God's other Son
Posted
I just saw WALL-E this past Friday and enjoyed it immensly. The only thing that made the experience better was hearing the song that played during the closing credits, "Down to Earth" which was performed by one of my all time favorite musicians, Peter Gabriel.

I was wondering if anyone had any thoughts about Gabriel's chances to maybe take home an Oscar for Best Original Song? Do you think he stands a shot of getting nominated or even winning?

Can't wait to hear your opinions.

I think that "Down to Earth"'s a great song. The vast majority of the capacity audience that I was at didn't get out of their chairs until the last credit rolled. Maybe they were waiting for a secret scene at the end or something, but that's song's brilliant and transfixing, and I think that had something to do with people staying put instead of bolting at the end too. I'd love to see it make the Best Original Song category, and I think it will. I don't think voters will pass up the chance to see Peter Gabriel and the Soweto Gospel Choir perform on the telecast. It'll be a big "Oscar" moment for them. The only thing I'd be concerned about is the recent trend in shying away from nominating end credits songs post-rules change and going for songs that are incorporated within the film itself instead. But "I Need to Wake Up" was an end credits song and won, and Dolly's song was an end credits song too. So yes, Peter Gabriel's chances at an Oscar nod are high, especially with "WALL-E" being the hit that it is already, and what's about to come for the film.

And the credits themselves are gorgeous, a kind of history of art in three minutes.

Can Peter Gabriel's song be nominated for the Oscar? I thought that songs that played on the end credits were not eligible for the Oscars...

For Your Emmy Consideration:
Kyra Sedgwick - Best Actress in a Drama Series
"Damages" - Best Drama Series
Zeljko Ivanek - Best Supporting Actor in a Drama Series
Glynn Turman - Guest Actor in a Drama Series

I am not an expert Kams, but from what I can glean, Peter Gabriel's song is eligible for Best Original Song, as long as it was written expressly for Wall E, in collaboration with the film makers; as long as it has not been previously 'exploited' prior to the release of the film.
Of course, there is a body of Executives who can ultimaetely do what they want. But as far as I can see, the song is eligible, regardless of where in the film it occurs. There is the requisite paper work necessary, and Peter Gabriel must be on board with any considerations.
I'd be interested in knowing as well, if my interpretation is correct.

Babypook, I asked that because, if I remember correctly, there was a change in the rule for the Original Song category.

It's eligible. The rule is that only the first new end credits song is eligible for Oscar consideration.

Thanks. But, if there are five or more original songs, regardless of where they occur, can they not be submiited as Best Original Music?

Multiple original songs can be submitted from the same film as long as they occur within the film itself or the first end credits song. Only a maximum of two of those songs can then make it to the final list.

If Phil Collins has an Oscar, Peter Gabriel (or anyone else, for that matter) should have one, too.

Peter Gabriel (with Deep Forest) composed and performed "While the Earth Sleeps" as heard in Strange Days (1995), surely one of the best songs ever to play during the closing credits of a film. That song still makes my hair (and elsewhere) stand straight up...

With recent wins for edgier songs like "Falling Slowly," "Lose Yourself," and "Hard Out Here for a Pimp" i'm gonna say "Rock Me Sexy Jesus" from Hamlet 2 will prevail! Also, some High School Musical 3 song will impact this category.

He was nominated for a golden globe for composing for Rabbit Proof Fence

Oh my Lord, I totally forgot about that. I either have to buy the Strange Days soundtrack or rent the DVD to listen to the fantastic music (the movie wasn't too bad either - and Ralph Finnes looked fine as hell).

He was also nominated for a Golden Globe for his score to The Last Temptation of Christ. Both scores lost out on Oscar nominations. I do seem to remember him performing a song at the 1999 Oscar ceremony but he was only the performer and was not the writer of the song. I can't remember what the song was though.

Fiennes did look "fine" (good pun!) as hell in Strange Days. Plus, it was an unusual departure (i.e., two-bit hustler) even for an actor who does not shy from playing damaged characters.

I recommend a number of other Kathryn Bigelow films: Blue Steel; Point Break; Near Dark. Strong, violent stuff.

Oh, yes, Peter Gabriel is a genius.

Seen all Ms. Bigelow's fine work. Need to netflix 'Near Dark' too as I haven't seen it since it was in theaters. Great vampire movie.

I have always liked Peter Gabriel and if Eminem can win an Oscar for 8 Mile, Peter is totally due. [Not dissing Eminem, I'm just sayin...].

I'd say Gabriel has a REALLY stong chance of getting in... In fact, "Wall-E" looks to get the same 4 noms "Ratatouille" got last year, plus the nod for Gabriel's wonderful song.
