Best Picture:
1) "Revolutionary Road"
2) "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button"
3) "Changeling"
4) "Milk"
5) "The Wrestler" (call me crazy but I think it will be the big winner with the critics this year)

Other Possibiilites:
6) "Doubt"- I think the acting will be better than the movie.
7) "Frost/Nixon"- see above.
8) "Australia"- Could be fantastic, could be a bloated epic a la "Cold Mountain".

Best Director:
1) Clint Eastwood- "Changeling"
2) David Fincher- "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button"
3) Sam Mendes- "Revolutionary Road"
4) Gus Van Sant- "Milk"
5) Darren Aronofsky- "The Wrestler"

Other Possibiilites:
6) Christopher Nolan- "The Dark Knight"
7) Steven Soderbergh- "Che"
8) Baz Luhrman- "Australia"

Best Actor:
1) Frank Langella- "Frost/Nixon"
2) Mickey Rourke- "The Wrestler"
3) Leonardo DiCaprio- "Revolutionry Road"
4) Sean Penn- "Milk"
5) Brad Pitt- "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button"

Other Possibilities:
6) Benicio Del Toro- "Che"- I think a lot of voters will not sit through a movie that long. Some of the older voters may not even want to watch or support a movie about a Communist revolutionary.
7) Richard Jenkins- "The Visitor"

Best Actress:
1) Meryl Streep- "Doubt"
2) Angelina Jolie- "Changeling"
3) Kate Winslet- "Revolutionary Road"
4) Anne Hathaway- "Rachel Getting Married"
5) Kristin Scott Thomas- "I've Loved You So Long"

Other Possibilities:
6) Sally Hawkins- "Happy-Go-Lucky"
7) Melissa Leo- "Frozen River"
(I think the critics awards are going to go to indie gals Hawkins, Leo and Thomas but I only think there is space for one amongst the nominees. I'm going with Scott Thomas as a past Oscar nominee and think her being the front-runner for best actress at the Tonys helps her as well.)

Best Supporting Actor:
1) Heath Ledger- "The Dark Knight"
2) Michael Sheen- "Frost/Nixon"
3) Josh Brolin- "Milk"
4) Michael Shannon- "Revolutionary Road"
5) James Franco- "Milk"

Other Possibilities:
6) Robert Downey Jr.- "The Soloist"/"Tropic Thunder"- You can keep trying to push Downey Jr. on me but I think both his films have problems. He's hilarious in "Tropic Thunder" but it's really not the kind of thing Oscars care about. "The Soloist" looks like sappy trash that is likely to be ripped apart by the critics. Jamie Foxx seems really phony in the film and I say if he is not in the running for best actor than Downey Jr. will not be for supporting.

Best Supporting Actress:
1) Penelope Cruz- "Vicky Cristina Barcelona"
2) Amy Adams- "Doubt"
3) Marisa Tomei- "The Wrestler"
4) Viola Davis- "Doubt"
5) Debra Winger- "Rachel Getting Married"

Other Possibilities:
6) Kate Winslet- "The Reader"- I just don't believe voters will consider it supporting.

Adapted Screenplay:
1) "Revolutionary Road"
2) "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button"
3) "Doubt"
4) "Frost/Nixon"
5) "Slumdog Millionaire"

Other Possibilities:
6) "The Reader"

Best Original Screenplay:
1) "Milk"
2) "Changeling"
3) "The Wrestler"
4) "Vicky Cristina Barcelona"
5) "The Visitor"

Other Possibilities:
6) "Happy Go Lucky"
7) "Rachel Getting Married"

Doc, I'm fairly certain that Vicky Cristina Barcelona, is an original screenplay, written by my favorite neurotic.

You're right. Of course, I dont have the courage to make any predictions at this point, save to say that CHOKE deserves some notice here...Sam Rockwell, for starters...and Clark Gregg for adapted.

The reviews were not very good so I think that ship might have sailed.

Well; there's a lot of sex, x-rated vocabulary, and nudity in it. I'll side with the Special and Grand Jury Prize. I'm going to add it to my eventual predix list as well, just to be, contrarian, and support one of my favorites this year.

Actually, PacinoFan's right. I just put the wrong heading on those two prediction categories.

As for Woody Allen, he's pretty much nominated for Original Screenplay more than any other writer that comes to mind. Even though he's not on my predictions, I'll be surprised if he doesn't make it in.

My Oscar Predictions:

PICTURE: Milk or Dark Knight
DIRECTOR: David Fincher, Curious Case of Benjamin Button
ACTOR: Sean Penn, Milk or Frank Langella, Frost/Nixon
ACTRESS: Meryl Streep, Doubt or Kate Winslet, Revolutionary Road
SUPPORTING ACTOR: Heath Ledger, Dark Knight or Michael Shannon, Revolutionary Road
SUPPORTING ACTRESS: Kate Winslet, The Reader, or Penelope Cruz, Vicky Cristina Barcelona
ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY: Milk
ADAPTED SCREENPLAY: Slumdog Millionaire
ANIMATED FEATURE: Wall.E
BEST ORIGINAL SONG: Peter Gabriel, Thomas Newman, "Down to Earth"
BEST ORIGINAL SCORE: Thomas Newman, Wall.E

I thought his screenplay, was just, ok. It isnt one of his classic sp's, imo, so I hesitate to cite it for osp. But, you're very right in that, it's Woody Allen. Having him back even in semi-form is generally fine with me.

October seems close enough to finally make a public list for me. If I do it too soon, I run the risk of getting too attached to a film or person, but if I wait to late then there's not as much glory to be had if I do happen to get it right.

Changeling
The Dark Knight
Gran Torino
Milk
The Wrestler

Best Director
Darren Aronofsky, The Wrestler
Clint Eastwood, Changeling
Clint Eastwood, Gran Torino

Taraji P. Henson, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
Marisa Tomei, The Wrestler
Debra Winger, Rachel Getting Married

Wow. Someone is really pushing Gran Torino. Personally, it sounds like nothing more than a possible Actor nod for Clint to me. Also very surprised to see The Wrestler with both Picture and Director among that. Glad to see Dark Knight with Adapted Screenplay and Director.

Does anyone think that Ledger might not be the only acting nom Dark Knight receives? I'm, of course, thinking of Aaron Eckhart and, my personal favorite in the film, character actor Gary Oldman. With no real frontrunners in that category so far other than Ledger and Downey Jr. in Tropic Thunder, it might just happen. (At least at the Golden Globes)

My Oscar Predictions:

PICTURE: Milk or Dark Knight
DIRECTOR: David Fincher, Curious Case of Benjamin Button

Yes, Gran Torino might only receive a Best Actor nomination, but I'm worried about committing to Australia, Revolutionary Road, Benjamin Button, or Frost/Nixon right now. They really love Clint, so I could see him being showered with nominations again. I want to put Australia or The Curious Case of Benjamin Button in its place because I think those two can really sweep the technical nominations and pick up an acting nomination or two. However, I'm worried that Australia is going to be like Cold Mountain because they have started to go away from awarding epics, and they've never been a fan of David Fincher, so I'm not sure they'll recognize him now.

I think Ledger will be the only acting nomination it receives because usually supporting actor is one of the most competitive categories, imo, and I think Ledger's performance overshadowed Aaron Eckhart's and Gary Oldman's too much for them to have a realistic shot. It's too bad that perhaps they couldn't have written better material for Maggie Gyllenhaal because she might have been able to pick up her first nomination since I think they are just dying to nominate her, but she's not quite broken through yet to getting an actual nomination yet.

Do you think Robert Downey Jr. will be nominated more for his work on IRON MAN, TROPIC THUNDER and THE SOLOIST rather than his acting in one specific role?
