I finally got the chance to see Evita today (and I hated Madonna's performance, BTW), but it got me thinking: Who are some recording artists that have delivered some truly OUTSTANDING performances in film?
I know that Barbra Streisand, Diana Ross, Cher, and Frank Sinatra are on some people's lists. Will Smith, Jennifer Hudson, and Queen Latifah come to mind as well, but these are all Oscar nominated/winning recording artists.
Are there any great performances by recording artists that went unnoticed by the Academy, but you still consider to be great ones? (I'm talking about people who were recording artists FIRST, then tapped into acting; not vice-versa.)
Personally, I think Jill Scott gives a truly stunning performance in Tyler Perry's Why Did I Get Married?. If you haven't seen it, then I strongly recommend it. Janet Jackson wasn't too bad either, but Scott is the true star of the film. Scott has the lead in the film and does an amazing job, IMO.
That's the only one I can think of at the moment. You guys are the big movie buffs, so I'm sure there are others.

Janet Jackson was infinitely better in Poetic Justice. Tupac Shakur was excellent in the film as well. Not Oscar worthy by any means but definitely good performances and a good movie. I didn't think Janet could pull it off.
I loved Ethel Waters in Cabin in the Sky from 1943. She seemed like a real natural actress in that one. It was her 7th movie according to imdb and she wouldn't be in another one until 1949, but that one (Pinky) did earn her a supporting actress nomination.

I agree with you on Jill Scott. I'm sure Tyler Perry movies aren't usually on folks' radars, but she was very good.
Bette Midler was of course great as well in The Rose and For the Boys (Oscar noms), plus great in non-musical comedies Ruthless People, Outrageous Fortune, and Down & Out In Beverly Hills.
I haven't seen Nashville, but wasn't Ronee Blakely a singer before being in that movie and got an Oscar nom.
Dwight Yoakam got good notices in Sling Blade I believe.
That's all I can think of for the time being.

I know you like the beefy types but I prefer men on the prettier side so I actually do not have a crush on Mr. McGraw.
