"A movie is not good because it arrives at conclusions you share, or bad because it does not. A movie is not about what it is about. It is about how it is about it: about the way it considers its subject matter, and about how its real subject may be quite different from the one it seems to provide." - Roger Ebert, from the introduction to "Awake in the Dark" (2006)
This film, took no time getting started. With blended archival footage, I didnt know if I would make it through to the end. Determined, I'm glad I did. Defiance has quite a bit to say about good leadership, why guerilla warfare works, the wisdom of elders, and how the collective can overcome anything. It wasnt difficult to believe that Craig and Schreiber were brothers, and the scenes with them were among the best. There is, a lot of grief in this film, but also courage. It wasnt easy to watch, but I'm not sorry I saw it. One of Zwick's better efforts. The cinematography and score were terrific.

And yet the audience was eating it up. Proving yet again why I, like Daniel Day Lewis in "There Will Be Blood", want to make my millions so I can live alone in my castle leaving all these dolts behind.
(I only saw it because my cousin came in from out of town and she was in too bad a mood for a serious movie. Despite that she hated it too. I will be seeing "Waltz with Bashir" today and hopefully it can get that stupid movie taste out of my mouth.)

Wonderfully inventive, visually dazzling stop-motion animation fantasy. Scottie dogs with bat wings and creatures made of knitting needles were sights I never expected to see in my life. The film is also truly and deeply scary... the three or four year old boy next to me had to be taken out... but in the best and most satisying way. Dakota Fanning voices the lead character with pluck and charm while Teri Hatcher is surprisingly terrific as both Coraline's put-upon real Mom and the strange, seemingly perfect Other Mom in the alternate world. The film is a delight and a visual wonder. It alternately reminded me of the work of Tim Burton, who collaborated with director Henry Selick on "The Nightmare Before Christmas", and David Lynch... it reached a Lynchian level of weirdness and like many of his films it comments on suburban ennui. A terrific film made even better in 3-D, a living garden and mouse circus explode to life in the 3-D format, and a worthy contender for next year's animated film Oscar.

Ugh. This film was such a mess. Never committing to being either supernatural, horror, or thriller, it ends up being none of them. Once again we see Elizabeth Banks, who is everywhere these days, in a thankless role where, her character is a cartoon. David Strathairn has nothing to do and the lead, Emily Browning, is disengaging. The one bright light is Arielle Kebbel, the only 'character' with any interest. The screenplay showed signs of true crappiness right from the beginning, and by the end it left absolutely no doubt.

Inkheart; Iain Softley
Gorgeous to look at, and even self-mocking, with a Topeka Kansas sign clattering in the aftermath of a tornado; with a promising cast including Helen Mirren, Andy Sirkis, Paul Bettany and Jim Broadbent, with a cameo by Jennifer Connelly, we have Brendan Fraser once again romping in a visual-effects driven fantasy, replete with the requisite ferret, creatures, and 'toto'. The young lead, Eliza Bennett (Nanny McPhee), is completely wasted and didnt inspire me to root for her one bit. In fact, a fantasy about scary creatures and characters being pulled in or out of a fantasy novel doesnt exactly inspire a child to read, imo. Helen Mirren's Elinor declares early in the film that she's had enough, and departs, for a while. Only Paul Bettany rises above this mished-mashed screenplay. He is terrific here, showing that his commitment to a character even in a light film is a saving grace. He effectively drew me in, and made me care about what happened to him. I give Softley credit for tackling a fantasy genre that even had moments (well, seconds) of brilliance, particularly in the world seen through Dustfinger's eyes. I like Brendan Fraser, but his character here is sock-puppet friendly. Although, the common bond he forges with Dustfinger has something to say about promises made and a shared struggle. For Paul Bettany, I'm giving this a B-.

I am looking forward to the Friday The 13th remake. I thought Rob Zombie did a pretty good job on his remake of Halloween. So i want to see what this director will do for the Friday remake.
