Apologies if this has been answered somewhere else, or if this should be in the (barren) Critic's section, but does anyone know when the National Board of Review (usually one of the first) award winners come out?
FOR YOUR CONSIDERATION
Best Supporting Actress: Toni Collette (THE BLACK BALLOON)
Best Supporting Actor: Luke Ford (THE BLACK BALLOON)

This group (which should be ignored at all costs and tends to reward those studios who give them the most respect - in other words, they can be influenced - names its winners in Dec and then hands out them at a phony dinner where expensive tables are sold to studios so they can make some money.
One reason they have so many winners and spread the wealth is they want everyone to be on the hook.

Jeez, all you had to do was list when the winners would be announced. I don't think it was necessary to rant about how "phony" the NBR is.

I'm so-so when it comes to the National Board. When they name Bucket List one of the year's best, it's laughable. But when they recognize artists like Tim Burton last year, I start to respect the board more.
Like I said: so-so. Christopher Nolan for Best Director!
And Best Supporting Actor should go to Heath, but with NBR's whole "nominate two people for playing same role different ages," I'm guessing it'll go to the Slumdog boys or Ralph Fiennes and younger self in Reader.
My Oscar Predictions:
PICTURE: Milk or Dark Knight DIRECTOR: David Fincher, Curious Case of Benjamin Button ACTOR: Sean Penn, Milk or Frank Langella, Frost/Nixon ACTRESS: Meryl Streep, Doubt or Kate Winslet, Revolutionary Road SUPPORTING ACTOR: Heath Ledger, Dark Knight or Michael Shannon, Revolutionary Road SUPPORTING ACTRESS: Kate Winslet, The Reader, or Penelope Cruz, Vicky Cristina Barcelona ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY: Milk ADAPTED SCREENPLAY: Slumdog Millionaire ANIMATED FEATURE: Wall.E BEST ORIGINAL SONG: Peter Gabriel, Thomas Newman, "Down to Earth" BEST ORIGINAL SCORE: Thomas Newman, Wall.E

Not surprised by Dark Knight exclusion. Really thought he'd predict Rourke for actor, though.

I'm not surprised either. The NBR are very into prestige pictures with a literary bent and popcorn pictures have a hard time making their list even if the reviews are very good. Best picture winner "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King" didn't even make their top ten list. I considered removing "The Dark Knight" from my list but am keeping it. Dave Karger has "The Visitor" in his top ten but I placed it in the Independent Film Top Ten so I still had a space for "The Dark Knight".

The site's been corrected now, and "Mongol" won Best Foreign Language film instead of "Roman de Gare."

Originally posted by seanflynn: They do all their lists that way.
It is beyond silly, but allows them to add more titles and sell more tables to their dinner.
That's news to me. I thought their best picture was always #1 on their list. If they've always had eleven films on their list I was not aware of it until this year.

They've been doing this for a year or two. As I said, just part of their racket to get as many different studios as possible on the hook for buying tables.

I do agree it is a racket but based on that why did they ignore heavy-hitters this year like "Revolutionary Road", "Doubt", "The Reader", etc? I always thought they were in the prestige business but their list this year does not look like that.
