The nominees for this year are:
Anne Hathaway in Rachel Getting Married as "Kym"
Angelina Jolie in Changeling as "Christine Collins"
Melissa Leo in Frozen River as "Ray Eddy"
Meryl Streep in Doubt as "Sister Aloysius Beauvier"
Kate Winslet in The Reader as "Hanna Schmitz"

My Ranking:
1. Hathaway - I have a feeling that the character was well-written enough that any reasonably talented actress could have impressed in it without having to resort to innovation or creativity (DeWitt's, Irwin's and Winger's roles were more underwritten and posed a bigger challenge to their actors), but this still showcases Hathaway's unexpectedly powerful acting talent. Her monologue is excruciatingly well-done.

2. Leo - I wasn't blown away by this performance as many others were. She was good enough in the role and she slipped into the character, but I don't think she handled the ending very well and her co-star McDermott (as her teenage son) impressed me with his potential more than she impressed me with her performance. Still, I'm glad she's getting her due after working so hard for so long as a character actress (and I'm sure she's thrilled with the nomination - she seemed so happy to be part of the glitz and glamor of the Critics Choice awards... indeed she seemed to be the only happy person there!).

3. Jolie - Jolie's performance is like the entirety of the film "Dreamgirls" to me - a bunch of "BIG SCENES" strung together with no organic connection between them. She can cry and scream well enough, but she has next-to-no story arc, a basically wispy character on the page (her grieving mother is not developed as anything other than a grieving mother) and a distracting makeup job (consistently perfect) that makes the performance and character seem even less real. Could have benefited from a bit more planning and a bit more grit.

-.Streep
-.Winslet

My Personal Ballot:
1. Sally Hawkins in Happy-Go-Lucky as "Poppy Cross"
2. Sally Hawkins in Happy-Go-Lucky as "Poppy Cross"
3. Sally Hawkins in Happy-Go-Lucky as "Poppy Cross"
4. Sally Hawkins in Happy-Go-Lucky as "Poppy Cross"
5. Sally Hawkins in Happy-Go-Lucky as "Poppy Cross"

"Notorious was nice, but it’s not in the color purple range"
"Angels and Demons may get nominated for cinematography the imagery was profound"
"District Nine will definitely win for best foreign film it made money and everyone loved it"

Out of this group I think Leo gave the best performance. But Kristin Scott Thomas was better than everyone on this list, imo. And so was Sally Hawkins.

Haven't seen "Rachel Getting Married" yet.

#1. Kate Winslet, The Reader
-This should be her yer and not only does she deserve it out of the nominees, but she deserves because she has never won as well and this would be a great opportunity to award her. She also has "Revolutionary Road", which I actually think may have been a slightly better performance but both are great in different ways, "The Reader" performance being more subtle and her "Rev Road" was more showy. While "The Reader" loses its luster as the films progresses, Kate Winslet always remains the film's highlight and she is enough of a reason to see the movie. Her scenes with David Cross give me goosebumps and their chemistry is perfect for their relationship; their scenes are the best parts of the movie. This would be a deserved win and I would be sad to see Kate lose again.

#2. Melissa Leo, Frozen River
-A nice, solid movie that has a very strong performance by character actress Melissa Leo, whom I have never heard of prior to this movie, and I don't even remember seeing her in anything else. I must say that this performance seems very real and I almost felt like I was watching a glorified documentary. This is just one of those performances that doesn't sound like it would be special, but once you see it, you know why you are hearing so much praise for it.

#3. Meryl Streep, Doubt
-I thought that she had some great moments in the movie and if she happened to win the Oscar, I wouldn't be upset because she does deserve a 3rd Oscar....but another part of me wouldn't be too happy because I found her performance to be a little hammy at times and her last scene actually made me cringe. If the rumors are true about "Julie and Julia", then I say give her the Oscar next year and give Kate her due this year.

#4. Angelina Jolie, Changeling
-This was one of Jolie's best perfomances but I found it to be very one-note on some level. She did show that she has talent, which I don't question, but I think there will better performances this year that deserved a slot more. Like....

....Sally Hawkins, who was robbed!! She deserved a nomination (only a nomination though). I also still need to see Kristin Scott Thomas' performance.

...None of them were bad, but I'm certainly underwhelmed by the lot. Wish Winslet had been nominated for REVOLUTIONARY ROAD instead...not that it's a better film than THE READER, but certainly a better performance.

Hathaway, Winslet, & Leo in that order. Scott-Thomas & Hawkins should be here.

Sally Hawkins, Kristin Scott Thomas and Michelle Williams should've replaced Streep, Jolie and Winslet (I would rather have had her never win than for that performance in THAT film) so that this category could've been one of the best of all the 81 years of Oscar.

I mean, how GOOD does this look:

Best Performance By An Actress In A Leading Role
-Anne Hathaway, Rachel Getting Married
-Sally Hawkins, Happy-Go-Lucky
-Melissa Leo, Frozen River
-Kristin Scott Thomas, I've Loved You So Long
-Michelle Williams, Wendy & Lucy

Absolute perfection.

Do you think Meryl will be nominated for Best Actress for Mamma Mia?

I'm sorry Michal, all of us want meryl to win the Oscar in every movie she takes part in it. Mamma Mia! is a great movie but as i say i don't think it's for the oscars, sometimes they prefer Drama insted of Comedy or musical (that's what i see when i compare the oscars for comedy and the oscars for drama). Meryl has more probabilities that she and the movie wins in that awards that they have the categorie in musical/comedy, actress or movie. I agree that with all the proyects that she has mabye she wins for at least one of them or more. We have to be positive but the Oscar it's more complicated to predict.
