Dark Matter; Shi-Zheng Chen
I avoided watching this film until this week. It has moments of absolute brilliance, with great rapport between Streep and Aidan Quinn. Ye Liu was mesmerizing as, the soft-spoken, brilliant cosmologist and student who formulated what we now think of as a given: dark matter. Worth the watch. Smart, intelligent, heartbreaking, and illuminating. But, it's really a shame that Liu Xing did not understand, university politics, or the Western medical system, among other things.

A real revelation for me, this film. It exceeded my expectations; and for the first time, I didnt catch Van Damme acting. He was, completely convincing and very moving. Fashioned in non-linear form, with cinematography and camera angles which I truly appreciated, I wouldnt hesitate to recommend this to anyone. And, this is Jean -Claude Van Damme, who provided insights into his character never before seen (to me) in his previous films. There is a scene of JCVD shot in profile, slightly from behind, which clearly shows a Van Damme we havent seen before; and his monologue moved me. I would LOVE to see him get back to North American, or at least, more widely-available films.

Although Bedtime Stories contained mild toilet humour and was even a bit offensive in parts, I found myself laughing throughout. I especially enjoyed Guy Pearce in a comedic role and mildly surprising for me is that Courteney Cox may have delivered the best performance from the cast. The other amazing thing is that I found Adam Sandler's bond with his niece and nephew, both of whom are 'smarter' than he is, believable.

Well; what strikes me about this film is the striking animation. The film takes a dark turn very early on, and the message it sends are mixed, both good and bad. It's entertaining enough for a very young audience (3+), and has a few gags for adults, such as lines from Planet of the Apes, and enough references to NY to laugh at. The bits with the zebra are hilarious. But overall, this movie is on the low-brow side.

The action scenes are spectacular and the photography is beautiful but why must Edward Zwick write his own scripts? He's got an eye for visuals but his scripts are always painfully obvious and hokey. This could have been a terrific film, besides the visuals the performances are also strong, but the tin ear for dialogue sinks a lot of it. Worth seeing once.

Two terrific performances, particularly given by Gwyneth Paltrow, highlights this character study in unrequited love, relationships, and the nature of friendships. Paltrow was far better here than she was in Great Expectations, where she plays a somewhat similar character. A gorgeous score and honest performances by all, including Vinessa Shaw.
