I was watching the latest x-files movie and remembered Gilian Anderson's fantastic work on 2000's "The house of mirth"; she was in the shortlist of the nominees and deserved the recognition if not the award itself..
Mary Tyler Moore came close in 1980; I can think of Matthew Fox of Lost doing good job in heavy dramas..

Jennifer Aniston gave a very nice, nuanced and subtly creative performance in "Friends with Money".

Sandra Oh has given a lot of great film performances in Canadian films like "The Last Night" and "Long Life, Happiness and Prosperity".

Jane Horrocks in "Little Voice".

ZaSu Pitts in "Greed", but that was long before she moved to TV.

Edie Falco in 'Sunshine State'; I love Moore, Bates and Latifah, but she was sooooo much better than them. Proof that those three household names were enough to get the nom

would Candace Bergin in "Starting Over" count or does it not count because it was before she became known as a TV performer.

Lisa Kudrow has done Oscar-Worthy work in two movies "The Opposite Of Sex" and "Happy Endings".

Praying The Daytime Emmys air on TV in 2010!

Some people, if they don't know, you can't tell 'em.

These days, the only difference between the caliber of performance is the size of screen you watch it on. A good amount of TV is as good or better than the mass of movies.

Some Oscar-worthy performances from largely TV actors:

Amber Tamblyn in "Stephanie Daley"

Ellen Pompeo in "Moonlight Mile"

Rosemarie DeWitt, "Rachel Getting Married"

Jennifer Aniston, "The Good Girl"

Actors who currently give or have given Oscar-caliber performances on TV:

Mary-Louise Parker, Frances Conroy, Rachel Griffiths, Edie Falco, Bryan Cranston, Gabriel Byrne, Katee Sackhoff, Mia Wasikowska, Terry O'Quinn, Elizabeth Mitchell, Hugh Laurie, Kyra Sedgwick, Gillian Anderson, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Kristen Bell, Susanna Thompson

"A movie is not good because it arrives at conclusions you share, or bad because it does not. A movie is not about what it is about. It is about how it is about it: about the way it considers its subject matter, and about how its real subject may be quite different from the one it seems to provide."
- Roger Ebert, from the introduction to "Awake in the Dark" (2006)

Is the purpose of this thread to cite current television actors who are so good they should try their hand at movies so they can nab an Oscar nomination or is the purpose to list former television actors who have done good work in movies (past or recent present), even though they no longer act on television?

FYC:
"Up" for Best Picture and Kathryn Bigelow for Best Director

I'll go with current ones who I think can do work good enough(or have done work good enough on TV) to get nods:

January Jones - assuming she has some range and can play character other than betty
Michael Impreoli
Ian McShane
France Conroy(maybe)
Allison Janney
Martin Sheen
Edie Falco

With Past Oscar Noms but most well know for their television roles(i think), But still doing work good enough to warrant another nom:
Candice Bergen
Stockard Channing
Judy Davis

Judy Davis is the queen of the Australian theatre and cinema with two Oscar noms to her name so I think it would be hard to say she is generally a TV performer even if her most recent high profile work was on "The Starter Wife".

IA with January Jones. I'll add Calista Flockhart, Martin Sheen, and Maura West (ATWT actress, who has such tremendous range, she can blow you away with her performances.)

I think her most high-profile screen work of recent years has been:
A Cooler Climate
Life With Judy Garland: Me and My Shadow(which I think is her most well known work recently, and for some in general)
The Reagans
The Starter Wife
Diamonds(mini-series coming out in May on ABC)

All of these were TV productions, so that's why I included her. I guess I should have put "recently, most well known for their television roles".

Sandra Oh wasn't very memorable in Sideways, but she's done excellent work in other films.

I second the Amber Tamblyn notices for "Stephanie Daley". She was definitely Oscar-worthy, and is my supporting actress winner for '07.

Marianne Jean-Baptiste was excellent in "Secrets & Lies", as was Claire Skinner in "Naked". Both of them are British TV staples.

Mare Winningham in "Georgia"

Rachel Griffiths in some of her earlier films, namely "Muriel's Wedding" and "Hilary and Jackie"

Judah Friedlander was pretty good in "American Splendor"

Hal Holbrook in "Into the Wild"

Amy Ryan in "Gone Baby Gone", although most of her work is on the stage she has starred in some high-profile shows

They got Oscar noms before they were on tv. I don't quite think that counts. That's like putting Sally Field or Glenn Close on that list. Plus, I don't think either has given Oscar-worthy performances in movies since they've been on tv.

She deserved a spot for "The Good Girl". I would have done away with either Kidman's or Zellweger's spot and gave it to her. She was also very good in "Friends With Money".
