I thought I'd change my rating method. If I don't like doing it this way, I'll go back to letter grades later. I saw a bunch of films at festivals in 2007 that are getting released this year, so I'll start with those.
Star ratings out of four.
* * * ½ Bomb It Kung Fu Panda Married Life
* * * Alexandra In Bruges Iron Man The Last Mistress The Other Boleyn Girl Year of the Fish
* * ½ The Air I Breathe Brick Lane Charlie Bartlett Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull The Spiderwick Chronicles Teeth
* * Baby Mama Cloverfield Hanc0ck Suburban Girl 21
* ½ Fool's Gold
* The Love Guru 10,000 BC Welcome Home Roscoe Jenkins
½ * Drillbit Taylor Speed Racer

"A movie is not good because it arrives at conclusions you share, or bad because it does not. A movie is not about what it is about. It is about how it is about it: about the way it considers its subject matter, and about how its real subject may be quite different from the one it seems to provide." - Roger Ebert, from the introduction to "Awake in the Dark" (2006)

742 - what did you think about Boleyn? Ain't It Cool had a couple reviews on the rough cuts and they said Portman and Sturgess keep the show afloat. I'm not sure whether or not I'm going to see it yet; I was waiting for someone here to report back on it.

I liked the rough cut. I did think Natalie Portman was the strongest thing in it. I don't remember much of Jim Sturgess's work, but I remember that he was good. Scarlet Johansson is decent, but her sketchy British accent is distracting. It would be interesting to see how the final cut compares, if it's a notably different experience, but I would recommend the film.

This reminds me of last year, when I was waiting anxiously for the release of The Golden Age. It's great that you've seen it. This is one I'm definitely going to watch, and as soon as it's released around here. Happy to hear Portman was good, becuz the clips I've seen make her look to me, like she's over-acting. It also doesnt look very concerned with historical accuracy; but that doesnt matter to me in this instance. Thanks for reporting back about it! Your final review will be interesting.

My reaction to the trailer was: "Oh no, another miss for Portman." I'm glad to hear she and the film aren't as mediocre as the trailer would suggest.

I saw her last film "Goya's Ghosts" at a film society screening at sort of a cinema club/coffee bar and Lord was it godawful. Hammy acting and ridiculously plotted. Natalie Portman was very unconvincing in double roles. I actually have rarely thought highly of her as an actress as I prefer acting to be effortless and she always seems to be working very, very hard... even in her Oscar nominated role in "Closer".

I like her as an actress but she struggles to find good film roles. And, to top it off, she's mostly famous for the horrible Star Wars prequels, where she and every other actor in the films were awful.

Just came back from seeing The Other Boleyn Girl ... again. Imagine my luck when my editor sent me to a screening of the finished version. My rating still stands, though I may decide to bump it up half a star. The finished version is a little shorter, a little tighter, a little better, not drastically so. Most significantly, the Scarlet Johansson role has been reduced some. Before, she and Natalie Portman were more or less equal, but now the story focuses more on Anne Boleyn, and Mary is the secondary character.
I'm guessing Johansson's performance didn't go over well. Her accent's still pretty wobbly, and, as I overheard from someone after the screening was over, "She's mastered the blank stare." I don't think she's that bad -- I see emotion behind those eyes -- but this is still Portman's show.
My complete review won't come out until the release of the film. I'll post a link to it then, since I know there's interest in the movie.
