I'm affraid to say but the more that I think about it, I'm thinking that an Actor like Tom Cruise, who I still think is a tremedous actor, and I'm a fan of, might never get an Oscar. Yes, he's been nominated twice for "Born on the Fourth of July" and "Magnolia". But I think there still might be some residual backlash on all the Scientology controversy. I'm not too sure if The Academy still respects him.
Who are others do you think might never get an Oscar even though they deserve one?

He was also nominated for best actor for "Jerry Maguire".

Not everyone, is a religious bigot. And I'd like to point out that there are many highly educated scientists , MD's, ND's ,Nobel winners and Laureates, investigative journalists , PhD's , neurosurgeons, et al ,people with NO affiliation with Scientology, who agree with some of his practices. Not only that, more and more people, are beginning to lose their ignorance. Tom isnt out of the running for Oscar. He's not John Wayne Gacy. Look at Mickey Rourke. He's a viable threat to win this year.

Wow I really like these people. I think Brendan is too busy making light , visual effects films and may not go back to the films he made where he proved he could act along with the best of them. I think all of them can transcend, provided of course that Piper doesnt retire.
ps to caresa* :me too.

I like those people too Babypook. I hope they will get at least one Oscar nod in there life..but nothing to that point yet. Lauris has 3 noms...but she sort of fell off the radar awhile ago.
Other actors that may not see an Oscar nod or a win are:
Mark Wahlberg Sandra Bullock Elisabeth Shue

Drew Barrymore is definitely the kind of actor I can imagine being applauded by AMPAS in a big way if she makes a film even remotely against-type. Remember the huge buzz she had at the beginning of last year for "Grey Gardens" before it was put on HBO.
Bruce Willis is another one I can imagine seeing on the podium in his later years.
I think that there are some great actors that will never get an Oscar, but most of them are under-the-radar character actors. People like Beth Grant, Liz Smith, Jack Kehler, Eileen Atkins, Danny Trejo etc.

I think "Grey Gardens" will be netting some nominations at the end of this year for next year awards season. Lange was Oscar nominated for Sweet Dreams..and that was a HBO movie.

"Sweet Dreams" was made by HBO Pictures which was a production company owned by HBO that made a lot of movies in the 1980s, Woody Allen's "Hannah and Her Sisters" was made by HBO Pictures, but "Dreams" premiered in the theatres. Movies that premiere on television are not eligible for Oscars.

Blanchett/Winslet Fan - "Grey Gardens" is a TV movie, so it won't be eligible for Oscars. I'd say it is an Emmy shoo-in, though.

Glenn Close and Sigourney Weaver since they're not making any film this days. I hope that they would be given meaty roles whether lead or supporting where they could shine and finally get an Oscvar [though most will connote it as an award for all their film performances]
I hope The Office wins as Best Comedy Series for this year's Emmy Awards.

I'm sorry, but I think Cruise is a VERY limited actor who doesn't deserve an Oscar. He is incapable of disappearing into a role.
I'd be shocked if he ever won a competitive Oscar.
Tom Cruise is Tom Cruise. He can never NOT be Tom Cruise. It would take a Herculean effort for any actor of his stature to make us forget who he is when he's on-screen. I think Meryl Streep may be the only superstar who can vanish in a role, and even then, part of you is always still aware you're watching Meryl Streep.
Tom Cruise was remarkable in "Magnolia." And he's been great in some of his bigger projects, like "Minority Report" and "War of the Worlds." (I didn't like the latter film, but greatly admired his performance.) I think he may win an Oscar someday, but it might come as Tom O'Neil suggested, when he's an older veteran like Paul Newman and it becomes a de facto lifetime achievement award.
As for the other names, I think Drew Barrymore is well-poised to receive an Oscar nod someday. She's Hollywood royalty, she overcame addictions to become a successful Hollywood starlet, she's still in that beauty-queen stage of her career, and she takes interesting chances: "Donnie Darko," "Riding in Cars with Boys," "Confessions of a Dangerous Mind," "Grey Gardens." With the right role in the right film, she could easily land an Oscar nod or even a win. If Reese Witherspoon could do it, Barrymore can do it; their careers are similar.
"A movie is not good because it arrives at conclusions you share, or bad because it does not. A movie is not about what it is about. It is about how it is about it: about the way it considers its subject matter, and about how its real subject may be quite different from the one it seems to provide." - Roger Ebert, from the introduction to "Awake in the Dark" (2006)
