Wow. What an amazingly campy picture. It simply is too bad (and too good) to be forgotten. Am I the only one here who has seen that? Starring Stephen Boyd in the most melodramatic leading role I've ever seen.

Does anyone know where to find it? It's not even on DVD, and the VHS stopped production 10 years ago. Any ideas? I'll settle for an online streaming version of it at this point.

My Oscar Predictions:

PICTURE: Milk or Dark Knight
DIRECTOR: David Fincher, Curious Case of Benjamin Button
ACTOR: Sean Penn, Milk or Frank Langella, Frost/Nixon
ACTRESS: Meryl Streep, Doubt or Kate Winslet, Revolutionary Road
SUPPORTING ACTOR: Heath Ledger, Dark Knight or Michael Shannon, Revolutionary Road
SUPPORTING ACTRESS: Kate Winslet, The Reader, or Penelope Cruz, Vicky Cristina Barcelona
ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY: Milk
ADAPTED SCREENPLAY: Slumdog Millionaire
ANIMATED FEATURE: Wall.E
BEST ORIGINAL SONG: Peter Gabriel, Thomas Newman, "Down to Earth"
BEST ORIGINAL SCORE: Thomas Newman, Wall.E

No one? Wow. Well, do yourself a favor and look it up. Hopefully TCM will show it again in the near future.

TCM has shown it a few times, the last time was on cult film night, so that would probably be your best bet. If you want to own it so bad you can probably rustle up a used VHS tape on Ebay or a similar site.

TCM showed it recently as one of Bill Maher's picks.

Yeah. That's actually where I first discovered it. But without it being available on DVD, I'm going to have to re-purchase a VCR to watch it.

Yes, the movie is definitely in a league of its own, and tends to pop up on many critics' top (bottom) 100 Worst lists.

Poor Stephen Boyd and Eleanor Parker...seven years before "The Oscar," Boyd had been a brilliant Messala in "Ben-Hur," and Parker had alit from "The Sound of Music" a mere year before this train wreck. Sobering testament to the old maxim: "You're only as good as your last role."

It was one of those films that I simply cannot put on my Worst Film list, because it was still such a pleasure to watch it. That the comedy was completely unintentional is only half the fun.

For your viewing pleasure, here is one of the climactic scenes of "The Oscar," in which Tony Bennett displays some of the most over-the-top acting ever presented in the American cinema. Note the ridiculously laughable dialogue. All I can say is.... wow.

Ahhh, Tony Bennett as the half Jewish, half Irish, Hymie Kelley. What a memorable debut that was! I've seen it on Amazon, used & outrageously priced. Boy I wish they'd put this out on DVD. I taped it a long time ago & would watch it with friends before the actual Oscars. Of course that tape is long gone. Loved the ending, Boyd's character was Frank & the winner was Frank Sinatra. When the name Frank was said, Boyd jumped up & when he realized it was the other Frank, Boyd started this weird, spastic clapping that was just hilarious.

TCM has The Oscar scheduled for Tuesday Dec. 30 at 11:45 PM ET. You might want to record it to your DVR and transfer it to DVD.
