Wow Nelson, what a great article, very well thought out and simply groundbreaking. I applaud you.

Congrats to Kathy Griffin on her second consecutive emmy win!

Great article, Nelson...really interesting perspectives. I can't believe P&G won't let Nuke be featured in "OUT"- talk about hypocracy!

And I have to say the most offensive comment came from Carolyn Hinsey, which kind of makes me believe all the other stories about her...she equates coming out to "flaunting" their personal life?!! REALLY Carolyn? What about all those articles in your magazines about actors and their wives and kids, and their family vacation pictures??? That is apparently NOT breaking the fourth wall or "flaunting" their personal life but the 2 words "I'm Gay" are??? Thanks for affirming your own homophobia there. I'm getting more offended as I type this.

This may or may not be a typo, Nelson, but you called Carolyn Hinsey a "communist" instead of "columnist" in the third-from-last paragraph. Freudian slip?

"A movie is not good because it arrives at conclusions you share, or bad because it does not. A movie is not about what it is about. It is about how it is about it: about the way it considers its subject matter, and about how its real subject may be quite different from the one it seems to provide."

Loved the article, Nelson, and the many different views from those interviewed.

And how true it is that most of us savvy (and gay) daytime viewers can list the closeted actors/actresses who have yet to take that giant and bold leap of faith.

I do believe it's only a matter of time before one of our beloved daytime vets takes that leap...and i will be cheering them on.

No one can tell a person when it's a good time to "come out." They will know in their heart when they're ready to join the rest of us in Gayville.

Totally agree, Mark. When u coming to TO? Hurray — it's almost winter and I'm moving to LA soon. And Brooke needs to meet us before she's raped again and falls in love with Stephanie.

I think most soap viewers could accept a gay actor in a straight romantic storyline. Look at what happened with the George/Izzie storyline. People were upset because he was cheating on Callie and that he had no chemistry with Izzie. Knight's real-life sexuality was not an issue which surprised me.

I think this goes back to what James Reynolds said in one of Nelson's interviews. He said that the exec are still producing shows for their grandparents. Luke and Noah are the most popular show on ATWT and they are treated like S H I T while Paul and Meg are shoved down our throats. The execs have such a fear or non-white, non-hetero characters that it's ruining the industry. My theory on ATWT not wanting Noah and Luke featured in OUT is tied to the Perez Hilton story and I'll leave it at that. I'll only say that if I'm right I think it's a big mistake AND something they could use to their advantage.

I have mixed feelings about outing. I like honesty, but I also know that an actor's income will be hampered by revealing he's gay. The industry is so homophobic that there'd be no way he'd ever be cast in large, money-making roles. He'd be relegated to supporting, character parts. I can understand why he wouldn't want to do that. Chad Allen is carving out a nice niche with the Strachey television films and on Night Shift, but if he had not come out, I'd wager he'd be a lot more famous and a lot more rich. If that matters to you (and I am one who thinks that would be important), I can see why staying in the closet would be preferable. I also find it annoying when straight people say that it would be easy or easier for gay people to come out. How would they know? As much as I've been around gay men my whole life, I've never had to come out. I've never had to worry about being fired. I've never had to fight to get my S.O. benefits or worry about hospital visits.

Nelson, would some of the gay actors not speak to you even if you didn't reveal any of their info?

I like Maria Bells enthusiastic response. Which begs the question, why are there no gay character on Y&R?

I was wondering the same thing about Y&R. And especially B&B. For as many gay actors they've employed over the decades, it's ashame they have no gay characters.

The sad thing about Hollywood's homophobia is that there are a large number of gay people working behind and in front of the camera.

It all goes back to thinking your audience is dumb.

Most people know that Tony Geary is gay. It doesn't change the fact that he and Genie Francis have great chemistry as Luke and Laura.

BC.....I thought all of daytime knew about Geary...and if you look in your little blog below ur posts (in the 2009 FYC Emmy notes)...there are 2 other actors in there that are gay, too.

And do we daytime fans care?? Nope. And as a gay man, i will be happy as hell when these stars start coming out.

I really enjoyed this article, a very important piece that covers a range of viewpoints and opinions.

People really should give daytime fans more credit. We buy garbage that's WAY less believable than a gay actor is a straight role. Why is a straight actor in a gay role any better? They've given us that, and there hasn't been a problem.

It bugs me that people see the question of who's gay and who's not as such a hot-button issue. If all the gay actors in daytime were out, it wouldn't be news because A) once you're out there's not a whole lot more to talk about that doesn't exist with straight actors and B) there would be enough of them that one wouldn't be standing out from everyone else.

Of course I respect the choices any actor makes about what things in his or her personal life to reveal to the public, but the culture of needing to hide one's sexuality is something I would just be so thrilled to see come to an end.

Interesting article about Savant not wanting his heterosexuality known:

"Doug Savant is such a raging hetersexual on ABC's "Desperate Housewives" that it's hard to believe there was a time when people wondered about the actor's sexuality. The reason was because Doug spent six seasons on "Melrose Place" playing the gay character of Matt. During the early part of the show's run, he didn't want viewers to know anything about his personal life.

I have an advance copy of publicist Howard Bragman's upcoming book, "Where's My Fifteen Minutes?" and in it, he shares this story: "As Doug's publicist, people were always asking about his personal sexual orientation. He is in fact heterosexual, married, and has numerous children. But Doug thought it would be insulting to the gay community if he went out of his way to say he was straight, so we kept his embarrassing heterosexuality in the closet for a long time."

The above article was from the out in Hollywood blog Blog The story is under the Dakota Fanning story.
