Alright, this post will be brief, but I want to hear everyone's opinion: should I find this film funny? I mean, I'm laughing at it quite a bit, particularly during the over-acting on the part of, well, everyone involved. But what was the reception of the film when it came out? Did people look at it as the satire that it seems to be? Or was their a public outcry of offense? Again, I like the film, but I'm not sure what context I should receive it under.
---- OSCAR FYC: Best Picture - "Up" Best Actor - Michael Stuhlbarg, "A Serious Man" Best Actress - Saoirse Ronan, "Lovely Bones" Best Supporting Actor - Christoph Waltz, "Basterds" Best Original Screenplay - "Up"

Doc; you dont need anyone to tell you how to react to this film. I dont recall any "public outcry". Not on any kind of scale.

I don't remember any public outcry at all over it. It was pretty well received by the public and critics. Of course, Joan Cusack received an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress.

My screenwriting teacher made my class watch this film. I've seen it many times and I still think it's pretty funny. My favorite part is when Joan Cusack and Kevin Kline are getting married and Emily yells "F*ck Barbra Streisand! And you!"
I think it's one of those movies that's really funny and makes you laught out loud---but at times makes you just slightly ashamed to be laughing at it because it does present some cliches and stereotypes---but overall the point of the film has good intentions.

I probably should have cleared up earlier, I wasn't ashamed of myself for laughing necessarily; I just wasn't sure if I was the only one. Being aware of Cusack's performance, I got the feeling that maybe it wasn't as opposed as I imagined it was.
And yes, Boidiva, I know what you mean; it was the same way with The Producers on Broadway: only then could you see straight men laughing at pure homosexual cliches and get away with it.
**SLIGHT SPOILER** I didn't see the fact that Tom Selleck's character was gay. That kiss was both awkward and hilarious. The foot-pop Kevin Kline added to it was like a twisted Princess Diaries sort of affair.

I thought the movie was ****, frankly, and I was mildly offended by it - but to each his own. I didn't find the performances that appealing save for Tom, who is REALLY hot in this film.

I wasn't so much ashamed either as much as i thought "should i find this funny? is this offensive?" that's all i really thought.

That year, Supporting Actress had 3 absolutely classic performances. 3 of the best performances of the decade: Julianne Moore, Minnie Driver, and Joan Cusack.
And somehow, Kim Basinger won for "looking great as Veronica Lake"

Truly a weird, f*cked-up year, capped by Cameron crowing "I'm the king of the world!"
