My friend recently sent his mom a Mother's Day present.

Inside was a copy of the play 'Oedipus Rex' and a copy of the DVD 'Rosemary's Baby.'

With it, he put a note that said, "Love you, Mom. Say hi to Dad for me."

For me, the ultimate "mom" movie would have to be 'Mildred Pierce.'

Mildred Pierce, Peyton Place and Imitation of Life (1959) are my favorite Mother movies.

Serial Mom
The Graduate
Throw Mama From the Train

Those were the other three.

I think that Almodovar's 'All About My Mother' should be on that list.

Nothing like HIV positive transexuals impregnating nuns to make one think of Mom.

Unusually and exceedingly peculiar
and altogether quite impossible to describe.

"There's an old joke - um... two elderly women are at a Catskill mountain resort, and one of 'em says, "Boy, the food at this place is really terrible." The other one says, "Yeah, I know; and such small portions." Well, that's essentially how I feel about life - full of loneliness, and misery, and suffering, and unhappiness, and it's all over much too quickly. The... the other important joke, for me, is one that's usually attributed to Groucho Marx; but, I think it appears originally in Freud's "Wit and Its Relation to the Unconscious," and it goes like this - I'm paraphrasing - um, "I would never want to belong to any club that would have someone like me for a member." That's the key joke of my adult life, in terms of my relationships with women. " - Alvy Singer

Not a masterpiece by any means and quite flawed, but "Losing Isaiah" gets me every time as does "Stella." "Terms of Endearment," "Imitation of Life" (1959 version), and a pretty obscure Mexican film called "Rosas Blancas Para Mi Hermana Negra" (White Roses for my Black Sister) make up my own personal trifecta.

Veda annoyed me too much in "Mildred Pierce" to really care for that relationship.

I'll also add "To Each His Own."

I think that "The Others" is great to see with mom to show how badly a man can behave, i guess...

My favourite Mom is

Auntie Mame... I know, I know she was the aunt but... she was like a mother.

Another example of perfect mom is Dustin Hoffmans´s Krammer vs Krammer...

My favourite mom (characters)

Anne Revere in National Velvet
Toni Collette in 6th Sense
Dianne Wiest in Parenhood
Helen Mirren in Godsford Park
Dumbo´s Mom in Dumbo.
the mom in "Witness".
Brenda Ficker or whatever is her surname in "My left Foot". Fritz dont dare to make any joke about that... i know what it can means in German.

"Freaky Friday", I agree, is a great mother-daughter film. Frances McDormand in "Almost Famous" is a wonderful one-of-a-kind mom.

It can be surprising though, what "mother" films your kids like. "White Oleander" with Michelle Pfeiffer (I look like a really REALLY good mom in comparison, so I'm okay with it). "Bless the Child" with Kim Basinger (which they watch every Easter) - Basinger really fights for the good of the child, so I'm okay with that too...

For aunts as mother-types, I love Diane Wiest and Stockard Channing in "Practical Magic". And for a gruelling fascinating mother interpretation, I liked Tilda Swinton in "The Deep End".
