This was an all-around strong year for supporting actress performances.
The nominees were: Judi Dench in Chocolat as "Armande Voizin" Marcia Gay Harden in Pollock as "Lee Krasner" Kate Hudson in Almost Famous as "Penny Lane" Frances McDormand in Almost Famous as "Elaine Miller" Julie Walters in Billy Elliot as "Mrs. Wilkinson"
My Ranking: 1. Hudson - Hudson made this role memorable through sheer presence, as her mother did in her Oscar-winning role in "Cactus Flower". Hudson's role here requires a bit more depth than the Toni role in "Cactus Flower", and Kate nails it. Graceful, quietly touching work that is definitely underrated.
2. Dench - A performance not many people like on the internet, but I thought she did the best she could with a very cheesy role. It is definitely corny, but this performance successfully tugs the heartstrings and makes Armande a lovable, memorable character.
3. Harden - She was strong in this, but I think the performance suffered from the film's many faults - namely Ed Harris trying to turn it into a vanity project. Harden was never really given a chance to shine here, but she deserves props for fighting against the constraints of the role and the picture.
4. McDormand - I didn't really like McDormand in this. She's passable but I never found this mother role all-too realistic and a lot of her dialogue just didn't sound natural.
-.Walters (saw the film too long ago to remember the perf)
My Personal Ballot: 1. Madeline Kahn in Judy Berlin as "Alice Gold" 2. Jennifer Connelly in Requiem for a Dream as "Marion Silver" 3. Siobhan Fallon in Dancer in the Dark as "Brenda" 4. Catherine Deneuve in Dancer in the Dark as "Kathy" 5. Kate Hudson in Almost Famous as "Penny Lane"
"Notorious was nice, but it’s not in the color purple range" "Angels and Demons may get nominated for cinematography the imagery was profound" "District Nine will definitely win for best foreign film it made money and everyone loved it" ~ 8movies

01. Zhang Ziyi, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon 02. Laura Linney, The House of Mirth 03. Kirsten Dunst, The Virgin Suicides 04. Parker Posey, Best in Show 05. Jennifer Coolidge, Best in Show
And I need to watch "Judy Berlin". I love Madeline Kahn, and I've heard great things about her work in that movie.
#1. Marcia Gay Harden, Pollock -One of the biggest Oscar upsets ever was also one of the most deserving wins in recent years. While "Pollock" was definitely made to be for Ed Harris, I think she stole the movie and was more believable in her role. She has both great subtle moments and powerful "Oscar scenes" (her most famous one was shown as her Oscar clip, the "You need! You need!" one). I would go as far as saying that she is my favorite Supporting Actress win of the decade, or up there with Zeta-Jones and Swinton.
#2. Frances McDormand, Almost Famous -First of all, I LOVED this movie and feel it should've WON Best Picture and it got nominated over all of those other movies (only Crouching Tiger and Traffic deserved to be there). I also enjoyed McDormand's work as the semi-loony and overprotective mother of William (Patrick Fugit). This is one of my favorite performances of hers but I still don't think it compares to the work of Marcia Gay Harden.
#3. Kate Hudson, Almost Famous -A performance that has grown on me but I still don't think that she necessarily should've won the Oscar for it. She was the frontrunner that year but ended up getting trumped by late-comer Harden. Despite my massive love for the film itself, I still wouldn't give her (or McDormand) the win here.
#4. Julie Walters, Billy Elliot -I enjoyed the film and her performance and thought that the movie deserved a BP nomination, but I have not seen it in a LONG time to make that fair of an assumption....still, I do remember liking her performance and feeling she deserved a nomination. She is definitely an underrated actress.
#5. Judi Dench, Chocolat -She is one of the greatest actresses of all time, but this performance (while I said was one of "Chocolat's" deserving nods) isn't one I would necessarily nominate. She was a highlight in the film but she has done better work than this.

Judy Berlin is awkwardly directed and it doesn't know if it wants to be a comedy or a drama or both, but there's some great acting by Edie Falco, Barbara Barrie, Madeline Kahn and Bette Henritze. Madeline Kahn was my fave, though. A bittersweet performance that is also the bittersweet ending to her great career.

I can't believe I put Dench last for anything!!! I love Dench, but thought she was a bit hokey in this one. No question Harden is heads and shoulders above the rest in 2000.
1. Marcia Gay Harden, "Pollock" (best supporting actress winner so far this decade) 2. Kate Hudson, "Almost Famous" 3. Frances McDormand, "Almost Famous" 4. Julie Walters, "Billy Elliot" 5. Judi Dench, "Chocolat"

My Personal Nominations Marcia Gay Harden - Pollock Kate Winslet - Quills Jennifer Connelly - Requiem for a Dream Kate Hudson - Almost Famous Judi Dench - Chocolat
If there could have been 6 nominees McDormand would be there.
My website and blog are taking a little break, since Geocities is closing and I now have to upload everything to a new site, so I am working on a new design and it is gonna take me a while, hoping to get it up by Oscar Season.
Loved Marcia Gay Harden, but I'm gonna have to go with Kate Hudson. She was fantastic, perfect for the role in every way. McDormand was good here too, but I find her nomination being the weakest performance of the bunch.

I've never watched Pollock, but I'm ranking it anyway! =)
1)Julie Walters: ironic and sweet at the same time, Mrs. Wilkinson is not exactly a likeable caracther, but Walters gives her depth and some sympathy. Unfortunetely, lack of screentime and a money scene hurt her.
2) Francis McDormand: stranges me see everyone putting her at the bottom. I thought her work in Almost Famous was very funny (although, a little over the top).
3) Kate Hudson: I don't remember being very moved about her. Maybe I just missed it.
4) Judi Dench: ok, she's a old lady, talking about sad things and stuff. Very bait and blah.
I don't see McDormand at the bottom more than once and 4th maybe 2 times or so.
