The nominees for this year were: Cate Blanchett in Elizabeth as "Queen Elizabeth I" Fernanda Montenegro in Central Station as "Dora" Gwyneth Paltrow in Shakespeare in Love as "Viola de Lesseps" Meryl Streep in One True Thing as "Kate Gulden" Emily Watson in Hilary and Jackie as "Jacqueline du Pre"
My Ranking:
-.Blanchett -.Montenegro -.Paltrow -.Streep
5. Watson - Another repellent performance from an actress I really, really dislike. She earned massive praise for being as noxiously manipulative as she could possibly be in the sordid, sensationalist and downright disgusting "Breaking the Waves", and she tries to do the same thing here. Unfortunately, all her efforts to make Jackie sympathetic just make her even more repulsive (and the character is already incredibly unlikeable on the page). And the movie sucks. The only saving grace is Rachel Griffiths's quietly studied performance.
My Personal Ballot: 1. Susanne Lothar in Funny Games as "Anna" 2. Natasha Lyonne in Slums of Beverly Hills as "Vivian Abromowitz" 3. Ally Sheedy in High Art as "Lucy Berliner" 4. Jane Horrocks in Little Voice as "Laura 'L.V.' Hoff" 5. Christina Ricci in Buffalo '66 as "Layla"
"Notorious was nice, but it’s not in the color purple range" "Angels and Demons may get nominated for cinematography the imagery was profound" "District Nine will definitely win for best foreign film it made money and everyone loved it" ~ 8movies

Cate Blanchett, easily! I was SHOCKED when she lost (okay, I was still young and naive and didn't know anything about the Oscars). That said, Gwyneth's performance has grown on me, but I think she is overshadowed by Fiennes and the Supporting cast.
01. Montenegro 02. Paltrow 03. Streep 04. Blanchett 05. Watson
With the exception of Montenegro (and to a lesser extent, Paltrow), I'm not too crazy about this lineup.
My ballot:
01. Ally Sheedy, High Art 02. Susanne Lothar, Funny Games 03. Fernanda Montenegro, Central Station 04. Holly Hunter, Living Out Loud 05. Christina Ricci, The Opposite of Sex / Buffalo '66

#1. Cate Blanchett, Elizabeth -The movie that made Cate Blanchett a star, and rightfully so. While the movie wasn't exactly the greatest, she alone is worth the time to sit down and watch the movie. It is a powerful performance.
#2. Fernanda Montenengro, Central Station -Another one of those "basing it off of one viewing many years ago" situations. At the time, I was impressed with her performance and it was one of those rare occasions when they let a foreign language performance into the race (although that year they gave the win to Roberto Benigni). I need to see this movie again soon.
#3. Emily Watson, Hilary and Jackie
#4. Meryl Streep, One True Thing
#5. Gwyneth Paltrow, Shakespeare in Love -Not as bad as some people make it out to be, but it certainly isn't the best in this category.

Blanchett was awesome in Elizabeth I and even though I haven't watch Shakespeare in Love, I can say I am shock she lost to Gwyneth (who I think is OK).

While I do think Paltrow was good in an extremely well written and well executed film (with a helluva ensemble), it was the epitome of those Flavor Of The Month wins that used to pollute the Supporting Actress category for many decades. Roberto too, that year, for that matter. The Academy hit a turning point with Hudson in '00 but they've had them since a few major times sadly.
But yeah, Blanchett in a cakewalk.
It's a shame Ally Sheedy didn't have her moment then.
