surprise that I completely agree. I'd go a step further and say that Todd needs to go. They need to kill of the character and tell a good murder mystery. That would be a story involving a lot of characters and it would bring back those people who were disgusted by the reraping/rapemance.

It seems to me that the show -- and likely Brian Frons -- is unwilling to part with Todd Manning, which is why I can live with the compromise of keeping him on the show, but writing him as the monster he is. Make him a villain -- and not a villain for five minutes, who terrorizes women and children and is juggling women two months later. He's Mitch Laurence. He's Victor Lord. No one would dream of writing those creatures as romantic leads. So why is Todd made into a Lothario?
Banish Todd from the affections of women, because it's hateful of women to think they would want him -- today he said to Marty, "What kind of psychiatrist are you!" and made me want to vomit. Then start a romantic quadrangle with Blair, Ross, Tea, and Eli, because those four would make for awesome storylines, and the sexual tension is already there.

I am too not a fan of the Tea/Todd/Blair debacle of a triangle. I will add that I do like Todd & Tea together, but I don't get why Blair would still want this guy and why the writers are making Todd out to be this victim. If anything they should've made him at least understanding of where Tea is coming from. This guy has done bad things. I think Todd is needed on the show, but not as the romantic lead which these strong women scream and catfight over. If there was anything that was affecting the ratings I would say it was that, b/c even though I am a male I was offeneded by the whole Blair end of the story. Why would this women go so far, b/c of love? blah. And plus the good thing that came from that mess was the chemistry between Kassie and Micheal. And I agree that Florencia and the guy that plays Elijah have heat too. If anything I will suggest two things and one will get me banned form the internet. Get Marty and Todd back into each others orbit as friends and then start from there w/a romantic angle or wake up Evangeline and get her and Todd back together b/c they were good together and that could be the good woman in Todd's life that makes him want to be a better man.
