The rare horror film that is very scary and shot with a lot of style. A very simple film, it really is just two people being menaced by masked fiends, but effective.

"A movie is not good because it arrives at conclusions you share, or bad because it does not. A movie is not about what it is about. It is about how it is about it: about the way it considers its subject matter, and about how its real subject may be quite different from the one it seems to provide." - Roger Ebert, from the introduction to "Awake in the Dark" (2006)
Adding The Last Mistress (* * *) - Saw this last fall at the NY Film Festival and according to Metacritic it was released last weekend, so I'm adding it to my list.

It looks like hot stuff. It is on IFC In Theatres On Demand so I am planning on watching it. That film and "Savage Grace" both caught my eye while going through the On Demand options.

It's a very sexual film, but not as "sexy" as I think it's being advertised. The sex is often very sad and despairing.
Here's the review I wrote last fall in case you're interested:

Starts as a fast, funny spoof of super hero movies, and the PR trade, with great comic performances from Will Smith and Justin Batemen but then about halfway through the film takes a surprise turn, well not that surprising as I had it figured out, and takes a total nosedive from which it never recovers. The movie loses all humor and ceases to make much sense. A great idea for a film, drunken super hero that nobody likes, but the film does not live up to the concept.
B+ for the first half/D for the second half= C

Very funny and a pretty good action film to boot. Steve Carrell makes a surprisingly lovable Maxwell Smart and Anne Hathaway is very sexy with great comic timing. Loses steam near the end but I greatly enjoyed it for most of its length.

I didnt have big expectations for this film, but taken overall, I enjoyed it. It had great fx and as always, Will Smith was very good. Bateman and Theron were ok, although of the two Charlize was the more interesting character.
Wildly uneven but unique. I'm not convinced that Peter Berg is the guy who should be doing a remake of Dune. B

Written by Scott Smith (A Simple Plan); I took a long look at those plants, and they were plastic sexfoils. Also, the plants were brighter than the people. Good night-time shots with overexposed day-time cinematography; ernest performances.
