We all know that there are some actors that will purposely pick a part to win an Oscar. What do you think was the most shameless attempt by an actor/actress to win?
For me,it has to be Cameron Diaz in In Her Shoes. I'm sorry, but that was just horrendous. The movie itself wasn't terrible, but her acting was really lousy.
Oh, pacinofan, you took the words out of my mouth. After so many interesting performances in film and on the stage, Spacey chose Pay It Forward? Ugh. What a waste.

I know. He amazed me on Broadway in "The Iceman Cometh". I supported his Oscar wins for "The Usual Suspects" and "American Beauty". I thought he should have been nominated for his surprisingly touching work in "L.A. Confidential", and I probably would have supported another win for it. He already had two Oscars and a Tony, for "Lost in Yonkers", so what the hell did he need to take lame but Oscar begging roles like "Pay it Forward" and "The Shipping News"? What a sad turn.
Oh, I thought Helen Hunt was much worse than Spacey in the lame "Pay it Forward" but I was never a fan of her movie work. I was the biggest Spacey and he cut me deep.

Um, Tom Cruise in The Last Samurai. And I actually kind of like the film, if only for the stunning visuals, raw battle sequences (two hallmarks of Zwick's career), and, of course, Ken Watanabe's performance.
I'd also go as far as to say Brad Pitt and Anthony Hopkins in Legends of the Fall, another gorgeous Zwick film.
''His face is a battlefield of moral conflicts; the pain that comes through his eyes, he's like a young Monty Clift or Paul Newman.'' --Martin Scorsese on Leonardo DiCaprio
Well, first thing that sprang to mind was Renee Zellweger in 'Cold Mountain'.. She was able to pull it off. I have never seen an actress give a performance more hellbent on winning an Oscar, EVER.
I prefer subtler things normally. Though hystrionics can be done correctly: Charlize Theron for example, looked, acted, even sounded exactly like her Wuornos.
As for one that failed at the attempt? I would have to say Ed Harris in 'The Hours' (though I LOVED him as Pollock).

I agree about Hunt, but it seems like a lot of Spacey roles lately are all about the big "O": Beyond the Sea, The Life of David Gale, The United States of Leland, The Shipping News & K-PAX all seem very Oscar baity to me, especially Beyond The Sea.
Oh & Charlize Theron in North Country.
