Unusually and exceedingly peculiar and altogether quite impossible to describe.

Streep, Hoffman, Doubt
AD reader Charlie passed on this tidbit about Doubt, which has been test screened recently and commented upon on a message board:
quote:
Lets just get this out of the way now..Meryl is stunning. You literally can’t take your eyes off of her. She doesn’t have an Irish accent instead she has a Bronx accent. And of course its spot on. Philip Seymour Hoffman was fine. But Meryl acts circles around him. Amy Adams was fantastic. The story remains intact, and all in all it was fabulous(although the A/C was busted so it was hot as hell, but the movie was so good I hardly noticed) I can’t wait to see the final cut.
Going for third Oscar? Doubt, written and directed by John Patrick Shanley, seems to have Oscar written all over it. IMDb sums it up as a film “set at a Catholic school in the Bronx, it centers on a nun who grows suspicious when a priest begins taking too much interest in the life of a young black student. Is she being overly protective or not protective enough? And can she work within the system to discover the truth?”
Way back in Feb of ‘07, Nathaniel at the Film Experience wrote:

Which means La Streep is winning her third Oscar (finally) in February 2009. Don’t believe me? Then you haven’t seen Doubt. Remember how I said before Effie White was cast for Dreamgirls that whoever got the role would be up for the Oscar? Same thing here. Sister Aloysius is one of those parts. In the right hands it’s a sensational character. And we all know that Streep knows how to handle a strong character.

The other one says, "Yeah, I know; and such small portions." Well, that's essentially how I feel about life - full of loneliness, and misery, and suffering, and unhappiness, and it's all over much too quickly. The... the other important joke, for me, is one that's usually attributed to Groucho Marx; but, I think it appears originally in Freud's "Wit and Its Relation to the Unconscious," and it goes like this - I'm paraphrasing - um, "I would never want to belong to any club that would have someone like me for a member." That's the key joke of my adult life, in terms of my relationships with women. " - Alvy Singer

Good point.
I find it weird, though, that Viola Davis was not mentioned at all in this review. Maybe the producers will support Amy Adams instead?

At this part of the game, it's just all for the name of publicity and early buzz.
Remember Romola Garai last year?

No, sorry. I wasn't following the race this early last year. What happened?

DOUBT is a great play and this production has a great cast (I'm so tickled at the whole idea that I am graciously willing to reserve judgment on Amy Adams—ha ha). We must acknowledge Cherry Jones' instrumental and groundbreaking role in making this play famous, but we all know Meryl Streep is bigger box office. I am sure she will be up to the no-easy-task of filling Ms Cherry's habit (ha ha). And yes, when one is as good an actor as Ms Streep is, there will always be buzz...

Nothing actually. LOL! Everytime someone would make a prediction lists this time last year, the sure bet for Supporting Actress is Romola Garai for Atonement.
Come real Oscar time, there was not even a single mention for her.
So it does not affect whether someone was unmentioned with hearsay news like this. The buzz is still too early to affect the race. As a matter of fact, there isn't still a race yet.

OK but really, so what? This production DOES NOT NEED HYPE! After all, it stars Meryl Streep(!) and Philip Seymour Hoffman(!). That's more than enough to put it over.
But if you insist, I will help string them naughty young bucks what did this up for a good hard paddlin'—when we get through, they'll be sore for a week!
Ha ha—Happy Friday!

I was going to say, no matter what, Doubt is going to be a huge player at the oscars this year - but now that this story is ligit (tom confirmed it), this is really awesome - and especially for amy adams! I really want her to get that oscar this year!

The plot thickens. Miramax rep Andrew Bernstein just emailed me to say, ooops, there WAS a test screening, but it was done by Scott Rudin. MMX knew nuthin' 'bout it. Well, curiously, either did one of Rudin's film reps at 42 West -- I checked in with him separately today. Jeeeeeeeeeeeez. Sorry for the mixup! HERE is our correction at Gold Derby:
I was going to say, no matter what, Doubt is going to be a huge player at the oscars this year
An absurdly premature thing to say. How many times have things like that been said about other films in April, only to have December come and they are afterthoughts?
Doubt definitely could be a serious contender - but it is hardly a certainty.

As much as I would love this to happen, I find it highly unlikely. Especially if Kate Winslet gets a double nomination.

Meryl Streep, Phillip Seymour Hoffman, Amy Adams - that says it all! A powerhouse cast and an intriguing story - it has oscar written all over it!

And you're right, Kate Winslet may FINALLY win - but Amy Adams also may win. Who knows, maybe Kate Winslet will win for Revolutionary Road, or she may win for The Reader, just, who knows right now? I am a fan of the talented Amy Adams and I hope that she can get oscar nomination number 2 and hopefully she can take home the gold as well!

Wasn't The Reader's release pushed to 2009? I could swear I read it somewhere...
I'm Amy Adams' fan too and I really want her to get another nomination (I still think she should have been nominated for Enchanted) and a win, she's been doing some solid work lately and, in my opinion, is really talented. But if Winslet really gets nominations for The Reader and Revolutionary Road, 2009 will possibly be the year the Academy will give Meryl her 3rd Oscar and Kate her first.

isn't that overstating??? amy adams is far, far away from being a powerhouse actress lol.. she did 'junebug' and 'enchanted', big deal. she wasn't that great in neither of them. just chill and wait for the movie to come out

About the reader being pushed back to 2009, i read that it was just a rumor for right now - and you may be right about if the reader is for a 2008 release, then meryl could get her 3rd and kate her first - but all i can think right now is won't it be a injustice to kate winslet for being nominated in mostly lead actress catagories and then she finally wins, and its in the suppporting actress catagory... i mean, at least she will have the oscar, but doesn't she deserve the lead actress oscar by now?!?
