What a wonderful treat to have Tricia Cast back home on Y&R. It's like she never left and her seamless ability to slip back into the thick of things shows how much of a pro she is.
I have a question though. Was Tricia Cast nominated for her STELLAR work in 1997, I'm mainly talking about the episode where she contemplated suicide opposite Ryan McNeil? I was watching a clip on YouTube and in 1998 Steve Burton won Outstanding Supporting Actor, and in the reels it showed that Scott Reeves submitted those exact same scenes. So what happened with Cast? Unfortunately, those amazing scenes are no longer on YouTube.

Tricia Cast ever got nominated again after her win for younger lead actress in 1992. Correct me if I'm wrong? In 1997, Michelle Stafford and Victoria Rowell were nominated for Sup. Actress, with Stafford winning. And in 1998, Rowell was nominated but didn't win. And in 1999, Sharon Case was nominated and won.
I do have those scenes on my VHS tapes. I'll eventually get to YouTubing them. :-)

I'm so glad they are giving Cast something meaty. Her send-off storyline in 2003 - the boring as hell novel-writing storyline with Tomas Del Cero (Francesco Quinn) - was boring as hell.
To be honest though, but is it just me or does Nina feel empty w/o Cricket around? They need Lauralee Bell to come back soon. And I'd love for Christine to be the new DA in town and clash with Michael Baldwin.

I'm actually glad they're slightly tarnishing Cane's shiny veneer. Gives him room for growth and frankly makes him more 3-dimensional and interesting.
WE disagree on Cane. He was one of the main reasons I started watching. If we're going to kill off all the boring characters, they can start with Sharon or Nick. They're annoying me more than Amber which I never thought possible.
My main problem with this story is that it doesn't feel organic. I know they want to undo the rewrites, but the rewrites are becoming worse than the first rewrites. The Jill/Kay dynamic has never really been the same since Dickson left. Undoing the mother/daughter relationship is not going to change that. So much could have been done with the m/d story, but they rewrote it, and it has been a dud. The writing is so uneven and Nelson was right on about why it doesn't work. The whole Phillip Chancellor rewrite is going to be another one of those nonsense stories. I can sense it although I hope I'm wrong because so much at YR is just not working. I'm all for giving Cane an edge or getting him away from the black Farrah, but I think it's stupid to try to undo something that most fans don't want undone.
Who are "most fans?" Cane as the real Phillip III was an incredibly unpopular story for many longtime Y&R fans. Not only did it not make sense, it literally crapped on years and years of history, a retcon at its worst.
While most fans could have done without the real Phillip III coming back from the dead, I think many longtime fans are happy to see this nonsense reversed.

Seeing Cane squirm while Nina investigates him has made me like him so much more than I did before. Now I actually don't mind him. (Although I do still dislike the Cane/Lily scenes -- all the crap about Lily not being pregnant yet in yesterday's episode had me yelling at the TV scene. They've only been back together for like two months.)
I'll admit, probably the main reason I'm really liking the Nina story is that I'm in Nina's same position. Since I wasn't watching the show when it happened, I can completely understand her curiosity regarding how Cane came to find the Chancellors and discover that he was one. I think it's unfair to even label this as a rewrite, since when Cane was introduced he was made to look like an imposter before that got dropped. I find the whole story very exciting.
I much prefer the current Jill/Katherine relationship to when they thought they were mother and daughter. It was one of those things that, even years after we learned about it, just seemed wrong.
I should have been more clear. I think it's foolish to mess with one of the few things LML got right. Most viewers (judging from fan boards, magazines, etc.) have taken to the character of Cane. It seems silly to me to tell yet another story that depends upon DNA. I expected more from the "golden girl" than the lab was bought off to reveal the wrong DNA results especially so soon after the Jill's not Kay's daughter and the whole idiot plot involving DNA and Marge/Kay. I'm thrilled to have Thom Bierdz back, but the plotting of the story is falling flat to me. They could have written it in such a way that I would have believed it. For all I know, Cane might be lying AND still related to Phillip III, but I need to believe the story they are telling, and I don't. I would call it a rewrite as it's rewriting something the previous regime decided on. I wish MAB would stop undoing storylines and tell her own.
Maria Arena Bell knows exactly what she is doing with the character of Nina. Watching Cast bring Nina back to life has been mesmerizing, because Nina is still the same ole, tell it like it is bitch who will go toe-to-toe with Jill and Katherine and come out on top.
The way she ripped Cane a new one right in front of the 2 is prrof positive why they needed Cast (and Nina) back in Genoa City.
Cane does not stand a chance with Nina around, and watching this show today, it reminded me of the many great scenes Cooper, Walton and Cast shared so many years ago.
today's best line......
NINA: Cane's stories has so many holes in it, i can drive a semi through it!
I thought the episode today was downright stupid. Are we really to believe that the military continues to allow a soldier to stay in Iraq when there's the possibility that he has Huntington's disease? Or that they never sent him for testing? Or that they would allow him to continue serving without being tested? Come on! I know Nina has to have a reason to exhume the body (another howler), but this is just lazy writing. If I had faith that the writing would be strong, I wouldn't be bothered, but most of MAB's writing depends upon the idiot plot.

I agree/disagree w/u Crystal in a way. I see where you are coming from how MAB is trying to undo storylines from a previous regime, but they are spawning of into her own stories. And I thought today's episode was good. Cast, not seein her from b4, is really bringing it and she was heartbreaking today and I can't wait for John Driscoll's debut.

I liked yesterday's episode. I loved Nina fighting with Jill and Katherine. It's kind of cool how having Nina there against Cane is sort of forcing Jill and Katherine to be on the same side. I wasn't bothered by the whole military/Huntington's disease thing. It seemed logical to me that he wouldn't be forced to get tested or leave his service just because he was showing non-threatening symptoms that might be consistent with early warning signs for Huntington's, but admittedly I really don't know anything about how the Army would handle something like this and very, very little about Huntington's disease.
If Y&R wanted to tell a powerful story, they could have Phillip's doctors find out during his follow up tests that he was hiv positive...
Imagine Phillip coming to town and hiding the fact that he was hiv positive...Rafe starting to fall for him, and Phillip rebuffing his advances...then finally breaking down to Rafe that he had the disease.
And before you all say it....i know you will think it would be "stereotypical" to give one of the few gay leading men in daytime hiv, but it still would be a great story to tell. Let's face it, there has yet to be a good, well written gay story on daytime television...Look at how pathetic Luke and Naoh are. No gay couple acts that way and takes 23 years to have a first kiss.
MARKPGH, I agree. I don't understand why this story has to be played so fast. Why not show Driscoll's Phillip being shown to have symptoms of a disease where they would need to test/exhume the body. H.I.V. wouldn't have the same symptoms of Huntington's, but at least it would be something different, and it could play in with Cricket and her mother. Instead, everything happened off screen and the storyline is playing so fast. This is what Latham would do. Big events would happen off screen and she would miss the storyline beats. If Tricia Cast is only available for a certain time, work her to the bone while you have her. Don't rush it and then come up with a ridiculous story that treats the audience like they have no brain cells. As someone who works in the medical field, I can assure you Phillip would have been forced to take a test by the military or risk serious consequences. They would not have allowed him to serve until the results came back negative. There would have been no need to exhume the body. It's all utter nonsense.
Exactly....and Tricia Cast is still the stellar actress she's always been. I do believe, however, that when she came back, she did sign a contract. Maybe Nelson can find out the length of that contract, because i agree Crystal, i don't want them rushing this story in any way...like B&B does with their stories.
Let Rafe and Phillip fall in love...and let them be portrayed as a happy, stable gay couple. HIV is not a death sentence, so i hope the writers don't treat it as such.
If Master Bill Bell himself were still alive, he would drag the story out for years on end. But come to think of it, i don't think Bill would have ever introduced this gay story to begin with ( no disrespect to him, but Bill never had the balls to develop a gay male character in all of his years doing soaps)...and having Katherine share a kiss with a woman some 25 years ago doesn't count.
