Does anyone know what the deal is with directors and how they are bound to a show? I asked because while watching soap Y&R from a few weeks ago this weekend, I noticed that Grant A. Johnson was credited as directing the episode. I've seen his name tons of times in the DAYS credits, and then actually one of last week's episodes was directed by him.
I guess this makes me wonder if being both produced by Sony, maybe DAYS and Y&R allow some sharing of directors? Does anyone know how this works?
Most soaps have 4 or 5 main director. Grant A . Johnson is a freelance director, he was never apart of the Y&R directing team. I assume he's freelancing for DAYS too, but could be permanently on the team now, as he worked with Gary Tomlin on Sunset Beach.
After Ed Scott was fired from DAYS, Mike Denney and Kathryn Foster quit. Mike Denney has since returned to Y&R, and Kathryn Foster is likely to follow.
Denney, Foster and Noel Maxam are some of the best directors in the biz, as is Michael Stich from B&B and Jill Mitwell from OLTL.
It's a shame Heather Hill isn't directing soaps anymore, she was killer at Y&R, a show that always had the best in the biz. I believe Y&R has the most wins in the directing category with at least 7 Emmys.
I agree with you MTSRocks... yesterday's episode of YR reminded me a bit of the old, traditional YR I fell in love with. They're also scoring scenes better which make the episodes more intense and dramatic. I always thought YR had the best background music... they better bring it back!
